Theresa Mary May[ex. 1] (Eng. Theresa Mary May, nee Brasier; born October 1, 1956, Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK) is a British politician, acting (since July 13, 2016) the 76th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Leader of the Conservative Party since July 11, 2016. She served as Minister of Women and Equality (2010-2012) and Minister of the Interior (2010-2016). Member of the House of Commons (1997-present). The second woman in history (after Margaret Thatcher) to head the British government.

Political career[edit | edit wiki text]
From 1986-1994 she was a member of the local council of the London Borough of Merton. Ran in the 1992 parliamentary elections in the constituency of North West Durham and in the early elections of 1994 in the constituency of Barking, but unsuccessfully.

In the 1997 elections, she was first elected to the House of Commons of the British Parliament from the newly formed constituency of Maidenhead in Berkshire and has since been re-elected.

From 1997-2002, she held various minor positions in the Conservative shadow government. In 2002, she became the first female chairman of the Conservative Party and, unlike the leader of the party, dealt with the technical issues of ensuring the functioning of the Conservatives.

In 2003-2005 she was the shadow minister of transport and, at the same time, the shadow minister of food and the environment. From May to December 2005 she was the shadow minister of culture, media and sports. On December 6, 2005, she was appointed shadow leader of the House of Commons. In 2009-2010, she served as the shadow minister of labor and pensions.

After the 2010 elections, she was appointed Minister of the Interior, while receiving the portfolio of Minister for Women and Equality. In this position, she campaigned for equal rights for same-sex couples, becoming one of the first high-profile politicians in the UK to publicly express her support for legalizing same-sex marriage. The post of secretary of labor and pensions, which she could count on because of her last position in the shadow government, was given to Ian Duncan Smith.

In the House of Commons, May voted for an invasion of Iraq, against climate change laws, against further integration of the UK into the European Union, against a ban on smoking in public places, against allowing gay couples to adopt children.

Election of the leader of the Conservative Party[edit | edit wiki text]
During the 2016 campaign leading up to the Brexit referendum, she supported Prime Minister David Cameron and opposed Brexit. But after the referendum, which was won by Eurosceptics and the announcement of Prime Minister David Cameron about his upcoming resignation, she put forward her candidacy for the post of head of the Conservative Party and, therefore, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

On July 5, 2016, in the first round of elections by Conservative MPs for the leader of the Conservative Party, Theresa May immediately became the favorite of the race - gaining 165 votes. And on July 7, two women became the finalists in the race for the post of leader of the British Conservatives and the prime minister of the country - Theresa May, who enlisted the support of 199 parliamentarians, and Deputy Minister of Energy Andrea Leadsom, who scored 84 votes, after which Teresa was considered the most likely contender for the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Theresa May, Prime Minister of England, was born on October 1, 1956 in Eastbourne. She began to be called the new iron lady, who replaced Margaret Thatcher. She began to pursue a tough and cold-blooded policy, thanks to which she built a successful career and achieved tremendous success. In her native country, she began to be treated with great respect. Theresa May in her youth strove for knowledge and tried her best to improve herself.

Theresa May's age is difficult to determine by her appearance. A woman can hardly be given as many years as she actually turned out. She looks just great, constantly looks after herself and does physical exercises. The future politician was born in the family of a clergyman in Sussex. This is where she spent her youth. Parents sent the girl to study in two schools at once: regular and parochial. As a result, both were graduated with honors, and Teresa went to conquer Oxford, where she chose the Faculty of Geography and in 1977 became a bachelor. The talented student greedily absorbed knowledge, read literature and even wrote her own popular science articles.

The young girl began her career as a consultant in a bank. Parents were not able to provide material assistance to their daughter, so she had to get her own bread. She did not have influential or wealthy relatives who could help her get a decent education or make a brilliant career, she had to achieve everything gradually herself. Only 10 years later, Teresa began to rapidly climb the corporate ladder. She did not stop reading, improving her knowledge and skills, reinforcing them with practice. The woman began to make a political career by the beginning of the 80s, and in the early 1990s she made her first attempts to break into parliament.

In her youth, Theresa May was not deprived of attention by representatives of the opposite sex. A beautiful and smart girl could not help but attract the attention of guys. She had a lot of fans, but over time they all became rejected.

Only in 1980, Teresa truly fell in love and remains faithful to her chosen one to this day. It turned out to be the current husband of the new iron lady Philip John May. True, they never had children.

About Theresa May, despite the fact that even before her sensational appointment her career was going uphill, they started talking about relatively recently. Not only the career achievements of the new prime minister, but also personal ones came under the scrutiny of the world community. The press is actively writing about the complex character and impeccable endurance of Lady May, for which one of her colleagues even called her a marble woman. And her extravagant style of dress and love for the original shoes immediately became the subject of independent discussion. However, May herself rarely allows herself to be mocked - after all, it is not for nothing that she is called the second Margaret Thatcher.

Work

year 2000

Teresa was born into a religious family, brought up in strict Puritan traditions, and it seems that from childhood she probably knew what she wanted. Specific upbringing and a brilliant education at Oxford have done their job - throughout her career in politics, May has always made decisions guided not by ideology, but by personal morality: this woman clearly understands what is good and what is bad. Iron integrity allowed Teresa to make a dizzying career in, I must say, a rather short period of time. Theresa May became interested in politics back in the late 80s. Then she took her first post - she became the head of one of the London districts. But May has always dreamed of more, namely, to be the first female prime minister. Thatcher, of course, was ahead of her (simply because she was born much earlier), but May was still disappointed - she never liked being second. Then Mei was in for a few more crushing defeats - she tried to run for high positions, but, alas, nothing good came of it. Another would have given up long ago, but not Teresa.

In 2002 Teresa became the first female leader of the Conservative Party. Actually, it was in this post that she showed her love for peremptory and direct statements. It is easy to assume that she practiced this manner of communication before, but from now on, almost every statement of Teresa became public. For example, in 2002, speaking to the delegates of the party congress, she said: "You know what people say about us - they call us an evil party." The words of the future prime minister, oddly enough, did not cause condemnation, but, on the contrary, made them respect the future Iron Lady No. 2 even more. For her sharp tongue, her comrades-in-arms in the conservative party use the epithet bloody difficult in relation to her. Well, she can really speak harshly, but Teresa has a principle that she never violates - not to use swear words in her speech.

After the 2010 election, Theresa May was appointed Secretary of the Interior (a post she held longer than any of her predecessors) and at the same time received the portfolio of Minister for Women and Equality. For the remaining 6 years before her triumph, May voted with one hand for the legalization of same-sex marriage, and with the other - for the ban on gay couples to adopt children; opposed the exit from the European Union and at the same time - against the further integration of the UK into the EU. May's ambiguity as a politician was also expressed in the fact that, being a supporter of Cameron on Brexit, she immediately put forward her candidacy for the post of head of the ruling Conservative Party, as soon as it became known that Cameron was resigning. “Brexit means Brexit,” Theresa May said at the time. Obviously, despite her personal beliefs, she could not miss her, perhaps the first and last chance to realize the dream of a lifetime. Let, and as the second female prime minister in the history of Great Britain.

Personal life

Theresa May with husband Philip

Colleagues of the prime minister say that it is absolutely impossible to make friends with Teresa. She is a typical introvert, hard to get along with people and hates public speaking, preferring to do it only when absolutely necessary (perhaps the whole point is that she is simply bad at speeches, read: How to fail public speaking: a visual aid from Teresa May"). The former head of the UKIP party, Nigel Farage, said May was "made of marble." However, her relatives do not agree with this definition and note that if you manage to win her trust, you will get a truly loyal friend who will never weave intrigues behind your back. One of those who managed to win over the impregnable Teresa was her husband, Philip May, whom the woman now calls her most faithful friend and stone wall.

Theresa May is a happy wife. They met their husband Philip back in 1976, at the Oxford Union discussion club, from which many political leaders of the country came out. There is a legend that the future Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, introduced the couple at a dance party of the Conservative Party. Three years later, in 1980, the lovers got married, and since then they have been living in perfect harmony for thirty-six years. True, Teresa and Philip have no children. To all questions, the new Prime Minister of Great Britain evasively answers that every family has its own difficulties, but this does not mean at all that life cannot go on.

There is another problem in the May family - a few years ago, doctors diagnosed Teresa with an unpleasant diagnosis: diabetes mellitus. The disease forces her to constantly be under the supervision of doctors, as well as to inject insulin twice a day. However, according to Teresa, she has already got used to this annoying trouble, and the disease has not affected her work for a long time.

For her beloved husband, Teresa is not at all a politician who has reached the peak of her career. At home, the unbending Mei becomes an affectionate wife and, moreover, a real queen of the kitchen. Yes, the new prime minister loves to cook. As she admitted in one of the interviews that Mei now gives regularly, she has about a hundred cookbooks at home. And in her free time from politics and cooking, Teresa prefers to go to the mountains, throwing a backpack over her shoulders, preferably to ABBA songs and Mozart music.

Style

Theresa May's style is already legendary. Some call her taste impeccable, others close their eyes in horror. One way or another, the inimitable and highly original style of the new prime minister undoubtedly deserves attention. Especially her love for shoes. In autumn, the new British prime minister turned 61, but age did not in the least affect the beauty of her slender legs, which Teresa emphasizes in every possible way with unusual shoes. There are no forbidden models for her: leopard pumps, snakeskin over the knee boots, shoes with large rhinestones and prints, even multi-colored rubber boots.

The reason for new conversations was the audience appointed by Teresa with Elizabeth II, where May appeared in an elegant black and yellow suit and those same leopard pumps. However, the queen took it calmly, probably because Teresa had previously appeared in her apartment in patent leather over the knee boots.

What today

Mrs. May has been holding her enviable post for a year and a half, and during this time she has managed to become as frequent a guest on the pages of the world press as Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron or Angela Merkel. No wonder: the new prime minister inherited not only the ambiguous legacy of Cameron's rule, but also the new global political situation - first of all, the election of a freak Trump as US president, French leader Macron's undisguised ambitions to gain leadership in the EU, and, of course, the suddenly revealed "Russian trace in the Brexit referendum.

How does Teresa deal with these challenges? Well, the British themselves are not too impressed with the success of their new leader. London has already vacated its main streets several times for anti-May protesters, who do not stop scolding the prime minister for tightening tax collections, for abolishing tax breaks for a third child (which looks a little strange, given that at the moment the third baby is waiting for the national pride of the British - the duchess Cambridge), for job cuts and other internal decisions of her cabinet. The dissatisfaction of the population logically resulted in the fact that for her second term, Mrs. Mei was re-elected, to put it mildly, with a creak - she had to make a deal with a third-party party. Moreover, negotiations with the Democratic Unionist Party also did not go too smoothly: they say that Teresa even had to lie to Her Majesty that she had everything ready to receive her cherished mandate.

However, it seems that all these difficulties in her post are only a test of time. In the end, even the legendary Thatcher at one time had to face powerful protests from both ordinary Britons and her fellow party members. Well, one can only hope that Teresa will not, following her example, regain her popularity with military actions in distant overseas British territories.

Second after Thatcher

Britain suddenly has a new prime minister. Or rather, not so. The fact that the country will have a new head of government and that it will be a woman has been known for a long time. But it was expected that the result of the battle between the two fair sex for the post of prime minister would be summed up only in September. However, it turned out differently.

The name of the political heiress Margaret Thatcher can already be called. This is a long-term minister of the interior of the country and a very experienced politician Theresa May.

I am a big fan of British political thrillers. But what has been happening in the political circles of London over the past few weeks has made me once again come to the conclusion that reality can be much more striking and even "fabulous" than the flight of fancy of the most talented workers of the pen. It all started with a political earthquake: unexpectedly for the local political class, the UK voted in a referendum to leave the European Union.

Confident in a different outcome of the referendum, Prime Minister David Cameron, of course, immediately announced his resignation - only fragments remained of his political reputation. Everyone expected that the new prime minister would be the ex-mayor of London, Boris Johnson, a politician with fantastic charisma and one of the main agitators for the country's exit from the EU. But Johnson was betrayed by his closest associate, Attorney General Michael Gove, who said many times that he was not fit to be prime minister. Gove made an unexpected act: he announced that Johnson, due to defects in his character, could not be the head of government, and he, Gove, although he still did not want power, was ready to "sacrifice himself" for the sake of the country.

Struck by the betrayal of a friend, Johnson abandoned the fight for the premiership. However, this did not help the Minister of Justice: public opinion branded him as a "traitor". The intrigue did not end there: a new favorite appeared in the premier race, a politician whom most of the British public had never heard of until that moment - Deputy Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom.

This lady had no serious political experience and was caught lying several times about her service record. But she had very serious chances to become prime minister. Andrea Leadsom is a very talented speaker, she originally advocated for the UK to leave the EU. In the eyes of the party activists of the ruling Conservative Party, this favorably distinguished her from the candidate of the party elite Theresa May. The interior minister opposed the country's exit from the European Union. And since it was the rank and file members of the party that had to make the final decision on the new leader of the Conservatives, Andrea Leadsom was literally one step away from premiership.

And then everything changed again. In her first big newspaper interview with the influential media outlet The Times, Andrea Leadsom made a grandiose mistake: she made it clear that Theresa May's childlessness made her an unacceptable candidate for prime minister. A storm of indignation arose, and Andrea Leadsom left the race for the post of head of government. Only one participant remained in it - Interior Minister Theresa May.

What is known about this future political heiress Margaret Thatcher? She will be 60 this fall. She has headed the Interior Ministry since May 2010, which is a grandiose achievement by modern British standards. Before May came to this position, the very prestigious post of Minister of the Interior was considered "enchanted" in Britain for a number of years. Five predecessors of Theresa May came to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as promising politicians, and left as disgraced and discredited figures.

But nothing “stuck” to Theresa May in a dangerous position: she headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs longer than anyone else, starting in 1892. Theresa May has a reputation as a very serious and very tough politician, not inclined to play in public. Some people even call it frankly boring. But most experts agree: there has been plenty of "fun" in British politics anyway.

The country is in a very difficult position. The UK must leave the European Union. But under what conditions this will be done, no one knows. Before Britain looms the prospect of an economic crisis, declining living standards and even collapse. Scotland, whose majority voted against leaving the EU, is now considering a second independence referendum. Under such conditions, it is better to have a boring, but experienced and skillful politician at the head of the country. Theresa May fits that description perfectly.

Theresa May, 59, will officially become the new British Prime Minister on July 13. She is the second woman in the country's history after Margaret Thatcher to hold this high post. May graduated from Oxford and worked in banking and government as a young woman. In politics - since the mid-90s. In 2010, she became Minister of the Interior and Minister for Women's Rights and Equality. the site tells what you need to know about the new heroine of modern politics.

Theresa May

Women's victory

Whether Theresa May won this election, women would still win. The second candidate for the main post of the country was 53-year-old Andrea Ledsom, deputy minister of economy. But Theresa May immediately became the leader of the race and on July 11, her opponent ended the campaign, turning May into the only contender for the post. May supported the policies of David Cameron and was against Brexit. Now she is the leader of the Conservative Party and on July 13 Cameron will transfer his powers to her.

new and former prime minister: Theresa May and David Cameron

Theresa May is often compared to Angela Merkel. One of the similarities in the lives of these women is very unusual - they were both born in the families of theologians. And if Father Merkel studied theology and for some time was a pastor of the Lutheran church, then Pope May was a Protestant priest and served as a curate at Whitley Church near Oxford. Theresa May herself is also an obedient parishioner and attends church every Sunday. At the same time, she supports gender equality and is a supporter of same-sex marriage.

Theresa May got married in 1980. Their marriage to Philip John May turns 36 this September. The prime minister's husband is an investment banker and is now an employee of the American trust company Capital Group Companies. This couple has no children. Theresa May does not hide the fact that the reason for childlessness is her health and is very sorry that she could not know the joy of motherhood.

Health

In addition to the fact that Theresa May cannot have children, she learned about another problem four years ago. In 2012, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Therefore, she constantly needs to take insulin and be under medical supervision.

Theresa May

Theresa May's relationship with fashion is not the easiest. Although in Britain it is believed that she loves to dress beautifully and fashionably, the politician has several rather large blunders on her account, which the whole world remembers. Mei is especially partial to bright and even eccentric shoes. So, at a party conference, she somehow appeared in leopard-colored boats, which caused heated discussions among colleagues and in the press. And later appeared at a reception at Queen Elizabeth II in a strange way, including high patent leather over the knee boots.

But still, at serious party congresses, Theresa May prefers strict black or gray suits, and for cocktail and informal events she chooses jackets with geometric prints, sometimes bright red dresses. The editors of the site propose to consider the most vivid images of a woman who will be responsible for British politics in the next few years.
