The greatest villains in history: Darth Vader (English Star Wars - Darth Vader). Who is Darth Vader? Star Wars Why Skywalker Became Darth Vader

In this article you will learn:

Anakin Skywalker- Jedi of the human race. Anakin's original story is perhaps the most complete, as he appears in most of the Star Wars movies and cartoons.

Christensen as Anakin

Birth and childhood

The hero's mother was Shmi Skywalker from the planet Tatooine. He did not know his father, but there are rumors that he was a Sith who could control midi-chlorians. Since this is not confirmed, it is believed that the boy was artificially conceived.

He was born in 42 BBY on the desert planet Tatooine, but Anakin himself assumed that he had only grown up on an arid planet, where he arrived at the age of about three years.

Eni grew up as a blue-eyed, kind-hearted, hard-working boy who dreamed of one day becoming a star pilot. But his dreams were not destined to come true, since the Skywalkers were the property, slaves of Gardulla the Hutt.

After several years of working for Gardulla, he lost his family in races to a Toydarian, a parts dealer named Watto, and the Skywalkers found a new owner.

At the age of eight, Anakin first learned about the Sith. About the great wars of the past, he was told by an old Republican pilot who believed that not all Sith died in those wars and one managed to survive.

The hero was a very gifted child. He excelled in mathematics and engineering. At such a young age, Eni could collect anything. So he built his own car and robot , finishing work around the age of nine.

Hidden threat

In the 1999 film The Phantom Menace, we first meet a boy played by actor Jake Lloyd.

In 32 BBY, when the hero was only 10 years old, his life changed dramatically. Knowledge of technology and good nature allowed Eni to get acquainted with space travelers: a Jedi, a Gungan, R2-D2 and a girl - whom he mistook for an “angel”.

Anakin invited the new friends to his home to wait out the sandstorm, where he learned their true purpose of coming to Tatooine - to escape the Trade Federation to the senate on Coruscant in order to stop the invasion of Naboo. The travelers' hyperdrive was broken and Eni volunteered to help, revealing a desire to race the Bunta Eve Classic in order to win enough money to buy it. The mother could not refuse her son, in his desire to help.

Anakin, Shmi and Amidala

Qui-Gon Jinn saw Skywalker's potential, his lightning-fast reaction, and after checking, he was surprised to learn that his level of midi-Chlarians was higher than that of himself. Anakin, in turn, was very eager to become a Jedi in order to help everyone, which prompted Qui-Gon to think of freeing the boy.

Before the race, Jinn made a bet with the owner of the Skywalkers. But subject to Anakin's victory, Watto agreed to let go only the boy, leaving his mother with him.

The hero won this race. Now he was free. Anakin was faced with a choice: live on Tatooine with his mother, or go with Genie and become a Jedi. Skywalker left Tatooine, promising that he would return to free his mother.

Jake Lloyd as little Anakin

So Anakin set out on his first journey.

With Qui-Gon and Queen Amidala (the girl pretended to be her own servant), to whom Eni became very attached, he arrived on Coruscant, where he appeared before the High Council. The Council refused to train the boy, although Qui-Gon was convinced that Anakin was the Chosen One (the One who would bring balance to the Force).

The boy experienced the emotions left over from the life of a slave, so the masters felt that he could not achieve the state of peace that a true Jedi needs.

Qui-Gon, Anakin, Obi-Wan and R2-D2

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear breeds anger; Anger breeds hatred; Hatred is the key to suffering. I feel a strong fear in you.

Not knowing where to go now, Anakin trailed Jinn with whom he flew to Naboo on a mission to liberate the planet from Trade Federation occupation.

Coincidentally, Anakin took a direct part in the Battle of Naboo in space. He single-handedly managed to destroy an entire orbital station that controlled the droids on the planet, ending the invasion.

Although Skywalker emerged victorious, sad news awaited him on earth. In a battle with, Kawai-Gon died. The Dying Genie took Obi-Wan Kenobi, his apprentice, with a promise to train the boy and the Council was resigned to the fact that Anakin would become trained in the Force.

After the victory on Naboo, the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic himself promised to follow Skywalker's progress.

Obi-Wan's Apprentice

Innate abilities instantly put Eni above their peers, which began to nourish his pride. He often showed off, opposed the opinions of his elders, and did not show much respect for Obi-Wan, whom he looked down upon somewhat.

Obi-Wan became more than just a teacher to Anakin, he was like a father to him. Secretly, Skywalker believed that his strength was many times greater than the strength of his teacher and Kenobi restrained him. This fact made their relationship confusing and contradictory.

When Anakin did not get along with Kenobi, he went to his “friend” Palpatine, who flattered the pride of the Jedi with praises.

In 28 BBY, Anakin created his first lightsaber in the caverns of Ilum..

Attack of the Clones

Attack of the Clones is the second film in which we see Anakin. Its events take place 10 years after the end of the plot of the first part. In this film, the grown-up Anakin is played by actor Hayden Christensen.

Skywalker and Kenobi

In 22 BBY, Padmé Amidala, now Senator for the Chommell Sector, was assassinated. Anakin, who had not seen Padmé in ten years, was appointed as her personal protector. For ten years, Skywalker did not stop thinking about Amidala, and now that he was with her, his attraction grew into love.

On Naboo, where Padme was hiding with her protector, she answered him with consent, kissing him for the first time. Amidala was more prudent than Skywalker as she thought about the consequences. Anakin, on the other hand, was focused on feelings, breaking with the Order's tradition of being bound only to the Force.

For a long time, Anakin suffered from nightmares in which he saw his mother. A new nightmare he saw on Naboo caused him to defy orders to protect Amidala, taking her with him to Tatooine to find Shmi. On Tatooine, the hero learned that the mother was freed by the farmer Cliegg Lars, who married her. At the Lars farm, Eni was told that Shmi had been kidnapped by Tusken raiders, so the hero immediately rushed to find her.

Using his instincts, Anakin found Shmi, though it was too late. The mother died in his arms. This death caused such anger that the Jedi slaughtered the entire tribe of raiders. including women and children. Even Yoda felt Skywalker's pain and anger.

With the death of his mother, the Jedi had a terrible desire to obtain such power, with which you can save people from death.

Padme: « There are things that cannot be fixed, you are not omnipotent, Anakin.»

Anakin: « And there should be! One day I will... I will be the most powerful Jedi! I promise you. I will learn how to make people not die!»

Arriving on Tatooine, Anakin learned that his master had been taken prisoner by the Confederacy on Geonosis. Skywalker's goal was to protect Amidala, but she persuaded the Jedi to go to save Kenobi. Eni left Tatooine, taking his droid C-3PO with him.

Arriving on Geonosis, the couple were captured and exhibited, along with the previously captured Obi-Wan, in the arena of gladiators. Before the threat of death, Anakin and Padme confessed their love to each other. The trio was saved from certain death by the arrival of the Jedi and the clone army.

Leaving Amidala, Eni and his teacher began to pursue - the head of the Confederation and a former Jedi (note: Qui-Gon Jinn's teacher). Skywalker lost an arm in a fight with him. and almost died if Yoda did not come to the rescue.

Dooku cuts off Anakin's hand

Anakin was implanted with a mechanical arm and while he was in the Temple for treatment, Yoda and Kenobi tried to convince Amidala to end their relationship with him. Padmé lied and she and Skywalker soon married. A secret wedding ceremony took place at Varikino on Naboo. The only witnesses were the droids C-3PO and R2-D2.

Clone Wars

This war made Anakin a legend. He became famous as the best fighter pilot, earning the rare title of Tang.

In the war, Skywalker did not care about his own life, as he worried about the health of his teacher, Palpatine, the soldiers who acted under his leadership, and even the astrodroid R2-D2. More and more rules were broken by the Jedi. More and more he feared for Padmé's life.

Anakin vs Ventress

On a mission to the planet Naboo, Skywalker met Asajj Ventress, a dark Jedi who became a fierce enemy of both Anakin and Kenobi.

During the war, Obi-Wan took on the training of Padawan Halaged Ventor, with whom Anakin became very good friends.

The Clone Wars was a terrible event in the life of a Jedi. During the battles on the planet Jabiim, Skywalker received a message about the alleged death of a teacher. This made the hero more reckless. He threw himself into the thick of things along with clones, Padawans and Jedi. When Palpatine wished to evacuate Anakin from the planet, he agreed, soon learning that everyone he fought had died.

For his heroic actions in the war, Anakin was declared a Jedi Knight. The cut off scythe of the Padawan, Skywalker sent to his wife as a token of love.

Arriving on Coruscant, Anakin wanted to meet his wife, but fell into the trap of Asajj Ventress. The Dark Jedi promised to kill Amidala, which again plunged Skywalker into a rage. In this duel, the hero received his famous scar over his right eye. He emerged victorious, but Ventress managed to survive.

Anakin continued to participate in the battles for the Republic. While fighting on the planet Christophis, his first apprentice was assigned to the Jedi. After defeating Christophis, Anakin, though reluctantly, accepted the Padawan.

Anakin and Ahsoka

Together with Ahsoka, Eni completed quite a few missions. Together, they rescued Jabba's son, participated in a mission to liberate the planet Kyros, rescued Jedi Master Plo Koon,

Although Anakin and Ahsoka became friends, Tano left the Jedi.

In the Battle of Coruscant, when the Confederacy invaded, the Republic managed to win, but Chancellor Palpatine was captured.

Revenge of the Sith

Skywalker and Kenobi went to save the chancellor. After finding Palpatine, the Jedi engaged Count Dooku in battle. The Count was still strong, so he quickly knocked out Kenobi by crossing swords with Anakin. War-hardened Skywalker suddenly won, chopping off both of the Sith's arms.

After ordering Palpatine to kill Dooku, the Jedi beheaded him, taking another step towards darkness. To the chancellor's persuasion to abandon Kenobi, Anakin refused.

Returning to Coruscant, the hero learned the news that his wife was pregnant. After that, Anakin increasingly began to be tormented by visions where he saw the death of Amidala. Because of them, the Jedi wanted to gain access to the forbidden holocrons of the masters of the past. This was facilitated by Palpatine, who appointed Skywalker as his representative on the Jedi Council. This meant that Eni was supposed to become a master, but he still did not increase his rank.

The final point of distrust of the Council was that the Jedi asked Anakin to keep an eye on his friend - Palpatine.

The Jedi turned to Yoda for help. He spoke about his prophetic visions in which a person close to him dies, but did not reveal his identity. Yoda advised him to learn to let go of everything that he is afraid to lose. Skywalker was not satisfied with this answer.

Despite the Council's warnings, Anakin continued to spend time with Palpatine, who began to develop a dark side in him. The Chancellor told a story about Darth Plagueis (his teacher) who had power over death. This story made Anakin think that the dark side could save Padmé's life.

When Palpatine revealed his identity - Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord, offering Skywalker the path of the dark side to save his beloved, Anakin refused, reporting everything.

Windu, along with Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto were supposed to arrest the Sith when Anakin was supposed to stay at the Temple. But, of course, he didn't listen. Tormented by thoughts of Amidala's death, Skywalker followed the Jedi. Arriving at the chancellor, the hero found Windu, who was about to kill Palpatine. The fear of losing Padmé overwhelmed Anakin as he cut off the master's hand and allowed Palpatine to win.

It was too late to repent, there was no going back. Palpatine explained this as the Jedi's destiny and offered to join the dark side. The Sith Lord promised to discover the secret of power over death, so Skywalker agreed to become a student of Darth Sidious in order to save Amidala's life.

So, Anakin Skywalker “died”, becoming legendary.

« Now get up… Darth Vader!”

It is unlikely that among fans of cinema and pop culture there is a person who does not know He has become a symbol of the Star Wars space epic and its main antagonist. Despite the fact that he is a negative character, fans elevate him to the rank of favorite heroes. However, once one of the greatest villains in the history of the Galaxy (ours and fictional) was an ordinary boy who, for many reasons, became a servant of the dark side.

Childhood

Once the most controversial character in the Star Wars movie saga, Darth Vader was called Anakin Skywalker. For the first time, viewers meet him on the sandy planet Tatooine, where he, along with his mother, was enslaved by a parts salesman named Watto. From early childhood, the boy had a high intellect and highly developed technical abilities. Already at the age of 9, he assembled his own C-3PO droid and a real racing car. Qui-Gon Jinn immediately felt the great Force in the young slave. The Jedi's feelings did not disappoint when he learned that the number of Medichlorians in Anakin was much greater than that of Master Yoda. He tries to find out from his mother Shmi who was the father of the child, but she says that, besides her, he never had anyone else. This prompts Qui-Gon to think about a prophecy that says that a man will be born from the Force, designed to restore balance to the world. Then he decides to take the young technician as his Padawan, which becomes possible when he wins a bet with Watto, the condition of which was Anakin's victory in the races.

clone war

After ten years of training, Anakin masterfully masters Jedi techniques and has special talents. Obi-Wan Kenobi becomes his teacher, as it was Qui-Gon Jinn's dying request. In this part of Star Wars, Darth Vader begins to awaken inside a young Skywalker. Stubbornness and vanity accompany him everywhere, and the patronage of the Sith Lord, which is Chancellor Palpatine, further strengthens his sense of his own superiority. The first step taken towards the transition to becomes the mass execution of an entire Tusken tribe in the name of revenge for the capture and subsequent death of the mother. At the same time, he developed strong feelings for the former Queen of Naboo. He learns that his love is not unrequited, and contrary to the strict rules of the Jedi, he marries his chosen one in secret from everyone. Due to the inseparable connection with his wife, a strong fear of losing her arises in him, which also condones the formation of the Sith.

Transition to the dark side

The next significant move in the internal war between Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker is an assassination on the orders of Chancellor Palpatine, which violates the Jedi principle of not executing unarmed captives. Almost immediately after this, he learns about Padme's pregnancy, but his joy at this news is replaced by a strong fear that overshadows everything around. The Force shows him a future in which his wife dies in childbirth. Concerned about this vision, he shares it with Palpatine, which speaks of the young Jedi's unconditional trust in his patron. He is unaware of the future Emperor's artfully crafted plan to make Eni a Sith and his devoted student. Thus, the seeds of the dark side sown by him begin to sprout rapidly. When Skywalker learns that the chancellor is Darth Sidious, he tells the Jedi Council about it, where he sits as Palpatine's representative. However, he soon begins to realize that the latter is able to save Padme from death. In the climactic battle between Mace Windu and the Sith Lord, Anakin takes the latter's side, resulting in the master's death. From that moment on, he becomes a student of Sidious and, on his orders, kills all the young Jedi and separatists. It is the new trilogy that reveals to the audience the truth about who Darth Vader is, and gives an idea of how he became a villain.

Years of Sith rule

At the end of the new trilogy, Obi-Wan cuts off both of Anakin's legs and an arm, and his body is completely burned in a fire. However, the self-proclaimed Emperor Palpatine manages to save his student from death with the help of a special suit. Since then, the sword of Darth Vader turns red, and he himself commands the armed forces of his teacher, while on the Death Star. He captures Princess Leia Organa, who is his daughter, but does not yet know about it. In order to reveal where the rebel base is, as well as retrieve the schematics for his space station, he destroys Alderaan. At this time, the Millennium Falcon is attracted to them, along with Han Sol, Chewbacca, an aged Obi-Wan, Luke and the droids on board. They flee, but Vader manages to kill his former teacher. He later confronts Luke while he is trying to destroy the Death Star and senses that the youth is full of the Force. As a result, he has to run, and the planet destroyer explodes thanks to the young Skywalker.

Meeting with son

In the next episode, Luke will discover a terrible secret about who Darth Vader is. He ends up on Dagoba, where he studies with Master Yoda. However, at this time, the dark overlord captures his friends in order to lure Skywalker into a trap. He succeeds, and during a lightsaber battle, he cuts off the hand of a young Jedi, after which he admits that he is his father. Vader invites his son to choose his side and together overthrow the Emperor to rule the galaxy. Luke takes this news painfully and jumps into the garbage bay, where he is picked up by the escaped crew of the Millennium Falcon.

Repentance

In the next installment of the popular space opera Star Wars, Darth Vader is building a new Death Star that is supposed to be more powerful than the previous one. Together with the Sith Lord, he develops a plan to lure Luke to the dark side, because his skills could be very valuable to the Empire. Thus, he once again captures his son, who firmly decided not to resist, as he hopes that goodness remains in his father. Vader soon learns that he has a daughter, also endowed with the Force. Then he threatens Luke that he will lure her to his side. The young Jedi succumbs to anger and tries to strike down Vader with his lightsaber. The Emperor encourages him to kill his father and take his place, but Skywalker does not give in and discards the weapon. While Palpatine inflicts heavy lightning strikes on Luke, Darth Vader realizes that he cannot allow the death of his son and dumps his master into the mine, where he dies. However, Anakin's life support is damaged. Taking off his helmet, he speaks the last words, and his healed soul finds peace.

Armor

It is thanks to the black cape and helmet that most people know who Darth Vader is. This armor was specifically designed to keep an injured Skywalker alive, without it he would almost immediately be unable to breathe. Sith tradition dictates that heavy black suits be worn. In total, 2 different outfits were created for each of the trilogies. Their design and construction took a lot of time and effort, which in the end paid off.

actors

As many as 4 actors participated in creating the image of Darth Vader. In the first part of the new trilogy, little Anakin was played by Jake Lloyd, and in the next two, Skywalker was replaced by Hayden Christensen, who also appears in the sixth episode in the guise of a ghost. With the original trilogy, things are more complicated. In all three parts, in a suit, he was replaced by the British swordsman Bob Anderson during sword battles. The voice of Darth Vader belongs to James Earl Jones, and in parts 3 to 6. And when his hero takes off his mask, the audience opens the face of the actor Sebastian Shaw. Probably, this is one of the few characters in the history of cinema, whose image was embodied at the same time by such a large number of performers and became truly iconic.

Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history. His image is easily recognizable, and the phrase "Luke, I'm your father" has firmly entered our lives, becoming a meme and an occasion for numerous parodies and jokes. Now the next movie from the Star Wars series has been released - Rogue One, and in it we will see Darth Vader again. Here are 15 interesting and little-known facts about the Dark Lord of the Sith for everyone who loves this saga. And may the Force be with you!

15. He had a military rank

Everyone knows that Darth Vader is the right hand of Emperor Palpatine, but not everyone is aware that the title "emperor's emissary" was created specifically for him. It gave him enormous military powers. That was why he had the right to take command of the Death Star battlestation, despite the fact that it already had a commander - Wilhuff Tarkin. As the emperor's apprentice and envoy, Vader became, in effect, the second-in-command in the empire, with titles like Dark Lord of the Sith and Warlord. And later, after taking control of the Executor - the largest Imperial warship - he apparently officially became the Supreme Commander.

14 Imperial Propaganda Claims Anakin Skywalker Died In The Jedi Temple

James Luceno's sci-fi book "Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader" reveals that after the events of Episode 3 ("Revenge of the Sith"), everyone in the galaxy was convinced that Jedi Anakin Skywalker - the Chosen One - died heroically on Coruscant during during the battle at the Jedi Temple. Imperial propaganda also supported this official story, and Vader spent the next twenty years trying to forget the past and erase his previous identity.

Most of the inhabitants of the galaxy, ruled by the new Galactic Empire, are also convinced that the Jedi Order not only rebelled against Councilor Palpatine, forcing him to take drastic measures and destroy the Jedi, but also had a hand in unleashing the clone wars. The truth that Anakin went over to the dark side and betrayed his comrades in the temple, almost no one knows (only survivors like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda). This is how the situation looks at the beginning of the original trilogy.

13. After learning about his children, he planned to betray the emperor

Although fans know that Vader betrayed the emperor at the end of Episode 6 ("Return of the Jedi"), his motivation has never been explained. After the Battle of Yavin, Vader assigned the bounty hunter Boba Fett to find out all about the rebel that had destroyed the Death Star. It was then that he was informed that the man's name was Luke Skywalker. Realizing that Palpatine has been lying to him all these years and that his children are alive, Vader becomes furious. This explains his motivation and offer to help Luke overthrow the emperor in "The Empire Strikes Back". Vader planned this in full accordance with the Sith code of conduct: an apprentice would never rise higher until he was rid of his master.

12. He had three teachers and many secret students

After Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader, he trained the Sith as well. So, according to the plot of the video game "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" Vader, planning a plot to overthrow Palpatine, secretly took several students. The first of these was Galen Marek, alias Starkiller, a descendant of the Jedi killed by Vader during the Great Purge. Vader trained Marek since childhood, but Marek died on the Death Star shortly before the Rebel Alliance was founded. Vader then created a perfect and much more powerful clone of Marek using his genetic template. This clone - the Dark Apprentice - was supposed to take Marek's place. The next student after him was Thao, a former Jedi Padawan (this story is considered non-canonical today). Vader then took on several more students - Haris, Lumiya, Flint, Rillao, Hethrir, and Antinnis Tremaine.

11 He Tried To Learn To Breathe Without A Safety Helmet

Many people remember the scene from "The Empire Strikes Back" when Vader is shown at some point in the meditation chamber - he is without a helmet and the wounded back of his head is visible. This special pressure chamber was often used by Vader to practice breathing without a protective helmet and breathing apparatus. During such sessions, he felt unbearable pain and used it to increase his hatred and dark power. Vader's ultimate goal was to gain enough power from the dark side to be able to breathe without a mask.

But he could do without it for only a few minutes, because he was too happy to be able to breathe on his own, and this joy was not combined with dark power. This is also why he so wanted to unite with Luke so that their common strength would help him not only to throw off the power of the emperor, but also to free himself from his iron armor.

10 Even The Actors Didn't Know Vader Was Luke Skywalker's Father During Filming

An unexpected plot twist, when Darth Vader turns out to be the father of Luke Skywalker, is perhaps one of the most famous in the history of cinema. During the filming of The Empire Strikes Back, this plot was kept strictly secret - only five people knew about it: director George Lucas, director Irvin Kershner, screenwriter Lawrence Kazdan, actor Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and actor James Earl Jones, voiced Darth Vader.

Everyone else, including Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo), only learned the truth by attending the movie premiere. When the confession scene was filmed, actor David Prowse spoke a line given to him that sounded like "Obi-Wan killed your father", and the text "I am your father" was recorded over later.

9. Darth Vader was played by seven actors

Voice actor James Earl Jones gave Darth Vader his famous deep, booming voice, but in the original Star Wars trilogy, Vader was played by David Prowse. The six-foot-tall British champion weightlifter was perfect for the role, but had to be re-voiced due to his thick Bristol accent (which made him furious). Bob Anderson acted as an understudy who performed combat tricks - as Prowse constantly broke lightsabers.

Sebastian Shaw played the unmasked Vader in Return of the Jedi, Jake Lloyd played the young Anakin in The Phantom Menace, Hayden Christensen played the grown-up Anakin in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Spencer Wilding plays Darth Vader in Rogue One.

8 He Originally Had A Different Name And A Different Voice

Since Darth Vader is the central character in Star Wars, it's no surprise that this character was written first when the script was created. But at first his name was Anakin Starkiller (this is the name, according to the plot of the video game "The Force Unleashed" by his secret student). The original trailer for Star Wars was written in 1976 by legendary director Orson Welles. It was in the voice of Wells that George Lucas wanted to voice Darth Vader, but the producers did not approve of this idea - it seemed to them that the voice would be too recognizable.

7. According to one theory, it was created by Palpatine and Darth Plagueis

Anakin Skywalker's mother, Shmi Skywalker, says in The Phantom Menace that she carried and gave birth to Anakin without a father. Qui-Gon is understandably taken aback by this claim, but after testing Anakin's blood for midi-chlorians, he becomes convinced that it is indeed the result of a virgin birth, purely through the influence of the Force. Then everything else is logical: the power of Vader, the high level of midi-chlorians in the blood and the status of the Chosen One - the one who must bring the Force into balance.

But one of the fan theories suggests a darker and more real possibility of Anakin's birth. In Revenge of the Sith, Advisor Palpatine tells Anakin about the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, who knew how to use midi-chlorians to create life. According to this theory, either Plagueis himself or his apprentice Palpatine could experiment and create Anakin in an attempt to obtain a powerful ruler of the Force.

6. A whole team worked on the costume and sound effects

As originally planned by Lucas, Darth Vader did not have any helmet - instead, his face was wrapped in a black scarf. The helmet was supposed only as part of a military uniform - after all, you need to somehow move from one starship to another. In the end, it was decided that Vader would wear this helmet at all times. Both the helmet and the rest of the ammunition of Vader and the Imperial military Lucas were inspired by the uniforms of the Nazis and the helmets of Japanese military leaders. Vader's famous heavy breathing was created by sound producer Ben Burtt. He placed a small microphone in the mouthpiece of a scuba regulator and recorded the sound of his breathing.

5 Actor David Prowse And Director George Lucas Hate Each Other

The feud between Lucas and Prowse has become legendary among the Star Wars crew. At first, Prowse thought that his voice was being used for the film and was terribly upset by the voice acting. During the filming of episodes 5 and 6, Prowse ruined the lives of everyone on set by not bothering to say the lines that were written in his role, and instead chatting some kind of nonsense. For example, you had to say "Asteroids don't bother me, I need this ship," and he calmly said: "Hemorrhoids don't bother me, I need to take a shit."

Prowse was also upset that he was replaced as an understudy in the fight scenes despite being physically fit. But he kept breaking lightsabers. Lucas later accused Prowse of leaking secret information that Vader was Luke's father. The actor also did not like the fact that the audience would not see his face on the screen: Vader without a mask was played by another actor. The strained relationship between Lucas and Prowse came to a head when Prowse starred in the 2010 anti-Lucas film The People vs. George Lucas. This overwhelmed the director's patience and he struck Prowse out of all future Star Wars productions.

4 There Was An Alternate Ending In Which Luke Becomes The New Vader

Return of the Jedi ends with the good guys winning and everyone celebrating. But Lucas originally intended a darker ending to his sci-fi saga. Consistent with this alternate ending, the battle between Skywalker and Vader and the subsequent scene with Vader and the Emperor's death lead to a different outcome. Vader also sacrifices himself to kill the emperor, and Luke helps him remove his helmet - and Vader dies. However, Luke then puts on his father's mask and helmet, says "Now I am Vader" and turns to the dark side of the Force. He defeats the rebels and becomes the new emperor. It was this ending that would have been logical, according to Lucas and his screenwriter Kazdan, but in the end Lucas decided to make a happy ending, because the film was designed for a children's audience.

3. Alternate ending from the comics: Jedi again and all in white

Since we are talking about alternative endings, here is another one - from the Star Wars comics. In accordance with this version, both Luke and Leia are standing in front of Palpatine, and the emperor orders Vader to kill Leia. Vader is stopped by Luke, they fight with lightsabers and as a result of the duel, Vader is left without an arm, and Luke reveals to him the truth that he and Leia are his children, after which he boldly announces that he will no longer fight Vader.

Here the fun begins: Vader falls to his knees and asks for forgiveness, again returning to the light side of the Force and becoming Anakin Skywalker. The Emperor manages to escape, the second Death Star is destroyed, but Leia, Luke and Vader manage to leave it together. They later meet aboard the Command Frigate Home One, and Anakin Skywalker is still dressed as Darth Vader, but all in white. The Skywalker Jedi family decides to hunt down and kill the emperor, which they most likely succeed because they are a gang.

2. This is the most profitable Star Wars character

The creators of Star Wars managed to make a lot of money on their characters by selling related products, toys and the like. The army of fans of this saga is huge. On the Internet there is a special "Wookiepedia" (Wookiepedia) - an encyclopedia of "Star Wars", with detailed articles about everyone and everything that anyone can edit. But no matter how much other heroes of the saga are loved, Darth Vader is the most popular, cult character and, of course, it is on this image that one can earn the most. With merchandising revenues of more than $27 billion in 2015, for example, it's safe to assume that Darth Vader is worth billions - he's a big part of that pie.

1. On one of the cathedrals there is a chimera in the form of a helmet of Darth Vader

Believe it or not, one of the towers of Washington Cathedral is decorated with a gargoyle in the shape of Darth Vader's helmet. The sculpture is located very high and it is difficult to see it from the ground, but with the help of binoculars it is possible. In the 1980s, the National Cathedral, in conjunction with National Geographic magazine, launched a children's competition for the best decorative chimera sculpture to decorate the northwest tower. A boy named Christopher Rader took third place in this competition with his drawing of Darth Vader. After all, the chimera must be evil. And this sketch was brought to life by sculptor Jay Hall Carpenter and stone carver Patrick Jay Plunkett.

Anakin became a Sith thanks to the shortsightedness of the Jedi Qui-Gon, who saw great potential in the boy and took him from the planet Tatooine, where he was a slave to the merchant Watto.

Wise Yoda, recognized the boy's inclination to the dark side, rejected Qui-Gon's request to teach Anakin ("Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear breeds anger; Anger breeds hatred; Hatred is a pledge of suffering. I feel strong fear in you"). But Qui-Gon (no wonder he was a student of Count Dooku) was able to force the council to take Anakin as a student by binding his student Obi-Wan Kenobi with an oath (he could not refuse the dying teacher).

When Anakin grew up, Senator Palpatine "took a pencil" on him, immediately recognizing the demons sitting inside the young man. Palpatine (who turned out to be Darth Sidious) planned to make Anakin a Sith and carefully began to incline him to the dark side. He began to inspire the young man that the Jedi who are members of the Council are not there wise and noble, as they seem, and strive only to keep power in their hands (by the way, this was not so far from the truth).

The cunning Palpatine constantly hinted to Anakin that he was already a mature person and did not need mentors, awakening his protest against the power of the Council. Seeing that the young man is not indifferent to Padme, Palpatine brings them together (he pushes the Council to decide to make Anakin her bodyguard). The fact is, love awakens desire, desire awakens passions, and this is a direct path to the dark side (for the Jedi, emotions should not prevail over reason). In addition, Palpatine convinced Anakin (oh horror!), That dictatorship is better than democracy, so the best way to develop society is to build an Empire.

Gradually, under the influence of Palpatine and the consequences of childhood psychological trauma, the dark side of Anakin's soul begins to manifest itself more and more. Having become a powerful fighter, he was never able to curb his emotions and gain wisdom, having learned the principles of the existence of the Jedi. Perhaps the point of no return was passed by Anakin at the moment when, wanting to avenge his mother, he slaughters a whole tribe of nomads (both women and children).

Palpatine, seeing "progress" in Anakin's reincarnation, begins to seduce him with the prospects of the dark side of the Force (after all, it's stupid not to use its capabilities for good purposes). At first, Anakin decides to "surrender" his patron, but, seeing that the Jedi Windu wants to kill him, he saves Palpatine and indirectly helps him destroy Windu. After that, Anakin becomes a student of Palpatine, who no longer hides that he is a Sith Lord. By the way, one of the reasons why the young man became a Sith was the desire to help Padma (using the dark side of the Force).

After becoming a Sith, Anakin did many terrible things and even strangled the pregnant Padmé. Well, after a fight with his teacher Obi-Wan, as a result of which Anakin lost his legs and burned in lava, Palpatine, by connecting him to a life support system in the form of a spacesuit, finally turned him into Darth Vader, whom we know from the original trilogy.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... Anakin Skywalker is DEAD. For eight months now, the orders of the Emperor have been carried out by the mysterious Darth Vader. In some, the Empire inspires fear. Gives others hope. But for Vader, it brings nothing but SUFFERING... (You have nowhere to go!) (What are you doing?!) (Let him go!) (Surrender and you will stay alive!) (You will not be able to resist us!) (You will not run away!) (We'll shoot!) (Let him go now!) Enough of the lies. Open fire! Shoot him! Forward! (He's still holding it!) Shoot him! I'm hurt! Brother!!! Reinforcements on the way! And now you will answer for your betrayal. Keep on fire! He is ours! You have no salvation. You will suffer for lying. You will answer for not saving her. I have destroyed your enemies. Built an empire for you! But, like the Jedi, you gave me only a shadow of the knowledge that I was promised! You took everything from me! "Everything"? Foolish boy. You are suffering because of the death of your wife. Padme's fate was in your hands. As well as your fate - in mine. What a pity! You could become far greater and more powerful if you had the dignity to accept the path that lay before you. I made it for you. For you to remember me. He will bring you good luck. He is beautiful. But I don't need him to remember you. I will never forget you. Anakin... Padme... And that's why... You'll never crush me... Because you'll always be powerless over your feelings. you will always be powerless before me. Eternal Servant. Eternal slave! Skywalker! Anakin! Anakin! ANAKIN! ANAKIN! (Lord Vader, an urgent message for you) Master? Go on. The Emperor requires your presence. Lord Vader? As you please. Guards... Leave us. What will be the orders, Master? You are worried, my friend. I'm fine, Master. Really? Your anger rushes out like a whirlwind. He is focused. None Not focused Hidden You're trying to hide your rage from me. Why? I see. So what are you waiting for, Lord Vader? Subdue your anger! Slay me! I have no such intention, Master. Sorry sight! Mighty Sith Lord, Mutilated by midi-chlorians! Because of the attachment to the Jedi! There is no attachment. Anakin Skywalker was weak. I destroyed it. Really? Skywalker's powers are overwhelming yours! Is not it so? Not? Rise, Lord Vader. It is the will of the Sith to destroy all who stand in the way of power. Eliminate the opponent. Is not it so? And who is standing in your way, Lord Vader? Who is holding you? Who put your mutilated body in this suit? Who could it be? Only your hatred will destroy it. Use her. I... can't, Master. Therefore, my disappointment in you grows every moment. Accept the choice that brought you here. Dress in it. Or forever remain in the shadow of Anakin Skywalker. In the meantime... I have a task for you, my young apprentice. I feel a fluctuation in the Force. A powerful Jedi managed to survive in the Mid Rim. He must pay for the betrayal. As you command. He's hiding on my home planet of Naboo. And, of course, on the home planet of the late Queen Padmé Amidala. This is not a coincidence. He's calling you there because he knows who Lord Vader is. The clones reported that he was carrying a purple lightsaber. How is this possible? Strength. Here's how. And we both know that this particular Jedi has a mighty power. I will finish what you started, Master. Really? I hope. Eliminate this Jedi. Submit to the dark side, Lord Vader. Use the power that your talents have brought you. Only then will you break the chains that bind you. And you will discover in yourself a power never seen before. Only then will you destroy the opponent that stands before you. So I won't let you down, Master. Commander, prepare my personal shuttle. I seem to have had a sudden nostalgia for my native Naboo. NABU Omega, inspect everything there. Yes, sir! Attention! Welcome Lord Vader. The Jedi barricaded themselves in the catacombs and blocked all approaches. I had to make my way with explosives. We sent a squad of stormtroopers. None returned. Losing stormtroopers doesn't concern me, Commander. I need this Jedi. I'm using 501 As you wish, sir. Make way for the guys in blue! Understood, sir! Anakin... Let's go! Forward! Forward! Take him! We need reinforcements! Help us!! Vader. New Hope

Vader is tasked with recovering the stolen Death Star plans and finding the Rebel Alliance's secret base. He captures and tortures Princess Leia Organa and is by his side when Death Star Commander Grand Moff Tarkin destroys her home planet of Alderaan. Shortly thereafter, he fights with lightsabers with his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has come to the Death Star to rescue Leia. He then meets Luke Skywalker in battle on the Death Star, and senses a great ability in him in the Force; this is confirmed later when the youth destroys the battle station. Vader was about to shoot down Luke with his TIE Fighter (TIE Advanced x1), but a surprise attack Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han Solo, sends Vader far into space.

The Empire Strikes Back

After the destruction of the rebel base "Echo" on the planet Hoth by the forces of the Empire, Darth Vader sends bounty hunters in search of the Millennium Falcon. Aboard his Star Destroyer, he executes Admiral Ozzel and Captain Niida for their mistakes. Meanwhile, Boba Fett manages to locate the Falcon and track its progress to the gas giant Bespin. Finding that Luke is not on the Falcon, Vader captures Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO in order to lure Luke into a trap. He makes a deal with Cloud City administrator Lando Calrissian to turn Khan over to the bounty hunter Boba Fett, and freezes Solo in carbonite. Luke, who at this time is undergoing training in the possession of the Light side of the Force under the guidance of Yoda on the planet Dagoba, senses the danger that threatens his friends. The young man goes to Bespin to fight Vader, but is defeated and loses his right hand. Vader then reveals the truth to him: he is Luke's father, not Anakin's killer, as Obi Wan Kenobi told the young Skywalker, and offers to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy together. Luke refuses and jumps down. He is sucked down a garbage chute and thrown towards Cloud City's antennas, where he is rescued by Leia, Chewbacca, Lando, C-3PO, and R2-D2 on the Millennium Falcon. Darth Vader tries to stop the Millennium Falcon, but it goes into hyperspace. Vader then leaves without saying a word.

Return to the Light Side

The events described in this section take place in the film"Star Wars. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi »

Vader is tasked with overseeing the completion of the second Death Star. He meets with Palpatine aboard the half-completed station to discuss Luke's plan to turn to the dark side.

During this time, Luke had nearly completed his Jedi training and learned from the dying Master Yoda that Vader was indeed his father. He learns about his father's past from the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and also learns that Leia is his sister. During an operation on the forest moon of Endor, he surrenders to Imperial forces and is brought before Vader. Aboard the Death Star, Luke resists the Emperor's call to unleash his anger and fear for his friends (and thus turn to the dark side of the Force). However, Vader, using the Force, penetrates Luke's mind, learns of Leia's existence and threatens to turn her into a servant of the dark side of the Force in his place. Luke gives in to his rage and nearly kills Vader by chopping off his father's right arm. But at that moment, the young man sees Vader's cybernetic hand, then looks at his own, realizes that he is dangerously close to the fate of his father and curbs his anger.

As the Emperor approaches him, tempting Luke to kill Vader and take his place, Luke throws away his lightsaber, refusing to land a fatal blow on his father. In anger, Palpatine attacks Luke with lightning bolts. Luke writhes under the Emperor's torture, trying to fight. Palpatine's anger grows, Luke asks Vader for help. At this time, the confrontation between the Dark and Light Sides rises in Vader. He is afraid to rebel against the Emperor, but at the same time, he does not want to lose his only son. The Emperor almost kills Luke when Anakin Skywalker defeats Darth Vader and Vader returns to the Light Side. After that, he grabs the Emperor and throws him into the Death Star reactor. However, he receives fatal lightning strikes. In fact, Darth Vader is a kind of golem Palpatine. The resulting lightning wounds could not have killed Darth Vader, as in the comics, Vader's suit could withstand much stronger blows. Darth Vader dies due to a rupture of communication with the Emperor, who has kept him alive since the events on Mustafar.

Before he dies, he asks his son to take off his breathing mask so he can look at Luke "with his own eyes". For the first (and, as it turned out, the last) time, father and son actually see each other. Before dying, Vader admits to Luke that he was right and the Light Side remained in him. He asks his son to convey these words to Leah. Luke flies away with his father's body as the Death Star explodes, destroyed by the Rebel Alliance.

That same night, Luke cremates his father as a Jedi. And while celebrating victory on the forest moon of Endor, Luke sees the ghost of Anakin Skywalker dressed as a Jedi, standing next to the ghosts of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.

Awakening of the Force

Some thirty years after the events of episode six, one of the members of the First Order organization that replaced the Empire, Kylo Ren, the son of Leia and Han Solo, and the grandson of Anakin, obtained the melted and mangled helmet of Darth Vader. The film shows Kylo kneeling in front of the helmet and promising that he will finish what Vader started.

Fulfillment of prophecy

Upon first meeting Anakin, Qui-Gon Jin considers him the Chosen One, a child who will restore the balance of the Force. The Jedi believed that the Chosen One would bring rebalancing through the destruction of the Sith. Yoda believes that the prophecy can be misinterpreted. In fact, Anakin first destroyed many Jedi in the Temple on Coruscant and a large number of other Jedi during the formative years of the Empire, in a peculiar way fulfilling the prophecy and bringing balance to the Force, equalizing the number of Sith and Jedi (Darth Sidious and Darth Vader on the same side of the Force, Yoda and Obi - Wang on the other hand). After 20 years, Darth Vader kills the Emperor and sacrifices himself, leaving neither the Jedi nor the Sith. Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin, became the new Jedi after the final showdown with Darth Vader, completing his final training.

Armor of Darth Vader

Darth Vader costume- A portable life support system that Anakin Skywalker was forced to wear to compensate for the serious damage he received as a result of a duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar in 19 BC. b. It was designed to support and protect the charred body of a former Jedi. The costume was made in the ancient traditions of the Sith, according to which the warriors of the dark side of the Force had to adorn themselves with heavy armor. The suit was constructed using numerous Sith Alchemy techniques to augment Vader's severely diminished vitality and capabilities.

The suit contained a wide variety of life support systems, the most important of which was a sophisticated breathing apparatus, and gave Vader relative freedom of movement without the need for a flying chair. In the process of use, it broke down several times, it was repaired and improved. The suit was eventually irreparably damaged by a powerful bolt of lightning from Emperor Palpatine aboard the second Death Star after Vader saved his son, Luke Skywalker, from near death. After his sudden death, Vader in armor was buried by Skywalker in the ritualistic Jedi funeral ceremonies in the forest of Endor in 4 ABY. Some 30 years later, his grandson Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) bows before Vader's melted and mangled helmet, promising to finish what his grandfather started.

Anakin Skywalker trained under one of the strongest members of the Jedi Order, Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Thanks to a mentor, he learned almost all styles of lightsaber wielding, which made him an incredibly strong opponent, despite his young age.

Skywalker preferred to use the fifth form of combat, the most aggressive and aimed at physically suppressing the opponent, perfectly suited to the wayward and impulsive nature of the young man. Natural talent allowed him to quickly master new techniques, for the sake of his own ego, and, after a while, the Jedi began to consider himself equal to Grand Master Yoda himself. Anakin also mastered the art of dual-wielding lightsaber combat on his own, which came in handy during his duel with Count Dooku on Geonosis and several other times during the Separatist Crisis.

Over the long ten years of conflict, Skywalker, who received the title of Jedi Knight, took part in a great many battles and fights, continuing to hone his skills and abilities. Evidence of his skill can be successful battles with Asajj Ventress, Dooku's personally trained Dark Jedi, General Grievous' MagnaGuards IG-100, and his own teacher in training sparring. Relying on both strength and agility, Anakin could easily parry or evade enemy attacks, immediately responding with swift counterstrikes. The use of Jem So often forced the Jedi to call forth fury and anger in combat, pushing him more and more towards the dark side. During his final confrontation with Dooku, Skywalker surrendered himself completely to these dangerous emotions, allowing them to fuel his power and control his actions. With incredible ease, he overcame the almost impenetrable defenses of the count, who was once considered the best swordsman of the Order, cut off both brushes of the Sith Lord, and then brutally executed at the suggestion of Chancellor Palpatine. Before his death, Dooku recognized the opponent as the best fifth form practitioner he had ever seen.

Sith Lord

When Anakin Skywalker finally embraced the dark side of the Force and the title of Darth Vader, he transformed his fighting style into an even more brutal and aggressive one. Yet the young, strong, and gifted Sith lacked experience, poise, and concentration. Calling on the Dark Side, he could not quite control the granted power, anger clouded his mind and clarity of thoughts, preventing him from fully enjoying the benefits of the fifth form. Ultimately, the inability to control emotions was the reason for the defeat of the Sith in a duel on Mustafar.

Once imprisoned in an armored life support suit, Vader had to rely entirely on the newfound power of mechanical prosthetics. His fighting style became clumsy, consisting of nothing but sharp vertical strikes aimed at knocking him down and finishing off his opponent on the ground. Sith turned on the elements of Soresu and Ataru, trying to somehow compensate for his own slowness and slowness.

However, the dark lord quickly managed to overcome his limitations and created a unique form of combat that absorbed the techniques of many Makashi, Soresu, Ataru, Jem So and Juyo, even the highest, most dangerous. He turned the disadvantages of heavy cybernetic armor into advantages, using its weight and the power of implants to deliver incredibly powerful strikes. During the fight, the Sith Lord made movements only with his elbows and wrists, and not with his entire arm as a whole. Vader also regained some of his former mobility, learning to use the Force to perform acrobatic stunts. A two-handed grip on the hilt, unexpected and unpredictable lunges, a surprisingly quick reaction and amazing intuition turned the dark lord into a formidable opponent again. One of his favorite tactics was to force his enemies to release their emotions, convince them that they were pushing him, in fact, wasting all their strength, and then disarm them with one blow. Vader was able to apply various variations of his own style, using a one-handed grip for greater accuracy and economy of movement during an attack. He acted similarly in his fight with Luke Skywalker on Bespin. Going on the defensive, the Sith Lord held the hilt of his lightsaber with both hands, pressing his elbows to his body and holding the blade straight ahead, using only his hands. This position provided protection for the body and vulnerable control panel on the chest, but did not cover the limbs.

The Dark Lord learned from the ill-fated duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi and learned to control his feelings in combat, acting intelligently, deliberately, channeling the power of the dark side, not allowing rage to blind him. Vader often practiced with training droids that were stronger and faster than normal living beings. Such sparring helped the Sith's skills to always be honed, even with a long absence of actual combat practice. Despite the stiffness of his movements, he did not experience problems in duels with dexterous and frisky opponents.

Force abilities

Jedi Knight

Due to the fact that Skywalker was born with the highest concentration of midi-chlorians in the blood at that time and was considered the Chosen One, his potential for the Force was truly enormous. Very young and largely untrained due to his late joining the Jedi Order, Anakin was one of the most powerful proponents of the Light Side of his time. However, training with a lightsaber attracted the young man much more than practicing the techniques of the Force. As a result, his knowledge in this area was narrowed down to a few essential techniques.

The high level of midi-chlorians not only gave Skywalker a close connection to the Force, but also made him overly arrogant and self-confident. Achieving much greater success than other students, Anakin continued to feed his pride and conceit.

The Jedi was a true master of telekinesis, able to lift even huge objects with minimal effort. He could perform Force Leap, moving long distances in this way, and use Force Push and Mind Trick. During the Separatist Crisis, Anakin mastered one of the dark powers.
