A certain Wi-Fi network is not working. Checking the status of a wireless connection

Very often I have to answer questions related to various problems that can be observed in the process of connecting to wireless networks. When Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop. It is during the connection process that users encounter many problems. It turns out that the Wi-Fi adapter driver on the laptop is not installed, the question arises of how to enable it, or how to fix the error that appears during the connection process. But even if everything is successfully connected, then there we can expect trouble in the form of lack of access to the Internet.

I decided to write one big article in which to collect solutions to all the most popular problems and errors. The main task is to describe everything in simple language, and analyze all the options point by point, and of course write about the solutions. This guide will work for Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. As a rule, most solutions are no different in different versions of Windows. As for the laptop itself, there is also not much difference. The tips are suitable for models from ASUS, HP, Lenovo, DEL, DNS, and even for ordinary desktop computers with Wi-Fi adapters.

Based on personal experience, comments on other articles, and the features of the Windows operating system, I have identified 4 main problems that you may encounter when connecting to Wi-Fi on a laptop. I think the problem that caused you to come to this page will definitely fit one of the 4 points:

  • First of all, we will figure out what to do when on a laptop Wi-Fi does not work due to the complete absence of any wireless network settings when there is no "Wireless Network Connection" or "Wireless Network" (Windows 10) connection in network connections. Also, when there is no Wi-Fi adapter in the device manager.
  • Let's find out why laptop does not see Wi-Fi network. There may be a problem when the connection icon is crossed out with a red cross, the inscription "No connections available". Let's take a look at the different ways you can turn on your wireless network.
  • There are often times when Laptop sees network but won't connect to Wi-Fi. An error occurs when connecting. Also, here I will attribute the problem when neighboring networks are displayed, but the laptop does not see the home Wi-Fi network.
  • Well, let's not ignore the problem when WiFi connected but internet not working but the sites don't open. Usually, the wireless network icon with a yellow exclamation mark, and with the status "no internet access", or "restricted". True, there are times when there are no errors and everything seems to be fine, but there is still no access to the Internet.

Having described the solution to all these problems, I hope to answer the question in as much detail as possible: "why does Wi-Fi not work on a laptop." We will consider almost all cases and problems that you may encounter in the process of connecting to wireless networks. To solve various problems and errors that will be discussed in this article, I have already written separate, more detailed instructions. I will provide links to them as the article progresses.

Before moving on to any settings, I advise you to look at the instructions for connecting to wireless networks: We have, and a separate one. Especially if you are doing this for the first time. Perhaps they simply did not understand all the nuances.

If we can't connect, we'll figure it out.

Checking for a Wi-Fi adapter and driver

The first thing I advise you to do is to check the operation of the Wi-Fi adapter. Make sure it works and the driver is installed for it. At this stage, there may be two problems:

  • The adapter itself is just broken (hardware failure). This happens very rarely.
  • And a very common problem Wi-Fi adapter driver not installed. Or the installed driver is not working properly. This happens very often on new laptops, or immediately after installing or reinstalling Windows. If Windows 10 almost always automatically installs the driver on the wireless adapter (although not always working), then in previous versions of Windows this must be done manually. In one of the articles I already wrote,

To check this, just go to the device manager. It can be found through a search. Or press the keyboard shortcut Win+R, enter the command (can be copied) devmgmt.msc, and click Ok.

Immediately open the "Network Adapters" tab. There should be an adapter in the name of which will be "Wireless", or "Wi-Fi". This is the adapter through which the laptop connects to Wi-Fi. If you have one, then pay attention to the icon next to the name. It should be the same as mine in the screenshot below.

If there is no wireless adapter:

  • If you have only one adapter there, a network card (LAN), and no wireless adapter, then most likely this means that you need to install a driver.
You need to go to the website of the manufacturer of your laptop, find your model there (most often via search), go to the driver download section, and download the driver for the Wireless (WLAN) adapter. Then, run its installation. In this case, you will need an article and. And separate.

If you have a wireless adapter but Wi-Fi is not working:

  • Right click on it and select "Properties". Pay attention to what will be written in the "Device Status" window. There should be an inscription "The device is working properly."
  • Again, right-click on the adapter and see if it says "Enable". If there is, select it. After that everything should work.
  • Try following the steps I wrote about in the article about . Also, you can try.
  • Try reinstalling the driver (links to instructions I gave above).
  • See other solutions from this article, which I will write about below.

It all starts with the adapter in the device manager. If it is not there, then there will be no "Wireless Network" adapter in network connections. Also, in Windows 10 and Windows 8 there will be no buttons and sections of Wi-Fi settings.

Turn on Wi-Fi on a laptop

In most cases, all solutions to this problem come down to simply turning on the Wi-Fi module. Since it can simply be disabled. There are several ways to turn on a wireless connection. By activating the wireless module with a keyboard shortcut, or with a separate switch on the laptop case, or check and enable Wi-Fi in the Windows settings. Now we will consider all this in detail.

If the wireless network on your laptop is disabled, then most likely the connection icon will be like this (depending on how and where the module is disabled):

In Windows 7, the icon will look a little different, but the meaning is the same.

And first of all, I would probably advise you to try turning on Wi-Fi programmatically. in the operating system settings.

How to do it in Windows 7

In Windows 7, as well as in the "eight" and "ten", you can do this in network connections. Go to "Network and Sharing Center". From there, go to "Change adapter settings". Do not pay attention that the screenshots were taken in Windows 10. In all cases, the steps will be the same.

In the new window, you need to right-click on the adapter "Wireless Network Connection", or "Wireless Network", and select "Enable".

After that, look at the connection icon (on the notification bar). If a yellow star appears next to it, it means that the laptop sees available networks and you can connect to them.

If you do not see a wireless adapter in the Network Connections window, then most likely the required driver is not installed. It needs to be installed. You can check this in Device Manager. I wrote about it above.

If Wi-Fi is not working on a Windows 10 laptop

A few specific tips for Windows 10: If the Wireless Network adapter is enabled (see screenshot above), and the laptop still does not see available networks, then perhaps Wi-Fi is disabled by the button, or in the parameters. Let's check. Just click on the icon on the notification bar, and on the "Wi-Fi" button (if she is there).

Or in the settings. In the "Network and Internet" section.

Well, if you have there are no these buttons and tabs in the settings, then see the first section of this article, or a separate instruction: .

On Windows 8

First of all, check if the adapter is enabled in the "Network Connections" window (shown above).

Open Options. In the "Change computer settings" section, you need to select the "Wireless" tab. Then turn on the wireless network.

We look at the icon with the connection status. The laptop may have already seen available networks.

Turn on the wireless network with the buttons on the laptop

If the methods described above did not turn on the wireless network, then it may be possible to do it in hardware. Everything is very simple here. On almost every laptop, to enable and disable the Wi-Fi module, a keyboard shortcut is allocated, or a separate switch on the case (rare, but it happens).

Let's just take an example. On my ASUS laptop, to turn on Wi-Fi you need to press the keyboard shortcut Fn+F2. Look like this:

This will always be the Fn key + a key from the F1 - F12 row. Here are the combinations for other laptops:

Dell: Fn + F2, gigabyte: Fn + F2, HP: Fn + F12, Fujitsu: Fn + F5, Acer: Fn + F3

In some cases, this may be a special switch on the laptop case, which looks something like this:

Important point: function keys may not work properly (or not work at all) due to the fact that the appropriate driver is not installed, which is responsible for the operation of these keys.

Here's an example: in Windows 7, I have installed all the drivers from the official ASUS website, and the Fn + F2 key combination really controls wireless networks. And in Windows 10, I did not install the driver. And when you press Fn + F2, the flight mode is turned on and off.

Not even the driver, but the utility is responsible for the operation of the frequency function keys. You can download the utilities in the same section as the drivers. Download strictly for your laptop model and installed Windows. For ASUS laptops, the utility is called "ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities".

I hope Wi-Fi on your laptop is still working, and you were able to connect to the required network. And now we will consider the problems that you may encounter during the connection process.

Resolving Wi-Fi connection problems

There are some of the most popular mistakes, which I will discuss below. We will not consider solutions to each problem, since I have already written about them in separate articles. I'll just give links.

If the laptop does not see the home Wi-Fi network

Provided that he sees neighboring networks, and other devices see your home Wi-Fi network. In this case, I advise you to first restart your laptop and Wi-Fi router. Then, you can try in the settings of your router. Set a static channel, but no higher than 10th. You can also change the name of your wireless network in the router settings.

If you have any other problem during the connection process, then write about it in the comments. I'll try to suggest something.

If everything is connected, but the Internet does not work

Another nuisance that can be encountered after the laptop successfully connects to the wireless network. Most likely, there will be a yellow exclamation mark next to the connection icon.

Well, accordingly, the connection status is "Limited", or "Without access to the Internet." There can be many reasons, as well as solutions. I have written two separate articles on this issue. The first one is for Windows 7, the second one is for Windows 10:

  • And a separate article about the problem

In addition, there may be a case when there is no exclamation mark next to the icon, but the sites in the browser still do not open exactly. DNS error. I also wrote about the solution to this problem in the article. At the same time, the Internet in some programs can work. For example, in Skype.

Try running troubleshooting.

Most often, the following error messages appear in the diagnostic results:

These errors are relevant for all versions of Windows.

Afterword

The very situation when Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop is very ambiguous. Within the framework of one article, it is very difficult to collect all the information on such a popular problem. And when the article is very large, it is difficult to understand it. I tried to put everything on the shelves and consider all the most popular cases. I hope you found a solution to your problem.

If nothing worked, you can describe your case in the comments. I'll try to help with advice. Well, share your solutions and useful information! Good luck!

We have prepared detailed instructions for those users who do not have Wi-Fi on the router. We will also consider questions such as why the Internet does not work through a router, and what to do if the router does not work. Below is a list of solutions to the most common home router problems.

Make sure Wi-Fi is on

If you are using a laptop, make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. Most laptops have a function key to enable/disable Wi-Fi on the computer. For example, on an Asus laptop, this is the F2 key.

Make sure the wireless connection is enabled

If you have turned on Wi-Fi on your computer, but the Internet is still not working, then you should check the wireless connection. To do this, click "Start" and start typing the following text on the keyboard "View Network Connections". Then you will see the corresponding section, go to it.

The Network Connections window will display the wireless connection on the laptop. Right-click on the wireless connection and select "Enable". If you see "Disable", then the network connection is already enabled.

Make sure the SSID and security key are correct

If your computer or laptop shows multiple available wireless networks, make sure you are connecting to the correct SSID (name of your router) and that you have entered the correct security key (password). If you connect to a neighbor's router and enter the wrong security key, of course, the Internet will not work.

Make sure the Internet is working

If you're connecting to the correct router and the Wi-Fi still doesn't work, make sure the internet is working at all. It is possible that the problem is not with your computer, but that the Internet simply does not work.

Try connecting to the router through another device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. If the Wi-Fi works on another device, then it is safe to assume that the problem is with the computer.

Restart your router

If the router is not working and is not sharing Wi-Fi, the first thing you should do is to reboot it. Quite often, popular routers have errors that prevent one or more devices from connecting to the network.

You need to disconnect the power from your router, wait 10-15 seconds, then reconnect the power. Wait a few minutes for the router to reconnect to the Internet, then check the Wi-Fi on your device. If the problem is still present, try restarting your computer.

Turn off firewalls

If you have several firewalls installed on your computer, this may be the reason why the Internet does not work through the router.

To make sure that the firewall is not causing problems with your Wi-Fi connection, we suggest that you temporarily disable the firewall. If the Wi-Fi works, then you should permanently disable the firewall or even remove it.

Restore Windows to an earlier copy

If at one point your Wi-Fi stopped working on your router, try restoring Windows to an earlier copy. In some cases, bad software or incorrect settings can cause problems with your Wi-Fi adapter or problems accessing the Internet.

Reinstall your wireless device and drivers

Corrupted drivers or other problems with the wireless device may be the reason why the Wi-Fi router does not work. Make sure you don't have driver issues by following the steps below.

  1. Open Windows Device Manager (right click on Start and select Device Manager).
  2. In Device Manager, expand the Network adapters section to view all network devices.
  3. Highlight your Wi-Fi or wireless network adapter and press the Delete key on your keyboard to remove the device.
  4. Once the device is removed, close all windows and restart your computer.

After the computer boots up, the Windows operating system will automatically install the necessary drivers for the network card.

Move the router to another location

It is possible that the Internet through the router does not work for you, because the computer does not receive sufficient signal strength. Make sure the router is located close to the computer and its antennas are pointed at your device.

If the location of the router is the problem, then you should consider purchasing a Wi-Fi extender (also called an extender or extender). Install it between the router and the problem area to increase the Wi-Fi coverage area and eliminate interference.

Update your router firmware

If you've tried all the methods above and nothing helps, then you can try updating your router's firmware to fix the problem. Search the Internet for instructions on how to reflash your particular router model.

Operating system malfunction

Still not working Wi-Fi on the router? Another reason may be corrupted files in the operating system. We suggest a complete reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

Faulty hardware

If you have tried all of the above suggestions, and Wi-Fi still does not work on the router, the router itself is probably broken, or the Wi-Fi adapter on the computer. In any case, you should check the wireless connection on your computer with another router, or connect your smartphone or tablet to your router to find out for sure what the problem is.

If the problem is in the computer (laptop), then you need to take it to a service center to replace the motherboard or network card.

If the router is defective, you will probably have to buy a new one, because routers are almost unrepairable.

That's all! We examined the most common reasons why the router does not work, as well as what to do to make Wi-Fi and wireless Internet appear.

Hello, friends! If you don’t know what to do if the router does not distribute wifi, or the Internet often breaks through wi-fi, then you have come to the right place. It is difficult to answer unequivocally why this is happening, because there are many reasons and it will not work to give a specific “recipe” for all malfunctions.

Let's try to analyze the main reasons in more detail.

  • There is Internet, but the device connected via wi-fi does not open sites
  • WiFi drops out frequently
  • Connectivity Issues
  • Internet via wi-fi does not work

Let's start with the basics, a wi-fi network works on a specific channel. When we set the settings in the router, we set this parameter to “Auto”. This value sets the device to automatically search for the appropriate channel to use. This is where problems sometimes lie, so let's try to change the parameters.

Where to change channel settings?

To change the parameters, you need to go to the settings of your router, you can read how to do this. Now I will show you the example of my Asus router. Everyone has different routers, but the principle, the menu names where you need to make changes, are more or less the same.

We go to the "Wireless Network" in someone in English, it will be "Wireless". We need a "Channel" or "Channel". We hover over it and there will be a drop-down menu, you will most likely have "Auto" set. Now from this list, try to change channels one by one, save the changes, reboot the router and try for performance.

Often create configuration problems with DNS servers. These settings are registered manually or set automatically. Sometimes the settings crash or the unstable operation of the servers affects. Try to set the settings as in the image.

When you first set up a Tp-Link router, there is such a problem: everything is done correctly, but your device does not distribute the Internet or Wi-Fi.

Let's try to deal with the most common situations:

  1. We turned on the router, but the Wi-Fi network does not appear and is not displayed on devices connected to the router.
  2. There is a Wi-Fi network, but it is impossible to access the Internet. In this case, the network on the computer is displayed as "No Internet access", or "Restricted".

These problems occur periodically on any device, but if your router is not Tp-Link, read article.

Wi-Fi network may not work for various reasons. However, most often they are associated with hardware problems. Therefore, use multiple devices to test the connection. If the Internet does not work, usually during setup, errors were made when entering the parameters for connecting to the provider.

Consider the case when there is no Wi-Fi connection. Let's say you recently purchased a router and are setting it up for the first time, you left the standard name for the Wi-Fi network (for example, "TP-LINK_9415E8"). As a result, it will be difficult to find your network among others. To get rid of this problem, go to the router settings and enter a new network name. How to do this correctly is explained in the instructions for setting up the router,.

Then find the button on the router case, with which you turn on the Wi-Fi network. As shown in the figure, for Tp-Link routers, this button is usually located here, when pressed, it is recessed into the case.

To find out if a Wi-Fi connection is established, check the Tp-Link settings of your device.

When the wireless network is not available, we connect to the router via cable, then go to the settings. Enter the address in the browser or 192.168.1.1 and go to the right page. There we specify the username - admin and the password to enter the network - admin. If something does not work, carefully study the step-by-step and.

In setup mode, go to the "Wireless Mode" tab ( Wireless), and check if there is a checkmark next to Enable Wireless Broadcasting ( Enable Wireless Router Radio), which is responsible for turning on Wi-Fi. If not available, check it to connect the wireless network.

In addition, you need to check how well the removable antennas are attached to the router, and also what the Wi-Fi indicator shows.

Why is the Internet not working through Tp-Link?

A situation often arises: the router was configured successfully, all the equipment is connected through it to Wi-Fi, and for some reason the Internet does not work. When the router is connected via a network cable, but there is no Internet access, to fix this problem, you must:

  • check and correct information for the Internet provider in the settings;
  • check if the cable is connected correctly to the WAN connector of the router.

Usually on the computer in the settings it is found connection status "No internet access" or "Limited" (for Windows 8 and Windows 10). You can read how to fix this problem here. On TVs, various mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), you will not be able to run programs that use Internet access, enter any site.

What problems may arise when connecting to the Internet during the first setup of the router, you can read in the article: when setting up the router, it says “No Internet access”, or “Limited” and there is no Internet connection.

What should I do if I cannot access the Internet?

If you have one of the Tp-Link routers, you need to check:

  • correct connection of the provider's network cable to the router;
  • correct settings for your connection type.
  1. Connect a network cable to the blue connector of the router (it was made by the wizard when connecting to the Internet) or a cable from an ADSL modem. The figure shows how to properly connect the cable to the WAN connector.

When you connect a network cable to the router, you can usually access the Internet. If this does not happen, there may be problems with the equipment of the provider, or you need to pay for the use of the Internet.

  1. If you connected the equipment correctly, but it is impossible to access the Internet, we will check if you made a mistake when setting up the equipment. Let's go into the setup mode, go to the "Network - WAN" tab ( Network-WAN), in it we will select the type of connection corresponding to your Internet connection. Then fill in all the fields in the window that opens.

You can get information about your connection type from your ISP. In addition, if necessary, he should give you a login, password, IP address. For some connection types, this is not required. Detailed information about this can be found here .

We have considered all the reasons why Tp-Link routers will not distribute a Wi-Fi network. We hope that you successfully coped with all the problems, and now the router is working correctly. If you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments to the article.

If Wi-Fi does not work on your phone, then this article will help you quickly solve this problem and use the wireless network again. Often, many smartphone owners are poorly versed in the settings of their devices and do not know what causes problems with Wi-Fi. However, malfunctions can be hidden not only in a mobile device, but also in an Internet access point - a Wi-Fi router. We will consider both cases in the framework of this instruction.

Why Wi-Fi does not work on the phone: possible reasons

All problems can be divided into two groups according to their origin:

  1. incorrect ones that interfere with the transfer of data from the access point;
  2. incorrect settings on the Wi-Fi router, due to which the mobile device cannot connect to the wireless network.

Let's consider all cases in more detail.

The Internet does not work on the phone via Wi-Fi due to a malfunction of the device itself in the following situations:

  1. Failure of the wireless network adapter in the smartphone;
  2. Incorrect settings in the device menu.

In the first situation, you need to take your smartphone to a repair shop so that the specialists restore the adapter to working capacity (often it comes out of its connector when it is shaken or dropped) or replaced with a new one. If Wi-Fi stopped working after repair, then all the blame lies entirely with the service center.

In the second situation, you can try to set up a Wi-Fi connection yourself. To do this, go to the settings menu.
Depending on the manufacturer and operating system, you should select the "Wireless Network" section.
Next, click turn on Wi-Fi
and select your home router from the list of found access points.

If the smartphone does not see the Wi-Fi router at home, but connects to other modems, then the problem is in your router.
If this did not help and the Internet still does not work on the phone via Wi-Fi, then you can try to make a Hard reset or simply restart the mobile device.

In order to make a Hard reset, dial the command *2767*3855#. Attention! In this case, all data from the internal memory of the phone (contacts, photos, videos, programs, settings) will be deleted. Therefore, do not forget to backup or copy them to your computer.

We figured out why the smartphone does not see the Wi-Fi network. But what if the phone connects to the router, but the Internet still does not go?

Let's try to solve this problem.

Why is Wi-Fi not working on my phone after connecting?

If your device is properly connected to the wireless network, then it does not want to access the Internet through a mobile browser, then you need to reconfigure the router. Carefully review the list of blocked devices in the modem settings - perhaps your mobile device got there.
