Where to go after art school. Art professions where drawing skill is useful

How do graduates of art universities live?

Publication date 31.10.2013

Member of the Union of Artists Vladimir MIKHAILOV, except that the artist is a master artistic word. For example, you ask him about how he worked part-time as a student at the Academy of Arts, and Vladimir answers something like this:

- single year permanent income It was 2004, when in my second year my friend and I rented a workshop on Repin Street. We lived there, worked there, and met friends. Then one of my comrades recruited several people who wanted to learn to draw from me. As already with a sort of professional, albeit a beginner. And so the students came to me - they liked it very much. I only taught them to draw with a pencil. During the year they went twice a week. Each paid 50 rubles per lesson. When five people came, I accordingly received 250 rubles. All these were adults who studied just for themselves. Lenya, for example, was older than me. One student was even from Taiwan. She commissioned a portrait for me. Which I never wrote to her...

If Vladimir is not stopped, then he will continue to make a sketch on a given topic, supplementing it with new touches - branches, digressions, clarifications. Ask new question You can only interrupt the artist. But then the same story will repeat itself. Because Vladimir is a person, not to mention the fact that he is very erudite and eloquent, very addicted. Actually, he became an artist because he once became interested in drawing. Here is how it was…

Suddenly, the eleventh grade came. And with him the question: what to do after school? In addition to good academic performance, Volodya has various hobbies in his luggage: history, theater, sports, drawing, literature ... The choice of a further path, as usually happens in such a situation, was decided by chance. The family remembered that there is such an institute named after Herzen (in which my mother once studied). And it has an art-graphic faculty. And why not go there?

Thoughts about being an artist, Volodya, as he claims, was not in sight. But since he was then carried away by the idea of becoming an artist-teacher, he prepared himself for several months of serious studies with teachers. And he did. Well, I studied. As usual, with enthusiasm.

But in the fourth year, it suddenly deafened: “What will I do after graduation?! I don't want to be an art teacher! And the university is pedagogical. A great variety of artistic and arts and crafts subjects were taught there. At a level that is more than sufficient for a school teacher. And yet falls short of the level of the artist.

“Everything was fine with me,” Vladimir recalls. - I even went to the red diploma. But suddenly there was a crisis. What did I spend four years on?! What will I do next?.. I could not become an artist yet. Yes, and still did not want ... I fell into a real depression. Friends, seeing my condition, dragged me to preparatory courses at the Academy of Arts. Repin. And in three months of hard work they brought me back to life.

Vladimir left the institute. Herzen and entered the department of restoration at the Academy of Arts. True, the points were only enough for a paid place. Money troubles began.

- Education cost then 17 thousand rubles a year - a lot of money for our family, - Vladimir recalls. – And then a family friend said: “I will help, I will buy your work!” And he bought my copy of the painting "The Thrush Family". In fact, it was, of course, patronage. I also went to work as a salesman for music discs and cassettes. He took another job to the sellers on Nevsky. And thanks to all this together, we managed to pay for the education. But it was not possible to study further for a fee ...

Therefore, a year later, Vladimir again passed the entrance exams. Passed successfully. And again began to study in the first year - now for free. And after the second year, that is, after seven years of study at higher art educational institutions, Mikhailov felt the need to move to the department easel painting i.e. become an artist. And only four years later (the course of higher education at the Academy of Arts is not 5, but 6 years) he finally became one - having brilliantly defended his diploma.

How do graduates of higher art educational institutions?

According to my interlocutor, they can be divided into several conditional categories.

Category one. These are people who burn out professionally or cannot compete. They go into related professions, such as design. In very rare cases, they change the scope of activity altogether.

The second category is graduates who remain to teach: either at their own university or at another. They teach for ridiculous money - it can be only a few thousand rubles. But at the same time they get into a structure where they have connections, status, the opportunity to exhibit their works and, accordingly, sell them.

… It is difficult to talk about the earnings of artists, but it is possible

- My first serious earnings occurred under the following circumstances, - Vladimir recalls. – As a student at the Academy, I painted a copy of one of Rubens' paintings in the Hermitage. A Belgian tourist came up to me and offered money. I say, "This is an educational copy, it is not for sale." But the Belgian was persistent. As a result, already at home, from my educational copy, I also wrote a copy for the customer. And he bought it from me for 1500 euros. And now my most expensive work, which I wrote in a month, was bought for 187 thousand rubles.

Art higher education institutions in Moscow have always been on a special account. Political changes and economic upheavals in the country do not make the competition less: the love of art wins over any thoughts about daily bread and financial gain. And this is despite the fact that only a few graduates manage to become professionally successful, gain success, and with it prosperity. However, the fact remains that there are usually half as many vacancies in such universities as those who want to take them.

talents and fans

As in the case of theater universities, when entering an art school, an applicant will be searched for the presence of a certain spark, which is commonly called talent. Indeed, after all, everyone can be able to hold a pencil or brush in their hands, but only one person out of a hundred or a thousand is able to create something unique.

Give absolutely precise definition the concept of "talent" is not possible: in art, everything is too subjective. Unfortunately, any creative profession entirely dependent on the opinions of viewers and critics. That is why many experts advise: before crossing the threshold of an art university, you should think about whether you can spend long years his life in obscurity, bitterly regretting that your work did not make the proper impression on the public. After all, the whole play of colors, the clarity of lines, the consistency of style in a work of art are created with only one sole purpose- shock the world and express yourself.

Professional prospects for future artists, designers, architects are rather illusory. The cost of their work can vary greatly - everything will depend on the capricious and fickle fairy luck. Efficiency, ability to find mutual language with the customer today no less important professional qualities.

Preparation for admission to an art university

The list of art universities in the capital is not very long, but getting an education within their walls is considered prestigious all over the world. The high level of teaching in them was set by the founding fathers of these educational institutions. These include the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov, the Moscow Art and Industry University named after V.I. S. G. Stroganova, Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography. S. A. Gerasimova and the art and graphic faculty of the Moscow Pedagogical state university. Without fail, it is necessary to mention the St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. I. E. Repina - this university, which has age-old traditions, was founded in mid-eighteenth century under the patronage of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. According to the Charter then in force, they studied there for 15 years. Today, the official term for obtaining education has been reduced, however, in order to become a student, an applicant in literally You will have to spend years preparing for admission.

Each of these universities has its own art school or preparatory courses. Education and training in them takes from several months to two years. It is worth, however, to make a reservation that officially no one gives their graduate guarantees for admission. Moreover, at the preparatory courses at the Surikov Institute, teachers bluntly warn that no concessions will be expected at the exams for "their own" - everyone enters on a common basis. Preparatory classes, as a rule, paid, not to mention the fact that the applicant has to provide himself with auxiliary materials - paints, brushes, pencils, papers, stretchers, canvases ... The price can be different: for a tube of paint, for example, - from 10 to 1000 rub. A subframe costs at least 2000 rubles.

In addition, upon admission to art university it is very important to take into account one subtlety: when parsing applications, the greatest preference is given to those applicants who either graduated from specialized art schools (for example, Children's Art School No. 1 named after V. A. Serov on Prechistenka, Moscow Academic Art Lyceum Russian Academy arts), or have a secondary vocational education in art schools (Moscow State Academic art school memory of 1905 or the Moscow Art School (college) applied arts). This is done because such higher education does not tolerate random people who suddenly have a burning desire to be artists, restorers or architects. The competition between applicants is quite tough, and the best of the best should be accepted, so it is necessary to make plans for admission in advance, taking into account your own capabilities.

Specialty exams

First, you should decide in which direction you would like to apply your creative impulses. The profession of an artist has several varieties, for example, a painter, restorer, theater artist. The specialties that can be obtained at an art school include such as sculptor, architect, art critic, painting teacher, feature film artist, costume film designer, animation film designer and computer graphics. And the first thing you will be asked upon admission is to provide a preview creative work according to the chosen paths. As a rule, these are drawings: a portrait and a figure of a person, painting - a portrait with hands, compositions. Those who pass this selection are admitted to the entrance examinations. Examinations in the specialty are held in workshops (with the participation of sitters) for several days. Special items include:

  • drawing (two tasks): portrait and standing nude figure (on paper graphite pencil); paper is issued directly on the spot or the applicant uses his own, marked with a seal admission committee;
  • painting: one portrait with the hands of a seated sitter (on canvas oil paints or tempera, gouache, watercolor - upon admission to the graphic faculty); canvas size up to 70 cm big side the applicant must bring with him;
  • composition: work on a given topic can be in any technique.

Then they browse examination papers and give ratings. If the number of points scored is enough to pass through the competition, then an essay on a given topic, history (oral), history of Russian artistic culture and in some cases - foreign language. If, nevertheless, it was not possible to enter the full-time department, paid departments are at your service, the average cost of studying in which sometimes reaches $ 4,500-5,000.

Ministry of Education and Science Russian Federation approved the rating of higher educational institutions based on the results of their activities. The collection of data to determine the ranking of universities and specialties has been carried out since the middle of the 2004 academic year.

When determining the rating, many parameters were taken into account: the quality of the teaching staff, the number of students of various forms of education, the presence of students from other countries; volume scientific research, publishing activity, providing students with hostels, dispensaries, etc.

Discussion

"..love of art conquers any thoughts about daily bread and financial gain."
This phrase is annoying.
For a man loving art, no financial difficulties are important.
Remember Van Gogh.
He only sold one painting in his entire life.

The feeling that the author is trying with all his might to discourage the desire to enter an art university - oh, how bad everything is, hard, unpromising, almost the way to the bottom of life! It is because of such advisers that talented guys become managers and economists, and then they drag the strap all their lives, cursing fate.

There are no advantages for them when applying, that is, at least an exception in time. If now there is an opportunity to study, you can have a drink at the beginning of September or at the end of August. Please, if you can answer?

Features of career growth

The profession of an artist is not a careerist one, career develops depending on the creative potential of the specialist. In the future, the artist may take the position of director creative team, director of an art agency.

The artist paints not what he sees, but what he feels.

Pablo Picasso

There is an opinion that an artist is a brush of the Creator. That is, the talent of the painter is a gift from God, which guides the hand of the artist, painting picture. Perhaps that is the way it is! But one talent is not enough: it must be developed, directed, improved. For this, there are art universities, in which centuries-old knowledge is concentrated on the clarity of lines, the play of colors, and the consistency of style.

Despite the fact that in this profession, as in any other creative profession, few people succeed in becoming professional and successful, competitions for art universities are traditionally high.

When entering an art educational institution, as well as a theater school, you must first prove the presence of a talent that can later prove itself and surprise the world beautiful pictures. In the 17th century, the artist studied for 15 years. Today, education at the university takes place for 5 years, but preparation for admission takes several years. Talented aspiring artists, as a rule, attend art mugs, children's art schools, graduate from specialized lyceums and schools. At art universities, there are art schools or preparatory courses where you can study from 6 months to 2 years.

From the very beginning, you need to decide in which direction you will build your career. Art institutes have several faculties:

  • painting;
  • charts;
  • restoration and technology of painting;
  • sculptures;
  • architecture;
  • animations and multimedia;
  • theory and history of art;
  • design;
  • monumental-decorative and applied art.

When entering an art institute, an applicant must submit his creative work: drawing and painting. Those who pass this preliminary stage are admitted to the entrance creative examinations, which take place in the workshops of the university. At the second stage, tasks are performed for several days on:

  • graphite pencil drawing (portrait and figure);
  • painting (portrait with hands, made with oil paints or watercolors);
  • compositions in any technique to choose from.

And only after these creative competitions the applicant accepts the results of the exam.

In addition to talent and education, an artist also needs such prosaic qualities as efficiency, sociability and the ability to find a common language with customers, owners of galleries and museums.

Creation can outlive the creator:
The Creator will leave, defeated by nature,
However, the image he captured
Will warm hearts for centuries.
I live in thousands of souls in the hearts
All those who love, and, therefore, I am not dust,
And mortal corruption will not touch me.
