Career

1992-2008: Early years and Big Bang debut

Kwon Ji-young was born on August 18, 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, for the Summer Olympic Games, which were just taking place in Seoul. Since childhood, Ji Yong loved to dance and enjoyed entertaining people, so his mother decided to send her son to the entertainment industry. He first appeared on television in 1992, at the age of five (Korean reckoning), on the children's educational and entertainment program BO BO BO (Korean: 뽀뽀뽀). GD talked about it on MBC's 'Come Play!', and the first footage from 1992 was shown on MBC's 'The Secret Star' every1. In 1994, the film "The Taebaek Mountains" (East Korean Mountains; Taebaek Mountains) was released, in which Ji Yong made his debut as an actor, performing episodic role. On episode 163 of Korea's most popular show "Infinite Challenge", they recalled this and showed stills from the film. In 1995, he was chosen as a child model for an advertisement in Shinsegae Duty Free. In the same year, Ji Yong was selected as a member of the group. Little Roo'Ra. The children's group danced to the popular hits of the Roo'Ra group at the concerts of this group, as well as at various festivals and television shows. After the release of Little Roo'Ra's first album "Christmas Carol Song" (1996), the contract with the group was terminated at the initiative of the record company. It was a real shock for Kwon Ji Young, after which he vowed to his mother that he would “never do that (become a singer) again.” However, soon after, during a ski trip with his family, Kwon Ji-young participated in music festival, which held the ski resort, and won first place. This festival was hosted by Lee Soo-man, head of SM Entertainment, who offered an internship at his then small agency to the winner. Ji-young trained under the record company SM Entertainment for five years, where he mainly studied dance. However, Ji Young left the agency as he didn't understand what he wanted to do.

In the third grade, thanks to his friend, Kwon Ji-young was introduced to the work of the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Inspired by their music, Kwon Ji Young showed interest in the style and started taking rap lessons at the age of 12. In 2001, he participated in the recording of the album "Korean hip-hop Flex". Although he wrote the lyrics for his song himself, he also admitted that his "English is terrible and the story in the song is banal and monotonous". Something like: "I'm young, but I'm the best." In the same year, Sean of Jinusean, a hip-hop duo under YG Entertainment, became interested in him after releasing their album Korean hip-hop Flex. He also recommended Kwon Ji Young to CEO company, Yang Hyun Soku . After signing a contract with G-Dragon, he participates in the recording of such YG Family songs as Hip-Hop Gentlemen, as well as in Perry's debut song (Perry) - Storm (Storm) and Get Ready. He later met Taeyang, who starred in Jinusean's "A-yo" music video and also became a trainee at YG Entertainment. Together they prepared to debut as the duo GDYB. They have appeared in the music videos of many YG Entertainment artists and performed at their concerts, as well as the annual YG Family concerts. However, in 2005, agency president Yang Hyun Suk stated that instead of a hip-hop duo, he planned to debut a male idol group. According to Kwon Ji Yong himself, he was very upset by this decision. However, he contacted his friend from high school, Choi Seung Hyun, with an offer to record a demo for the director and join the future group. In 2006, he participates with five other group candidates in a survival show called " Documentary about Big Bang” (Big Bang Documentary). In August 2006, G-Dragon made his official debut as the leader of Big Bang.

The first single album, released shortly after debut, featured G-Dragon's first official solo song, a cover version of "This Love" by American alternative rock band Maroon 5. The text to which he wrote entirely himself, he also participated in writing almost all the songs in the first full-length album of the group. In various interviews, as well as on the SBS program Thank you (Thank you) - the performer says that director Yang forced him to write a song every day, in the form homework, while a trainee at YG Entertainment . In 2007, Ji-young wrote, as he confessed, the song "Lies" (Korean: 거짓말; romanized: Geojismal; Russian: Lies) for his solo album. However, after listening to the demo, director Yang said that the song would suit the band better. The single was included on Big Bang's first mini-album "Always" as one of the title tracks. This song became the band's first hit, propelling them to the top of the music industry. Continuing to be involved in the creation of G-Dragon's music, he writes and releases with the group, in their next mini-albums, hits that continue the success of their predecessor: the album "Hot Issue" with the single "Last Farewell" (in Korean: 마지막 인사; romanized: Majimak Insa; in Russian: Last Goodbye) and the album "Stand Up" with the song "Day By Day" (in Korean: 하루하루; romanized: Haru Haru; in Russian: Day after Day) - both singles reached the top of the charts . His efforts and talent in making music earned him recognition as one of the best composers in 2008. In the same year, Arena magazine declared him the most influential person of the year.

2009-present: Solo activities and career development

Apart from being a member of Big Bang, G-Dragon is also known for his solo projects. After helping Taeyang produce his solo album, G-Dragon also recorded his own version of Taeyang's album title track, "Only Look At Me" (Korean: 나만바라봐; romanized: Naman Barabwa; Russian: Look only at me), which was titled "Only Look At Me Part 2". The single was released digitally. Along with bandmates Taeyang and T.O.P G-Dragon, he was featured on Lexy's song "Super Fly" for her album Rush. In May 2009, he took part in the work on the single "Rain Is Fallin"/Hybrid Dream" by the Japanese group W-inds.

After Taeyang carried out his solo project, G-Dragon released his debut solo album 'Heartbreaker' which featured several artists including 1TYM's Teddy, Taeyang, S-Kush as well as 2NE1's Dara. The album's scheduled release for April was delayed until August, which coincided with the artist's 21st (Korean reckoning: 22nd) birthday. For the album, G-Dragon changed his image. The singer went blonde to match the concept of the release. Due to the popularity of the album's title track of the same name, the disc sold over 200,000 copies, earning it the title of "Album of the Year" at the 2009 annual Mnet Asian Music Awards. The second single "Breathe" entered the top 20 of the albums, while other songs - "The Leaders", "A Boy", "Hello" and "She's Gone" - after their release took the top lines in various charts . Almost immediately after the release of "Heartbreaker", Sony Music accused G-Dragon of plagiarism, stating that the songs "Heartbreaker" and "Butterfly" were similar to Flo Rida's "Right Round" and Oasis's "She's Electric", respectively. However, EMI, the promotional company for "Right Round", stated that they found no similarities between the two songs. On March 6, 2010, YG Entertainment announced that they had personally contacted Flo Rida's representatives to take part in the recording. live album G-Dragon "Shine a Light" Flo Rida accepted the offer.

In December 2009, G-Dragon held a solo concert at the Olympic Park to promote his album. The name of the concert - Shine a Light - was the words from the artist's song "A Boy". The concert itself sparked controversy, with ensuing accusations of obscenity and ambiguous content. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family of South Korea sent a request to the country's prosecutor's office so that the latter would investigate the violation of G-Dragon or YG Entertainment's agency of the country's laws by obscene performances and numbers of the artist at the concert organized by him. The singer was found not guilty, and on March 15, 2010, all charges were dropped from him.

At the end of the year, the album "Heartbreaker" took first place on the Hanteo chart.

In November 2010, YG Entertainment announced a collaboration album between G-Dragon and his bandmate T.O.P. The release of the album was preceded by the duo's worldwide showcase performance at the Times Square stage in Yongdeungpo, Seoul, streamed live on YouTube. To promote the album, the duo released three singles: "High High", "Oh Yeah" and "Knock out", which preceded the release of the album itself. All three compositions were incredible success. So, the song "High High" occupied the first line in the charts, while "Oh Yeah" and "Knock Out" were located on the second and third lines of the charts, respectively. The album itself was released on Christmas Eve and immediately became number 1 on the Gaon Chart with pre-orders reaching 200,000 copies.

In collaboration with Park Myung-soo, a duet called GG was created for the Seohae Ahn Highway Song Festival 2011, held as part of the television show Infinite Challenge. On June 2, the duo released a song titled "Having an Affair" which also features 2NE1's Park Bom. The song became a real hit, hitting the first lines of all Korean music charts.

In March 2012, it was announced that G-Dragon would return to the music scene as a solo artist in the second half of the year. G-Dragon also featured on English singer-songwriter Pixie Lott's track "Dancing on My Own" for her Japanese album along with fellow member T.O.P. .

The album earned GD the Best Male Artist award at MAMA; Top 10 (Digital) and CeCi Popularity Award at the Golden Disc Awards; best song in the heat of hip-hop(one of a kind) at the Korean Music Awards and many more.

Image and artistry

If an artist thinks of music as a job, he will not be able to create good composition. When someone is working, performing or just having fun […] it directly affects the music […] The more I work, the more I feel like I'm learning and growing at the same time. -G-Dragon

public image

During the promotion of the album "Heartbreaker", his hair change by dyeing his hair platinum blonde gained popularity among fans, becoming one of the best hairstyles of the year. In addition, his constant use of triangular scarves in his image became a trend among young people and was later called "Big Bang style scarves".

Despite his influence, G-Dragon admitted that he was unsure of himself as a musician, noting that he had to "change a lot of things, including the sound of his voice, because in front of other people, I was very worried about the results of my work" . Realizing that the opinion of the general public about him plays a huge role in the promotion of albums, G-Dragon believes that "how the public perceives me depends solely on myself, so it's only my fault if I give a bad impression." He also vehemently opposes performers being seen as a "product" of the entertainment industry.

marijuana scandal

On October 5, 2011, it was reported that G-Dragon tested positive for marijuana. The urine test was negative, however a faint presence of marijuana was found after examining his hair. The tests were done at the beginning of June and the results were received in July. He was charged, but since the results showed a low drug content and it was his first offense, G-Dragon was acquitted. According to unofficial information, he took a puff on a cigarette offered to him by a fan in Japan during a party in May. He was the only person present at the party who was later handed over to the Korean authorities. He admitted that he smoked the cigarette offered to him, but realizing that it was not an ordinary cigarette, he threw it away.

The scandal caused his activities to be suspended and YG Entertainment issued a statement that G-Dragon will be given time to realize his mistake. Since the singer was acquitted, he did not lose a single advertising contract and made his first public appearance after the scandal at the 2011 MTV EMA ceremony along with Big Bang.

Musical style and songwriting

Inspired by the music of the Wu-Tang Clan, in 2001 at the age of 12, G-Dragon took part in the recording of the annual album "Korean hip-hop Flex", which can be considered the beginning of his career as an artist. Early on in their creative journey, Big Bang positioned and marketed itself as a hip-hop group in the music market, but subsequently the guys moved on to experiment with electronic music, making it a new music trend in Korea. Influenced by the different musical genres inherent in the work of Big Bang, in 2009 G-Dragon released his first solo album "Heartbreaker", which is a mixture of R&B, hip-hop and dance songs. During the production of the GD&TOP collaborative album, G-Dragon chose a hip-hop sound, although he acknowledges that R&B, acoustic and Electonic music largely reflected in the album.

Since the start solo activities, G-Dragon maintains tight control over his music, stating that "the feeling of making a song is different. I listen to my feelings when I write lyrics or music, as well as using my own emotions and feelings when writing songs. In an effort to distinguish between himself and other composers, G-Dragon admits that "by spinning the music, giving it an unexpected sound, he creates completely different songs." And although the chorus is always the most attention-grabbing part of the song, he wants any part his songs were catchy. Before G-Dragon tried out as a solo artist, he also took part in the production of Big Bang's albums, writing the lyrics and music for most of the group's songs.

G-Dragon's contribution to creating his own music has earned him a lot of praise, but also a lot of criticism. Preferring to write lyrics that "sound like real stories," The Korea Times called him "a genius singer-songwriter," although the rapper himself said he felt uncomfortable being called that. His efforts in making music earned him the title of one of the best composers of 2008, and was chosen by many critics and members of the music industry as "a musician from whom they expect a lot in the future." According to a vote held in Japan, G- Dragon ranked fourth in the "God-given Rapper" category. He also topped the Forbes list as the "Hardest-Working Artist". he wrote for Big Bang and then the songs "Heartbreaker" and "Butterfly", which he performed as a solo artist.

G-Dragon began his career as a child hip-hop artist, probably hoping to achieve the same popularity and success that Lil Romeo and Lil Bow Wow achieved in the States. Also, he worked as a model. But still, he couldn't release an album and only participated in recordings with other YG artists.
In January 2001, GD debuted on the DaeHanMinGook Hip Hop Flex, where he appeared as a rapper on the compilation album. After his debut, he was chosen along with Taeyang to play the role of little JinuSeans in their music video, which was released in February of the same year (Video for the song A-Yo).
After that, G-Dragon started training for his planned hip-hop debut with Taeyang (GDYB). During that time, he appeared in the songs "Perry, SE7EN"a, Wheesung, YG Family and Masta Wu. GD has appeared in the music videos of many YG artists, performed at concerts with Wheesung, Gummy and SE7EN "ohm, as well as at the annual YG Family concerts. Compared to the rest of Big Bang, GD was most closely associated with Perry, who, in in turn, thought a lot about the talented boy and their relationship with YG was even described as "father and son".
The duo GDYB released two songs that were featured on YG Family's second album, but they never debuted or released their album. In 2004, G-Dragon and TaeYang were selected as the new faces of YG and were scheduled to debut that same year. Noh, Hyun Suk (YG) canceled their debut in order to form a 4~6 member group. It took two years (until 2006) when Big Bang was officially introduced to the Korean public through the Big Bang Documentary Reality Show (Big Bang documentary reality show). During these two years, GDYB participated in the creation of the SE7EN "a album and performed with it at the World Cup.
After graduation, G-Dragon decided to wait a year and not take the college entrance exam. He took his college entrance exams in the fall of 2007.
GD is the undisputed leader of Big Bang. He is also a rapper, vocalist, composer, author of many lyrics and arranger.
