Watch home TV via usb modem 3g. Features of connecting the Internet to a TV via a modem

Not so long ago, I connected a 16-bit game console to my TV (instead of a conventional antenna), I didn’t know what the Internet was at all, and I couldn’t even think that in 10 years it would be necessary to connect the Internet to the TV itself. In addition, not necessarily by cable, because now most TVs already have built-in Wi-Fi. Yes, technology is developing very quickly. Now a TV with Smart TV can even replace a computer to some extent.

I noticed that many users, after buying a modern TV, immediately ask themselves the question of connecting to the Internet. True, not everyone succeeds. Why, I will tell in this article. We will also consider the main ways by which you can connect the Internet to the TV. I will give an answer to a very popular question: "what to do if there is no Smart TV on the TV." But you want it to be able to, video over the Internet, install some applications, use a browser, etc. And we will also try to find out what opportunities the Smart TV function provides after the TV gets access to the Internet.

If I'm not mistaken, then the first TV with Smart TV and, accordingly, with the ability to connect to the worldwide network appeared in 2013. It was LG, still with the old system. Now LG has its own OS on all TVs, it's called webOS. A few years ago I bought a Philips TV. It already has Android TV installed, has built-in Wi-Fi and LAN input. Samsung TVs have their own Smart TV system. I didn't have this TV. I'm not a strong expert on Smart TVs, but it seems like LG TVs with their webOS are now the best on the market. In terms of convenience, speed, functionality, etc. But this is not accurate 🙂 Yes, and today is not about that.

Which TV can be connected to the Internet?

The Internet can only be connected to a TV with Smart TV. Everything is clear and logical here. If you have a TV without Smart TV, then it does not need the Internet at all. Since there are no applications with which you can watch videos, open websites, etc.

There are TV models without Smart TV, but with LAN input. Under the network cable. And it seems like you can connect the Internet to the TV via a cable from the router, but why, if it does not have smart functions. On such models, the LAN port is actually used to connect to the router. But not for accessing the Internet, but for viewing photos, videos and listening to music from devices on the local network.

How to find out if there is a Smart TV in the TV?

If you yourself chose and bought a TV, then you should know whether it has Smart TV or not. If you do not know, you can look at the box, it usually contains all the main characteristics.

If it is not written on the box, or it is not there, then pay attention to the remote control. There should be a button to call the Smart TV menu. It's usually signed that way. Philips TVs, for example, have a house icon on this button. On Samsung - a button with a multi-colored rhombus.

If you still have not been able to find out if you have a Smart TV or not, then look at its characteristics on the official website or in the online store (preferably popular). Just write in the search bar Yandex, or Google the model of your TV. For example: LG 32LN575U.

We open the official website, or some other popular resource.

We look at the characteristics:

In this way, you can check absolutely any TV: Samsung, Sony, LG, Philips, Panasonic, etc. If you have a TV with Smart TV, then it can definitely be connected to the Internet. You only need to choose the connection method: Wi-Fi, or LAN.

What to do if there is no Smart TV?

Very often I meet questions related to connecting TVs to the Internet that do not have Smart TV. Is it possible to somehow use the Internet on such models? No. I already wrote why above.

But there is a solution - Smart TV set-top box. This is a small device that connects to the TV via an HDMI cable and simply displays a picture on it. The device itself runs on Android. Simply put, your TV turns into such a large tablet. As a rule, manufacturers of Smart TV boxes develop a convenient control interface and optimize Android for the big screen.

There are a lot of such consoles on sale now. Small and big, powerful and not very powerful, with or without 4k support. Their prices are not high. The most popular is Xiaomi Mi Box 3 (with 4K support). Really cool device. Perhaps it is better to buy a TV with a larger diagonal for the same money, but without Smart TV and separately buy a set-top box than to buy a TV with the Smart function. Yes, it may not be so convenient to use, but most likely this set-top box will work more stable and faster than the built-in Smart TV. At least Android TV on my Philips is very slow, buggy and freezes.

There are also MAG 410, Dune HD Neo 4K, OzoneHD and others. The choice is very large. We buy a set-top box, connect it to the TV, and connect the Internet to the Smart set-top box itself via Wi-Fi, or using a network cable. Since it's Android, there shouldn't be any problems.

If the TV is with Smart TV, then we connect the Internet directly via Wi-Fi or cable

With an Internet connection via cable, everything is more or less clear. We need a regular network cable (twisted pair), which you can buy, or make it yourself according to my instructions:.

If your router is configured and distributes the Internet to other devices, then the Internet should work automatically on the TV. You can open the "Network" section in the settings, or something like that and check the connection status. If it does not work automatically, then you must select a wired connection (wired network) in the settings. It already depends on the manufacturer of the TV and the Smart TV system installed in it.

I have already written several tutorials on this topic:

Everything is shown in great detail.

What to do if there is no router / modem, but only a cable from the provider? If your ISP is using the Dynamic IP (DHCP) or Static IP connection type, you can connect the Internet cable directly to the TV. Everything should work. If the connection is via "Static IP", then in the connection properties on the TV, you must manually enter the addresses provided by the Internet provider.

If the connection is with a login and password (PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP), then you can only connect to the Internet through a router. This connection on the TV will not work.

Connecting via Wi-Fi

Nothing complicated either. There are just TVs without Wi-Fi. When there is no built-in module, but you can connect an external USB adapter. Not ordinary, as to a stationary computer, but branded. From the same manufacturer as the TV.

You can immediately go to the settings and try to connect the TV via Wi-Fi. There you only need to select your wireless network from the list and enter the password. Pictured below is a Philips TV with Android TV.

It’s better, of course, to find the specifications of your TV on the manufacturer’s official website and see if it has Wi-Fi, or if it supports external adapters (and which ones). You can follow the instructions at the beginning of the article (where we looked at the presence of the Smart TV function).

Many modern TV models have the function of connecting to the Internet. Moreover, the purchase of models with Smart TV generally loses all meaning if it is not possible to connect them to good high-speed Internet. Most often, the connection is made via a network cable or Wi-Fi wireless technology. But what about those who do not have either wired Internet or wireless? In such cases, the output seems to be the application USB modem supporting 3G/4G technologies. What is so complicated here and why describe the connection procedure, because, probably, it is enough just to insert the modem into one of the USB connectors on the TV? But no, no matter how smart TVs are, they cannot work directly with USB modems, although it is possible that manufacturers will eliminate this drawback in the foreseeable future. In the meantime, users who want to combine the incompatible have to go to tricks and look for sophisticated connection methods.

Internet from USB modem to TV via Wi-Fi router

One of the most common ways to connect a TV to the Internet using a USB modem is to use Wi-Fi router as an intermediary. There are many models of routers that work perfectly with most of the popular 3G/4G modems. In particular, this routers companies such as TP-Link, D-Link, Asus, Zyxel, Tenda and others.

When using this connection method, you should follow a few tips:

  • When choosing a router compatible with a 3G / 4G modem, be sure to specify whether it specifically supports the modem model that you have or that you plan to purchase. Such information can be obtained on the page of this device on the official website of the manufacturer.
  • Pay attention to connection speed. It should be borne in mind that for the normal functioning of Smart TV and the ability to watch movies from the Internet, a high speed of this very Internet is required, which not every 3G modem can provide. After acquiring a router and making all the settings necessary for it to work together with a modem, connecting the TV to the Internet can be done both via cable and Wi-Fi, provided that the TV supports this technology. If desired, through this router it will be possible to connect other devices to the Internet.

Often after buying their first TV with SmartTV, users wonder how to connect the TV to the Internet via cable. This issue is especially relevant for low-cost TVs that are not equipped with a Wi-Fi module.

We connect the TV to the Internet through a cable from the router

If you have a router and want to use it to connect the TV to the Internet, then in addition to the TV itself and the router (naturally, the router must be configured and in working order) you will need a network cable. The network cable must be long enough for you to lay it in a convenient way, and the cable must be crimped on both sides. If these two conditions are met, then you can proceed directly to connecting the TV.

Step number 1. Connect the network cable to the router.

First we need to connect the network cable to the router. To do this is extremely simple. Just plug the cable into any of the free LAN ports. It will be difficult to miss and stick in the wrong place, since the WAN port (which is used to connect to the Internet provider) should already be busy.

Step number 2. We connect the network cable to the TV.

Step number 3. Checking the Internet.

If the TV was turned on when the network cable was connected, then a message should have appeared on the screen that it was connected to a wired network.

If the TV was turned off, then you can go to SmartTV and open the browser. If the pages are loading, then the TV connection to the Internet via cable was successful.

Below we will look at a few typical questions that may arise when connecting a TV.

What to do if the TV is already connected via Wi-Fi

If your TV is already connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, it may not respond to a cable connection. In this case, you need to press the "Settings" button on the remote control and go to "Network - Network Connection".

There it will be possible to change the wireless network to a wired one and thus switch to using a cable.

How to set static IP addresses on the TV

If you need to manually set up the connection and set static IP addresses to connect your TV to the Internet via cable, you can do that as well. To do this, go to the network selection window, as described above, and click on the "Manual" button.

After that, manual network settings will appear on the screen. Here you can specify a static IP address for the TV, as well as a subnet mask, gateway and DNS.

How to find out the MAC address of the TV

The need to find out the MAC address of the TV may arise in various situations. For example, if you want to connect your TV not through a router, but directly to an Internet provider.

So, in order to find out the MAC address of the TV, you need to press the "Settings" button on the remote control and go to "Network - Network Status".

This will open a window with information about the network status, where the MAC address will be indicated, as well as other information about the connection.

You can also find out the MAC address of the TV by going to “Settings Support - Info. about the product/service"

The crazy technological breakthrough of the 21st century has led to the fact that even advanced users of electronic gadgets do not have time to keep track of the constantly updated functionality of computer and Internet devices.

What can we say about the older generation, for whom the lack of paper step-by-step instructions for a new TV is tantamount to disaster. Especially if it is a "smart" TV or Smart TV. It is these TVs that have the ability to connect to the Internet (via Wi-Fi or cable) and allow you to install all sorts of useful applications on them.

Today, even a child can figure out any smart system on their own, but in order to use all its capabilities with maximum efficiency, it is better to do it meaningfully. Therefore, here we will figure out how to quickly connect your new TV, Smart TV to your home network and the Internet via a Wi-Fi router.

For this you will need:

  • TV with one of the operating systems: WebOS, Tizen OS or Android. WebOS is installed on LG smart TVs, Tizen is designed for the latest Samsung models, Android is used by SONY, Philips, and many other manufacturers;
  • Configured via, connected to high-speed Internet;
  • UTP network patch cord - in case of cable connection of the TV;
  • compatible Wi-Fi adapter - for older TVs that do not have built-in Wi-Fi. The compatibility of the adapter with your TV model can be found in the instructions, which usually indicate: "Wi-Fi adapter for LG TV series 4".;
  • remote control.

IMPORTANT: in order to watch movies and TV shows online in good quality, you must ensure a stable and stable and high-speed Internet connection. If the Wi-Fi router is located at a considerable distance from the TV (on another floor of the house, in the attic, etc.), it makes sense to buy a long UTP patch cord. A cable connection will require more time and effort, but will provide guaranteed picture quality on the screen.

Connecting and setting up the Internet on the TV.

Make sure the Wi-Fi router is turned on (green lights are blinking). If you decide to connect to it with a cable, connect one of the LAN ports of the router and the corresponding TV connector with a patch cord.

If your TV does not have built-in Wi-Fi, plug in the USB Wi-Fi dongle. Take the remote control and go to the Internet settings on the TV itself.

IMPORTANT: All operating systems work on the same principle. Whatever OS is installed on your smart, you should go to "settings" and find the "network" section.

  1. select "network settings" from the menu and click "start". The operating system will start looking for possible connection options;
  2. a new menu will appear on the screen prompting you to select the type of connection: “cable”, “wireless”, “WPS”;
  3. by selecting "cable", it remains only to wait for the connection and exit the settings. WPS connection is available only on those devices that support this function - if your TV and router are among them, then select it in the menu and press the corresponding button on the router - the connection will occur automatically. In the case of a wireless connection, a list of available Wi-Fi networks will appear on the screen;
  4. select the desired network and click "next", "ok" or "connect" (depending on the OS);
  5. if the network is password protected, enter it in the pop-up window;
  6. click "done" or "ok" and exit the settings;
  7. check how the connection works - open, for example, a video on YouTube.

IMPORTANT: connecting to a home Internet network Smart TV with DLNA function allows not only watching movies online, but also playing recordings from computers, tablets and laptops connected to the same network - use all the available features of your TV!

Common problems with Internet connection of TVs (LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, etc.).

Smart TV malfunctions occur for various reasons and are accompanied by all sorts of information prompts that look similar to each other in different operating systems. Most often, the problem sounds like “no network connection” or “network unavailable”. What to do?

Practice shows that most often it is possible to restore an Internet connection by simply rebooting the router - just disconnect it from the mains for a minute or two. For a cable connection, check the contact (the light of the corresponding LAN port should be on). If the problem persists, contact your ISP.

Hello friends!
Today we will talk about how connect the TV to the Internet through a WiFi router and how to do it with a cable. I am sure that many of you have a modern LCD TV in your house, but far fewer people know that their similar unit has a built-in ability to access the worldwide web.

First of all, you need to decide how you can connect the TV via the Internet - if we are talking about modern TV, then this is either a built-in WiFi module, or just a cable. There are also models with support for an external wireless USB module, usually from the same manufacturer as the TV itself.

In order not to be unfounded, I will show the entire scheme of connecting TV through a WiFi router using a specific example from Samsung, which is in my apartment. But other manufacturers - the same LG - also have a great variety of models that work with Smart TV. When connected via a cable, the Internet signal will be better and more stable, with a wireless type, interference is possible, but there is no need to pull any wires through the entire apartment. At the same time, TVs with built-in Wi-Fi are most often equipped with an RJ-45 connector for cable connection. The choice is yours!

TV with WiFi module or without?

All TV can be divided into several categories:

How to connect a TV to the Internet through a cable router?

After you have overcome the painful process of choosing a TV, the most difficult part begins - setting up and connecting the TV via WiFi to the Internet. If you have opted for a more stable internet connection via cable, then there are several options.

Connecting a TV from Samsung, LG or any other company to the Internet (models from other manufacturers work with Smart TV in the same way) is also possible with a more complex routing system, for example, when using a shared access device.

With the theory sorted out, let's move on to practice. We stick all the wires, according to the above diagrams. After that, on the remote control, press the "Menu" button.

Select Network > Network Settings and press the Enter button.

It is worth noting here that your router must have support for automatically distributed IP addresses for connected devices on the network or a DCHP server. Otherwise, you will have to enter all the parameters manually. You will also have to enter the IP address, gateway and mask yourself if you inserted the Internet provider's cable directly into the TV set, bypassing the router. To do this, you will have to click the "IP Settings" button.

How to connect TV to router via WiFi?

Now consider setting up TV models with Internet access via wifi. To do this, a router configured in the apartment is required without fail - the scheme will look like this:

A sample is shown with a wifi adapter inserted into a USB port. If it is built-in, then nothing additionally needs to be connected to the TV set.

We also go through the remote control to “Menu> Network> Network Settings”. And now we go to the item "Wireless (general)"

A list of discovered networks will open. Choose yours and click "Next"

A window will open with an alphabet for entering a password for connecting to the network. To control the cursor, use the arrows on the remote, or simply connect a regular computer mouse or even a keyboard via USB - it will be much more convenient.

After that, the connection will start. If it didn’t work out, and your router has automatic distribution of IP, go to the IP settings and confirm the “Automatically obtain an IP address” item again. If your router is not equipped with a DCHP server function, or for security reasons the network is built with manual assignment of IP addresses, then assign your address to the TV in the router and then configure it on the TV itself, as shown above.

On this with the settings, almost everything. There is another item in the TV network settings menu - WPS. It is designed to automatically configure the connection, if the function is supported by the router - for this, it must have a "WPS" button on it.

If it is, then select the "WPS (PSK)" item on the TV and press this button on the router. Hold it for 10-15 seconds, and this will complete the automatic connection setup.

There is another feature - One Foot Connection. It provides an easy way to connect a Samsung TV to a Samsung router. If you have a router of this particular company, then just go to this menu item and wait for the automatic connection.

Finally, if your TV does not have a built-in wireless network adapter and is not supported by external ones, then you can purchase another special device - an Android TV box with Smart TV and WiFi support, which will take over the functions of receiving files from the device on which the program is installed - server, and a TV connected to it with one of the usual cables, such as HDMI or tulips, will simply act as a screen.

And finally, when all the settings are completed and there is access to the network, go to "Menu> Support> Smart Hub".

Smart Hub is a special service installed on your TV that gives you direct access to useful and entertaining information, applications and services from the Internet. Including here there is a built-in browser through which you can visit sites and watch videos, for example, from YouTube. The keyboard and mouse connected to the TV will facilitate this task.

Well, working with this application is a completely different story ...

Possible problems when connecting TV to the Internet through a WiFi router

During operation, errors may occur when connecting to the network. How to fix them?

  1. Disconnect TV from the network and turn it on again
  2. If that doesn't work, reset SmartHub. It is done like this:
    • Go to SmartHub
    • Press the "Tools" button on the remote control
    • Go to "Settings > Reset"
    • Enter pin code "0000"
    • Wait for the reset, agree to the license agreement and the confidentiality agreement, after which the application will be reinstalled
  3. If this does not help, then update all the TV software. To do this, go to the chain "Menu button> Support> Software update> Over the network". Wait for the update to complete and enjoy. If you cannot connect to the network at all, then you can update from a USB flash drive, onto which you must first download the latest firmware version for your model from the Internet.
