Johann Strauss son - Kaiser-Walzer (Imperial Waltz)

Co kraj to obyczaj - say the Poles, which means: each country has its own customs.
And this is true - in Russia, on December 31 of every year, someone certainly goes to the bathhouse, in Ukraine, someone drags himself to the Maidan, and in Austria, on January 1 of every year, lovers classical music and, especially, the music of representatives of the Strauss family, go to the Vienna Opera and the Great Hall of the Vienna musical society(Vienna Philharmonic).

These wonderful concerts gather an exquisite audience - and let’s say which conductors in different times led Vienna Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic - just remember Herbert von Karajan.

New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (1987)
Conductor - Herbert von Karajan

Strauss - Radetzky March - Karajan
Johann Strauss-father - Radetzky March - the final number of the New Year's concert of 1987
Conductor - Herbert von Karajan

Viennese philharmonic orchestra performs the "March of Radetzky", written by Johann Strauss the father as a greeting to the troops of Field Marshal Johann Joseph Wenzel Radetzky, who were returning after the suppression of the uprising in Italy in 1848.
Later this march became a parade march hussars Radetsky.

The recording was made during the traditional New Year's concert at the Vienna Philharmonic in 1987, which usually takes place in the Golden Hall.
Interestingly, in our time, the Radetzky March is the parade anthem of the Chilean Military Academy named after Bernardo O'Higgins.
At the stadium of the Danish football club Aarhus, this march is played whenever the home team scores a goal.
The march is performed before departure on all flights of the largest Israeli airline El Al.

Herbert von Karajan was born in 1908 in Austria-Hungary in the Mozart city of Salzburg.

From 1916 to 1926 he studied at the Salzburg Conservatory, already during his studies he developed a penchant for conducting.

From 1929 to 1934 he was the first Kapellmeister in the theater of the city of Ulm in Germany.

From 1934 to 1941 he was a conductor opera house city of Aachen in Germany.

In 1935, Herbert von Karajan became Germany's youngest General Director of Music.

In 1955 he was appointed for life music director Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he first performed back in 1937.

From 1957 to 1964 he was artistic director of the Vienna State Opera, worked with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. As part of the traditional Mozart Festival in his native Salzburg, Herbert von Karajan founded the Easter Festival.
The conductor died in 1989 in the city of Anif in Austria.

Herbert von Karajan was one of the most famous conductors of the 20th century. He left behind an extensive discography. This is all that can be credited to him, but, as they say, even the sun has spots.

In 1933, a few months after Hitler came to power, Herbert von Karajan joined the National Socialist Party, which to a large extent boosted his career. He conducted the operas of Richard Wagner, so beloved by the Fuhrer. However, according to contemporaries, at one of the performances, Hitler drew attention to the fact that Karajan was conducting from memory, without a score, this caused the Fuhrer's indignation and since then he has not attended performances in which Karajan conducted.

Karajan paid a lot of attention to PR campaigns dedicated to his performances and CD recordings. They remember such a case: a joint disc of the orchestra led by Karajan and three great Soviet musicians- Richter, Oistrakh and Rostropovich. They recorded it in one take, but Richter (a very demanding musician) wanted to repeat the performance, as something did not suit him in the first version, to which Karayan complained about the lack of time, since he wanted to have time to take pictures with everyone else.

Many blame Karayan for the fact that he prescribed very high fees guest musicians, thus overcharging his own fee.
But be that as it may, he was a brilliant and versatile conductor, although not all the works conducted by him collected positive reviews critics.

The concert takes place in the "Golden Hall" of the Vienna Musical Society ( Wiener Musikverein), gathers about 2,000 listeners in the hall, and more than 50 million listeners around the world follow its television broadcast.

The beginning of the tradition of holding a New Year's concert was laid within the framework of the Winter Aid program conducted by the German National Socialist Party in 1933-1943.

The first concert took place on 31 December 1939 in the presence of Adolf Hitler. In subsequent years, the day of the concert was moved to January 1.

Currently, the New Year's program consists of three concerts: preparatory (December 30), a concert on the eve of the New Year (December 31) and the main New Year's concert on January 1. The program of all three concerts is identical, only the cost of tickets differs.

For a long time it was possible to visit the New Year's concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra only by special invitation.

Since 1998, part of the tickets has gone on free sale, however, due to the huge demand for tickets, the concert organizers distribute them using a lottery held on the official website of the orchestra during the period January 2 - February 28/29, that is, almost a year before the event .

For 40 years, concerts were directed by Austrian conductors, including in 1955-1979 the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Willy Boskowski. Since 1987, each year one of the most famous conductors peace.

Traditionally, the concert program includes 12 pieces with one intermission after the sixth number. The repertoire of the concerto is, with rare exceptions, the Austrian light music late XVIII - late XIX centuries: viennese waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, marches of the Strauss family (Johann Strauss (father), Johann Strauss (son), Joseph Strauss, Eduard Strauss), as well as Mozart, Schubert, Joseph Lanner, Joseph Helmesberger, Otto Nicolai, Emil von Reznicek, Franz von Suppe and other authors.

At the end of the concert, the orchestra always plays three encores - the first one can change, but the second encore must be the waltz "On the beautiful blue Danube" by Strauss the son. The third encore is the "March of Radetzky" by Strauss the Father. Last piece performed to the applause of the audience, which is controlled by the conductor.

Until 1987, the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra had a permanent conductor, now world-famous conductors are invited every year. Among them are Lorin Maazel (1980-1986, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2005), Herbert von Karajan (1987), Claudio Abbado (1988, 1991), Carlos Kleiber (1989, 1992), Zubin Meta (1990, 1995, 1998 , 2007, 2015), Riccardo Muti (1993, 1997, 2000, 2004), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (2001, 2003), Seiji Ozawa (2002), Maris Jansons (2006, 2012, 2016), Georges Prétre (2008, 2010), Daniel Barenboim (2009, 2014), Franz Wesel-Mest (2011, 2013).
