Driving a car with a manual transmission

It would seem that it can be difficult to start a car? However, this seemingly simple procedure has a very great importance for engine health. To the question "How to start the car?" sometimes even experienced drivers cannot answer.

How to start a car with mechanics?

If you have, the rules for starting the engine are as follows:
  • Check to be in the neutral position.
  • Before starting a car with a manual transmission, put it on the handbrake or depress the brake pedal.
  • To make it easier to start the engine, it is better to depress the clutch pedal (there are some cars that do not start at all without the clutch pedal depressed),
  • Turn the ignition key clockwise to the ACC (II) position. The ignition will turn on and the indicators will light up.
  • Wait for the lights to turn off (usually takes 3-5 seconds) and then turn the key to the next position to start the starter.
  • It takes 3-5 seconds to start a working starter, if the engine has not started during this time, return the key to its original position, wait a minute and try again.
  • Depending on the conditions in which you start the car, the engine can be warmed up.
  • How to start a car with a carburetor?

It has its own peculiarity in starting the engine: if you want to start the engine on a cold one, before turning the key in the ignition, you need to press the gas pedal once or twice. At this point, the carburetor plug closes, and a small amount of fuel enters the engine. However, if after several presses on the gas pedal the engine does not start, you should not be zealous, otherwise there is a risk of simply flooding the engine. When starting a carburetor engine, you do not need to press the gas pedal hot. Some carburetor cars (for example, VAZs or old carburetor foreign cars) have a choke handle, which is a mechanical control handle for the carburetor starting device. With this knob, you can adjust the ratio of gasoline and air in the fuel-air mixture. In cold weather, when starting the carburetor engine, the choke is pulled out and, as the engine warms up, it sinks back. In warm weather, the choke does not need to be pulled out completely, and in the heat it can not be used at all.

How to start a car with an automatic?

The procedure for starting the engine is as follows:
  • Make sure it is in Park (P) or Neutral (N).
  • Depress the brake pedal and hold it while starting the engine.
  • Insert the key into the ignition lock and turn it clockwise to turn on the ignition. As soon as the instrument panel self-diagnosis is completed and all indicators turn off, turn the key further to start the engine. If the start did not occur within 3-5 seconds, return the key to its original position, wait a minute and try again.
  • If necessary, warm up the engine and automatic transmission after starting.
  • How to start a car with a Start/Stop Engine button?

Many drivers who first see the Start / Stop Engine button in the car instead of the usual ignition switch are confused and cannot immediately figure out how to start the engine.
In fact, everything is very simple: to start the engine, you need to depress the brake pedal, and then press the Start / Stop Engine button. If you press the button without depressing the brake pedal, the ignition will turn on, but the car will not start.

How to start a car correctly?

For experienced drivers, the question of how to start the car correctly does not arise at all, but for beginners who have only recently purchased a car or are just about to buy it, this information is more than useful and necessary.

The motor resource of the engine, its health and, as a result, the stability and reliability of its operation, first of all, depend on how correctly you start your car. There are a number of rules, the implementation of which will allow you to keep the engine running for a long time.

Starting a car with manual transmission

First, consider the question of how to start a car with a manual transmission.

First of all, put the gearshift lever in the neutral position. This is done with the clutch pedal depressed (we turn off the engine clutch with the gearbox), the parking brake must be in the closed position. Next, with the clutch pedal depressed, turn on the ignition by inserting the key into the lock and turning it clockwise until you hear a click. At the same time, the control indicators for oil pressure and battery charging should light up on the dashboard. This indicates that the ignition system is on.

The next turn of the key clockwise starts the starter, after a few seconds, provided that the engine systems are working, it should start, as evidenced by the characteristic sound of a running engine. Another indication that the engine has started and is running is that the control lights that came on at startup should go out. To visualize this, it is advisable to find a lesson on the Internet on how to start a car. Video, or rather its numerous options, will be offered to you in large volume.

We start the car with automatic transmission

    1. We put, if it is not worth it, the speed selector to the "P" (parking) position.
    2. We press the brake pedal.
    3. We start the engine without releasing the brake pedal. We insert the key into the lock, turn it clockwise until a characteristic click, while the indicators on the dashboard light up, and the fuel pump starts. After the indicators go out, turn the ignition key clockwise until the starter starts, while the key can be released, it will return to its original state. If the engine does not start, we make 2-3 more attempts with a break of 30 seconds. If the engine system is in good condition, the engine should start.
    4. After the box warms up, move the selector to the "R" or "D" position, based on the direction in which you want to start moving.
    5. Release the brake pedal and start moving.

An important point after starting the engine: it must be warmed up for some time. It is necessary to start normal operation engine lubrication systems, since oil mist - the main source of lubrication of pistons and cylinders - does not form immediately. Warming up is recommended to be carried out at idle with the number of engine revolutions slightly exceeding the number of idle revolutions.

While the engine is warming up, you can wipe the windows or clear the car of snow. By the way, about the snow. In winter, there are rules on how to start a car in very coldy.

In fact, the problem of starting the engine in winter deserves special attention, so it’s better to familiarize yourself with the methods for solving it by clicking on. Experienced drivers are preparing for winter in advance, and preparation is not only about replacing summer tires with winter ones. The issue that we have covered in the article is very important for every driver, since the correct start of the car is directly related to the operation of the vehicle and, therefore, to the safety and comfort of driving.

In this article, we will teach you how to properly start cars on mechanics (with mechanical box gears).

In most driving schools, they teach you to start off on the clutch alone, which is not sufficient in the city.

In this case, it is necessary to set the car in motion quickly so that no one drives you from behind, does not honk with headlights, they say, let's go faster. For this, in addition to the clutch, it is necessary to move off with the help of gas.

If you move from a place with only one clutch, then the car will drive in this case, but only on a flat road, where there are no holes, ledges and other obstacles.

Now we will consider in detail the entire process of starting the engine and setting the car in motion.

    • First, move the speed switch to the neutral position. This is done so that the engine of your vehicle is disconnected from the transmission.
    • This can also be achieved in another way - by depressing the clutch pedal (leftmost). In any case, in order to avoid a situation when the vehicle rolls down, it is necessary to keep the brake pedal depressed or use the parking brake (handbrake).

    • Next, the key is inserted into the ignition lock and turned in the direction of the clock. Light bulbs, indicators and lights on the instrument panel immediately light up (which means that the ignition is turned on). The key should be turned all the way until the starter starts.

This part, provided that you use a fully serviceable car in normal temperature conditions, only works for a couple of seconds before starting the engine itself.

For those who do not know how a car works, we will explain that a starter is a high-power electric motor powered by a battery that, when rotated, starts the engine itself, both gas and running on gasoline or diesel.

    • When starting the engine, you can release the key, which will then rotate to the ignition position.
    • If you have a modern car with a start button, then in this case the ignition key turns, the ignition system turns on, then you can press the start button and the system automatically turns on the engine.
    • Then we switch to first gear, put our foot on the brake pedal, release the hand brake, add 1500 revolutions (press the gas pedal), release the clutch until the moment of contraction (until the vehicle starts to move forward).

    • If the car started off, then the foot on the clutch pedal freezes and does not rise further. It is better to do such manipulations several times in order to feel the moment of clutch contraction. The car is in one place, you lift your foot off the clutch, the car starts to move, the foot freezes until the car goes a couple of meters. Then the clutch can be released further.

We carried out all these manipulations on a Ford Fusion with a manual transmission. We first put our vehicle in neutral and put the parking brake on.

Next, we squeezed the clutch, turned the key in the lock (the ignition system turned on), put our foot on the brake pedal (so the car would not accidentally roll back), removed the car from the handbrake, set the first gear, released the brake, added 1500 rpm (by pressing the gas) and release the clutch until the clutch engages.

The car drove off, the leg, which was on the clutch, froze. After passing vehicle 3-4 meters further we released the clutch. We continued to press the gas to maintain the 1500 revolutions set at the beginning.

In conclusion, it should be noted that it is not necessary to hold the clutch for a long time when it engages, otherwise the clutch disc will be fully adjacent to the clutch mechanism, and will scroll, creating additional load on the mechanism itself.

Also, do not give too high speed (4000-5000 rpm), which is also a mistake. In this case, when the engine is at its limit, and the clutch is in the semi-clutch position (clutch engagement), the smell of a burnt clutch may appear in the car interior, which must then be replaced. And this pleasure is not cheap.
