Russian rock in female performance. Russian rock bands with female vocals

The editors of the site congratulate the beautiful half of humanity on the holiday! We want girls to be bold like Liz Fair, adventurous like PJ Harvey, sexy like Maya Ivarsson, versatile like Shirley Manson, unpredictable, like Courtney Love and just light up the way women do, which we will talk about in a special article dedicated to March 8. The most powerful women in Rock today.

Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, who is in her 50s, is practically godmother American alternative scene. With her ex-husband and former member band Thurston Moore, Gordon has created some of the most distinctive musical creations of the past 30 years! Her songs have touched on everything from workplace sexism (“Swimsuit Issue”), strange relationships (“Shoot”) to a dedication to Karen Carpenter ( American singer and drummer, died of anorexia).

Liz Fair

Before Liz Phair hit the scene in the early 90s, indie rock was an all-male prerogative. But after her debut (Exile in Guyville), a candid and surprising collection of sexually charged songs, Fair became the unofficial spokesperson for all female singer-songwriters who wanted to be honest about relationships and insecurities.

Maya Ivarsson (The Sounds)

pop rock vocalist Swedish group The Sounds, Maya gets a lot of attention because of her model looks. However, she does not smile at playing the role of a "shy pretty girl" in the group. In addition, being bisexual, she is one of the few figures in modern rock, which touches on issues of homosexuality in an interview.
Must-listen: Living in America.

Shirley Manson (Garbage)

Shirley Manson came to public attention as the vocalist of Garbage. In the second half of the nineties, the group released hits in batches. After the release of their fourth album Bleed Like Me in 2005, the band decided to take a break, which gave Shirley the opportunity to try her hand at acting. Garbage recently reunited and released a dynamite album titled Not Your Kind of People last year.

Karen Oh (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

Karen Oh has expertly led her band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs since the early 2000s, becoming the face of a New York-based trio of dramatic indie punk songs. Just as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs moved from rock to New Age, the singer's vocals changed and became more "furious".

The Donnas

Inspired by tough and fast game The Ramones, Donnas play energetic hard rock. Deliberately referring to the stadium rock spirit of the 70s and 80s. This quartet loves to play pranks, while always looking charming. But if the music they revere often had sexist overtones, here the ladies have the last laugh.

Sherin Foo (The Raveonettes)

Sherine Fu is the female half of The Raveonettes. Hailing from Denmark, the Raveonettes still haven't achieved cult status in America, but Fu and her partner Rose Wagner come up with great surf-pop and garage-rock tracks. The band members sing in a duet, resulting in beautiful melodies that perfectly combine male and female energy.

Lizzy Hale (Halestorm)

Lzzy Hale is the front girl of the hard rock band Halestorm, which also includes her brother Arejay. They released their self-titled first album in 2009, and while their debut didn't contain very original work, it can be seen that Hale wanted to offer a counterpoint to the dirty songs of the male contemporaries.

Courtney Love (Hole)

Being married to Kurt Cobain in the early nineties, Courtney risked being left in the shadow of his fame. But she and her band Hole became a real force in the rock world with the release of Live Through This in 1994. Things haven't gone so smoothly for Kourtney since then, but she certainly remains an icon. female rock.

Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders)

More than 30 years after first appearing on the scene, The Pretenders no longer have the commercial success they once had. But vocalist Chrissie Hynde still has one of rock's most recognizable voices. Her rough, raw, sexy vocals still make listeners and critics say “Wow!” By the way, their 2008 record, Break Up the Concrete, was rated by critics as one of the strongest for last years.

Meg White (The White Stripes)

What's cool about any new PJ Harvey album is that you never know which "Harvey" you're going to hear. Will it be the lo-fi primitivism of Rid of Me? Elegant gothic melodrama To Bring You My Love? A stern ballad on White Chalk piano? Great love songs Stories From the City and Stories From the Sea? In fact, she has proven herself to be an “adventurous chameleon” and one of a kind performer who is absolutely fearless in putting her soul into her songs.

Hayley Williams (Paramore)

Before Hayley Williams was old enough to buy booze, her band Paramore had already released three pop-punk albums. As the vocalist of one of the most promising rock bands, she gets the most attention from the press, while the girl claims that their quintet is a single entity, and not just a pretty girl and a bunch of guys.

Until the 80s, there were no women in Russian rock. That is, the fans famous musicians appeared almost immediately, but until the take-off of the Aquarium, Alla Borisovna Pugacheva was the most rock and roll woman in the country. Without a hint of irony or sarcasm - she was well versed in contemporary music, she was close friends with the Time Machine, and later with Nautilus and Alice. But for real bright women shone in the sky after the appearance of Nastya Poleva. It cannot be said that this “broke the dam”, but a window opened through which the wind of change blew. Women began to appear more often, and each time leave a very noticeable mark in national music. If Nastya was something like a “founding mother”, then her successors became real “shakers of foundations” and “trendsetters of genres”, sometimes even more important than men. When in 1999 one Ufa singer released the main album of the year, it was with him that a new musical era which is still largely ongoing. And women are full participants in this process.

Nastya Poleva

Where did you play: Track, Nastya

Genres: Russian rock

What's cool: Nastya Poleva - the first for real famous woman in Russian rock. Our first female rock star. It is doubly symbolic that this could only appear in Sverdlovsk, far from the centers of civilization, where rock life flowed according to its own laws. By the will of fate, Nastya is also one of the founders of Sverdlovsk rock as such: in 1980 she became a vocalist track - gloomy moralizers related Kraftwerk and Black Sabbath , in 1985 actively collaborated with the growing strength of the young Nautilus , and in 1987 she finally went to solo career. Her debut album Tatsubecame the first famous female rock album in the country. This was facilitated by the new, soft and lyrical manner of Nastya's singing, and unusual, full of references to exotic countries, fashionable arrangements, and surrealistic texts. Nastya's career after this album (and the tragedy with another album,Bride, stolen from the studio) can hardly be called a triumph, but even after moving to St. Petersburg, she retained both her unquestioned musical authority and the status of a living legend of Russian rock.

Quote: I was one hundred percent sure thatTatsuwill pass. I have always had the desire to move mountains and do something to make everyone gasp. And when such motivation appears, I become a meteor. I would endure everything to get the final result.

Diana Arbenina

Where did you play: Night snipers

Genres: russian rock, art song

What's cool: For almost 23 years of his life on big stage spent Diana Arbenina . Behind - hundreds of cities, two hundred songs, collections of poems and prose, an autobiographical performanceMotofozoon the stage of the Moscow Art Theatre. Chekhov, soundtracks for 16 films, the experience of a team mentor in the projectVoice of Ukraine(and in 2015 on the Main Stage project) and a nomination for the Russian independent award for achievements in the field of literature and artTriumph. In addition to all this, Diana successfully combines active concert activity with the position of mother of two beautiful kids Artem and Marta.

Quote: Being a sniper means having a naked, let nervous heart to be receptive to human kindness. And as for love - do not defend yourself from it and wait, even if it takes a whole life.

Zemfira

Where did you play : Zemfira, The Uchpochmack

Genres: Russian rock

What's cool: At least in that she Zemfira . I don't think it makes sense to describe the influence she had on all of Russian music. Zemfira has become one of the most commercially successful singers on our stage, while not being a particularly public person, but simply doing his own thing. In November 2010, Afisha magazine included her first album in the top 50 best Russian albums of all time. And more than once Zemfira was included in the rating of the most powerful women countries. But she, however, always did not care for such titles and regalia. Two concerts are approaching, completing the tour " Small man" in Olympic , for which most of tickets were sold out in a day and the excitement for the event "collapsed" the site kassir.ru and the site itself. Is this not the best proof of popular recognition.

Quote: It's very difficult for me to please. I am dissatisfied with the musicians, dissatisfied with myself, very often, dissatisfied with the public. Sometimes it seems to me that they could be more active. They cannot hurt me, criticize me more than I criticize myself. I know who I am, I am where I belong. I know it, I'm sure of it. And this is my greatest truth and strength. Confidence in who I am and what I am. And I will sing for a very long time.

Svetlana Surganova

Where did you play: Something Else, Night Snipers, Surganova and Orchestra

Genres: rock, alternative rock, jazz rock, trip hop, art rock

What's cool: In fact, according to her first education, Svetlana Yakovlevna Surganova is a pediatrician (Svetlana never worked in her field), which does not prevent her from being talented musician. The artist herself calls the group's style VIP-Punk-Decadence (behind the complex abbreviation lies aesthetics, "hooliganism", energetic presentation, self-irony, texts based on classical poetry), but even this definition is not enough for their work. In addition to the above genres, we can safely say that Svetlana skillfully plays with Latin, ethnic motifs, in some places - electronic samples, and at the same time she is one of the women without whom Russian rock is now unthinkable. Such an off-format group called Surganova and the Orchestra has existed for almost 14 years, is dearly loved by fans, deservedly has one of the most generous fan clubs for surprises and gifts and actively travels with concerts in Russia and abroad, and rightfully bears the title, perhaps the most touring rock band in our country (one has only to look at the schedule of C&O performances).
The group celebrated its tenth anniversary (in 2013) on a large scale with a concert not anywhere, but in the Kremlin Palace, and the releases of new albums are accompanied by concerts in Crocus.

The deep lyrics of the St. Petersburg poetess can be parsed into quotes for a very long time, but we will give one of them below.
Quote: In my work, like many others, I try to solve for myself the fundamental questions of being. I talk, I sing, I shout about it. It turns out a burning mixture of depression and catharsis.

Linda

Where did you play: Convoy, Bloody Faeries, Linda

Genres : trip hop, trip rock, new age, experimental music, ethno rock, folk rock, psychedelic rock, indie rock, art rock, alternative rock, grunge, post-punk, gothic rock

What's cool: Became one of the most mysterious singers our rock scene. Svetlana Geiman was born in the small town of Kentau in Kazakhstan, then moved to Tolyatti with her family, and at the age of 15 ended up in Moscow. Three years later, her creative let begins (Linda took her first steps in the team folk art), and after that she entered the Gnesinka. She has worked with many well-known figures Russian music industry those years, for example, with Vladimir Matetsky, Yuri Aizenshpis, Maxim Fadeev. Unusual musical style quickly helped the singer to become noticed, the albums became platinum (they were sold in the amount of more than 250 thousand copies), the Raven album becomes platinum with a sales status of 1,250,000 copies, becoming the third in Russia. Multiple changes in images from album to album, constant experiments with sound and appearance, and finally - a successful collaboration with the Universal Music label, which brought her big concerts and performances at festivals, and even performed as an opening act for Moby in 2005. Part musical career Linda is connected with Greece - this is where Stefanos Korkolis comes from, Greek singer and a composer, with whom Linda later tied the knot, but divorced a couple of years later. The singer continues to create, release new albums (her eighth studio album 2013 LAY, @! was even recognized best album year according to MusicBox), and continues to create to this day. Well, who knows how long musical experiments Enough of her talent.

Quote: The image is born at the moment when childbirth occurs, “childbirth-water”, therefore the parents lay the image. Then in life you can search, try on yourself and feel with all your internal state what is closer to you, where you are more comfortable and where there are those things with which you can grow further. AT kindergarten I wanted to become an astronaut, then I really liked to fish, I always thought that I would be a dolphin rescuer. Life has always been unpredictable. Then I became very fond of the circus. Plus I was born in an ethnic place. I received my first musical burns at the age of four, when I heard ethnic instruments of simple street musicians. Another grandmother, who raised me, who gave me a lot in life, was very creative person and she had difficult fate. All this was layered over the years and acquired a certain foundation that guided me. These are all components, and this is a very global issue.

Lusine Gevrkyan

Where did you play: Sphere of Influence, Traktor Bowling, Louna

Genres: alternative metal, alternative rock, nu metal, punk rock

What's cool: Lu is considered one of the best alternative vocalists in our country, which has been repeatedly confirmed by both fans and awards such as the Chart Dozen. Recently, Lusine successfully combines work in two projects (Tracktor Bowling and Louna) with the role of a wife (Lu is married to Vitaly Demidenko, bass player of Traktors and Louna) and a caring mother, while actively performing with her colleagues at many festivals , where they are always welcome guests, work on electrical and acoustic material, charity and filming. Previously, however, Lou still taught vocals, but with such a busy schedule, this had to be abandoned. By education - an economist. For his bands, he writes part of the material on his own - both the lyrics and the musical component of the songs. She is an endorser of Sennheiser microphones and ear monitoring systems, as well as a representative of Roland brand synthesizers in Russia (she is a pianist herself).

Quote: Guys, rock music… it is truthful, it is honest, it is sometimes aggressive, it is often heavy, sometimes even heavy, energetic, but it is always against war, against weapons, against violence, against injustice, and sings of love, honesty, kindness, equality and brotherhood.

Julia Kogan

Where did you play : Leningrad, solo project

Genres: pop, pop rock, jazz

What's cool: The red-haired beast Yulia Kogan quickly burst into the musical party in 2007 and became famous in one day. Still - the team of Sergei Shnurov never left anyone indifferent, and with the advent of Yulia, the "second wind" of the group's popularity was completely opened. A beautiful figure, a cloud of red hair and songs that consist mainly of obscenities (and how else, they were written by Shnur) did their job. For almost six years, Yulia was the "face" and voice of Leningrad. In 2013, she left the group and took up solo career. To date, the singer has released her debut album entitled "Fire Baba".

The image of a bitchy, liberated beauty attracted television people - for several seasons, Yulia became the host of the show #YaRava on the Yu channel. The singer also recorded several arias for musical TODD groups Korol i Shut. You can hear it in the songs - "Death Machine" and "Lovett's Confession".

Julia is an actress by education, she began to study classical vocals quite late - at the age of 16. Leningrad got into the group by accident - in the St. Petersburg musical get-together everyone knows each other. In life, Yulia Kogan is not much like her stage image - calm and quiet, she is married, brings up her daughter Lisa and plays as a hobby in the Entreprise Theater named after. A. Mironova.

Quote: It is somewhat problematic to get away from the image that I had in the Leningrad group. This is something akin to actors who have become popular thanks to one role. You have to pay for it, not the whole audience is ready to see something different in me. I can be touching and tender on stage, or I can be tough. And for this I do not need to swear obscene words into the microphone. I'm a little worried about the audience's reaction. People are now in some confusion: they do not know which Yulia Kogan they are going for. They don't know what to expect from me. But this is a kind of challenge, and it's interesting. I want to reach such a level of perception of my solo image that the lyrical songs performed by me are completely understandable to the audience who came to the concert.

Daria Nookie Stavrovich

Where did you play: SLOT, Nuki

Genres: alternative rock, nu metal

What's cool: Daria Stavrovich, or Nookie, has been the female "voice" of the Slot group for many years. Dasha was born in the Arkhangelsk region, studied in the Nizhny Novgorod music school and then in Moscow. Since childhood, being fond of creativity, little Dasha at first gravitated towards drawing, but then she was fascinated by music. Having got into the Slot group at the age of 20, thanks to friends, she stayed there - today, together with Dasha, 7 albums have already been recorded, and it’s hard to imagine someone else in this group in Nuka’s place. The singer also created her solo project Nuki, which has two releases to its credit.

Quote: I got into the Slot by a lucky chance. We do contemporary music for the youth and for all who are young at heart. With our creativity, we are trying to express our perception of the world, to show how everything is interconnected in it. We do not say: “Girlfriend, look at me, do as I do ...” We say: “If you do this, then it will be like this, and then you will figure it out yourself.” My mother watches our performances on TV. Sometimes he calls, scolds for the slang that I use in my speech. Parents know our work, but do not always understand it. Probably because of the age barrier.

Zhanna Aguzarova

Where did you play: Bravo

Genres : rock, pop rock, beat, glam rock, rockabilly

Aliases: Ivanna Anders, Nintin Nintys

What is cool: The name of Zhanna Aguzarova is always associated with outrageousness, space and a beautiful piercing voice. And of course, with the Bravo group. Despite the fact that Aguzarova in recent times not really frequent guest in public, she still remains popular, and almost everyone knows the songs performed by her. In 1983 she joined the Bravo group (then still Postscriptum). In 1988, Aguzarova left the group to pursue a solo career. From 1991 to 1996 she lived in America and very little is known about this period.
This is a woman without age and timeless, she is like an alien from outer space, we do not know one hundred percent for sure anything about her: even the date and place of birth are surrounded by mystery. And what can be said about a man who, having arrived in Moscow, lived for some time with a fake passport, and only because Zhanna did not have her own. Taking someone else's passport and correcting the name from "Ivan" to "Ivanna", Zhanna Khasanovna pretended to be the daughter of diplomats Ivanna (later - Yvonne) Anders, for which she subsequently paid first with detention and then with forced labor.

The singer made a real revolution in her time music scene: her outrageous clothing style, fantastic outfits, eccentric hairstyles and hair color, as well as unpredictable behavior on stage and in interviews left their mark on musical culture countries. In communication with the press, Jeanne often spoke about her connection with the Martians, now that her trace in music is being lost, fans believe that she flew home.

Quote: There is no old in art - there is real Happiness everywhere, it is around us. They say it's good where we're not, but it's not true: it's good where we are

Where did you play: Track, Nastya

Genres: Russian rock

What's cool: Nastya Poleva is the first truly famous woman in Russian rock. Our first female rock star. It is doubly symbolic that this could only appear in Sverdlovsk, far from the centers of civilization, where rock life flowed according to its own laws. Her debut album, Tatsu, became the country's first major all-female rock album. This was facilitated by the new, soft and lyrical manner of Nastya's singing, and unusual, full of references to exotic countries, fashionable arrangements, and surrealistic texts. Nastya's career after this album (and the tragedy with another album, The Bride, stolen from the studio) can hardly be called triumphant, but even after moving to St. Petersburg, she retained both her unquestioned musical authority and the status of a living legend of Russian rock.

The singer made a real revolution in her time on the music scene: her outrageous clothing style, fantastic outfits, eccentric hairstyles and hair color, as well as unpredictable behavior on stage and in interviews left their mark on the musical culture of the country. In communication with the press, Jeanne often spoke about her connection with the Martians, now that her trace in music is being lost, fans believe that she flew home.

Happiness is everywhere, it is all around us. They say it's good where we're not, but it's not true: it's good where we are

Metal band from Sweden, fronted by vocalist Liv Jagrell. Business card Sister Sin is Jagrell's raucous and aggressive vocals and heavy guitar riffs. If you love rock, you will not remain indifferent.

The band disbanded in 2015, but if you want more Jagrell, you can check out her solo album.

It's a real pleasure to listen to bands like Sister Sin who just play heavy metal with no bullshit. Like the good old 80s.

Hysterica

  • Active years: 2005–…
  • Sweden.
  • Heavy metal.

The female ensemble Hysterica fully justifies its name thanks to the hysterically shrill singing of the leader Annie De Ville. However, when she stops screaming, it turns out that she has a clear and pleasant voice. As for the music, one of the reviewers of the profile site Encyclopaedia Metallum called Hysterica the female version of Manowar. Good or not, it's up to you.

The Metalwar album is what every heavy metal album should be. Energetic, funny and impetuous.

halestorm

  • Active years: 1997–…
  • Hard rock.

Lizzy Hale and her brother founded Halestorm as teenagers. The group performs exciting hard rock, which makes you want to dance to. And Lizzy Hale is probably one of the best vocalists in the metal scene.

Crucified Barbara

  • Active years: 1998–2016
  • Sweden.
  • Heavy metal, hard rock.

A delightful female quartet, again from Sweden. Incendiary rock music with a slightly dirty and harsh sound - and the incomparable voice of Mia Coldhart with a charming sexual huskyness. Unfortunately, in June 2016, the members announced that the activities of the group were over. Nevertheless, apparently, they still intend to continue to create.

Vocalist Mia Coldhart's remarkably raw and predatory delivery in a metal frame makes Crucified Barbara's sound particularly sincere. These passionate Swedes have enough great songs like Electric Sky and Do You Want Me to win hearts and minds.
