How to enable safe mode win 10.

In today's article, we'll look at how to enter Windows 10 Safe Mode if the laptop / computer is working properly or the operating system does not start for any reason. The fact is that the usual way of calling a window with a choice of the option to start the operating system has become irrelevant. It was replaced by several methods that allow you to turn on your PC in safe mode.

Windows 10 Safe Mode, called Safe Mode, is a diagnostic operating system boot mode designed to find and solve many problems in the operating system in order to return it to a healthy state. This mode is used in cases where the computer refuses to start normally, from the last known good configuration, or it is impossible to perform any action due to the use of target files and drivers of Windows 10 itself.

When the PC boots in Safe Mode, only the components necessary for the launch and operation of the operating system, such as drivers, system services, explorer, and the OS kernel, are placed in RAM. Application software and drivers for peripherals that are not required to run the computer are not loaded.

Safe mode is useful for removing viruses, fixing errors with drivers that arose due to their imperfections or incomplete compatibility, eliminating the cause of blue screens and freezes, uninstalling programs, restoring the system, activating the administrator account, etc.

A familiar option from the "seven" to boot the computer into safe mode is to use the utility to configure the system.

1. We launch the command interpreter, represented by a dialog box called "Run", which is launched using "Win + R".

2. Enter the "msconfig" system command, which launches a utility for configuring the launch of Windows 10.

By the way, the command can be run through the Windows 10 search bar.

3. In the window that appears, activate the second tab "Download" and select the operating system that should be launched in diagnostic mode.

4. Check the box located below the form with a list of OS option "Safe Mode".

  • "Minimal" - classic safe mode with a minimum of system components and Windows Explorer;
  • "Other shell" - the new name of the configuration, which was called "With command line support";
  • "Network" - with the launch of network drivers in order to use a network connection.

6. Click "Apply" to confirm your intentions and click "OK" to close the window.

7. Using the Start menu or another convenient option to turn off the computer, restart it.

8. After we launch the system configuration window, and on the "Download" tab, remove the previously checked box in order to return the computer to normal mode.

Special launch options

Another method that allows you to start Windows 10 in safe mode if it starts. As in the previous version, all actions consist in performing simple operations.

1. Open the "Options" window using the search bar, the "Win + R" combination or the button in the "Start".

2. Click on the name of the "Update, security" section, where we go to the "Recovery" subsection.

3. We find the item "Special options ..." and click on the button "Restart now".

4. After the hardware self-test, a screen of additional options for starting the computer will appear, where we select the "Diagnostics" option.

5. Then click on "Additional options", "Download options" and click "Restart".

6. In the launch options menu, select the desired computer startup mode using the F4 - F6 keys.

In order to launch "Special options" in the case when the "ten" is not loaded, but the lock screen is displayed, while holding down the "Shift" button, select the "Restart" option after clicking on the computer shutdown button.

Use the boot device to invoke safe mode

Don't know how to enable safe mode on Windows 10 when it won't start at all? Read the current section to the end.

The only thing you need to run the "dozens" in diagnostic mode is a bootable media with the operating system installation files. An OS recovery disk is also suitable, but a limited number of users have it.

1. We start from a bootable USB flash drive using the Boot Menu of your BIOS.

2. Hold down the "Shift + F10" keys to launch the command line or click on "System Restore" in the window with the "Install" button, where we call "Diagnostics", go to additional parameters, call the command line.

3. Using the command line, execute the command: “bcdedit / set (default) safeboot minimal” to start the classic debugging mode, and then replacing “minimal” with “network”, boot into diagnostic mode with the launch of network drivers.

4. Close the command line window, reboot.

5. After solving the problems, we reboot the OS, launch the command line, as before, and enter and execute: "bcdedit / deletevalue (default) safeboot" to turn off safe mode.

Last Method

This method will display a window where you can select one of the advanced safe mode options. Moreover, it is applicable to any operating system installed on the PC.

  • We call the command line by booting from the installation flash drive.
  • We enter a long command: "bcdedit / set (globalsettings) advancedoptions true".
  • After the notification of its successful completion, we reboot by closing the command line.

After restarting the computer, a window will appear with a list of advanced OS boot options.

Next, to deactivate this way of turning on the computer, you need to run: bcdedit /deletevalue (globalsettings) advancedoptions. The command is entered into the command line called with administrator privileges.

We return the menu called by the key "F8"

If you want to know how to enter Windows 10 Safe Mode using the classic F8 key, read the lines below.

The return of the call to the window with a list of methods for starting the computer is carried out by editing the configuration file for starting the "dozens".

1. Run the command line with administrator account privileges.

2. Run "bcdedit / deletevalue (current) bootmenupolicy".

3. After the text "Operation completed" appears, restart the computer.

4. After self-testing the hardware shell, press "F8" until we see a familiar window with an extended list of options for launching "dozens".

To cancel the call to the extended list of options for turning on the PC, use the "bcdedit / set (current) bootmenupolicy standard" command.

Choose the option that suits you and fix errors in the functioning of Windows 10 without resorting to reinstalling it.

Windows 10 inherited all the features of the boot system from Windows 8, providing the same graphical environment for performing system recovery tasks. It is anticipated that system failure recovery operations will be predominantly performed by the automatic recovery system. In the event that Windows 10 does not boot correctly, the automatic recovery system starts, which, without user intervention, tries to find and fix problems that prevent the system from loading normally. However, this does not mean that Windows 10 does not have a safe mode (Safe mode), just that this boot mode is hidden from users by default.

In some cases, it is necessary to start the system in safe mode, for example, to debug or, a driver, or an application. Let's see how to enable safe mode in Windows 10.

Windows 10 can be booted into safe mode in several different ways.

MSConfig Utility (System Configuration)

The easiest way to boot Windows 10 in safe mode, like in previous versions of Windows, is to use the utility msconfig.exe. For this:

Advice. You also need to disable booting in safe mode using msconfig by unchecking the Safe boot item.

Shift + Restart combination

In the start menu, press the Power button and, holding Shift on your keyboard, select Reboot System ( Restart)

Note. The same Shift+Restart combination can be used on the login screen.

In the dialog that appears, select the items Troubleshoot(Diagnosis) -> advanced options(Advanced options)-> Startup Settings(boot options).

Reboot the computer by clicking the button Restart.

After the reboot, a window will appear with the available options for booting the system (9 options, including three types of safe mode). To boot into Safe Mode, press F4 or 4 (or F5/F6 to boot into Safe Mode with Networking or Command Prompt, respectively).

Launching diagnostic mode from the interface of the new Control Panel

To launch the new modern Windows 10 Control Panel, click the button start and select menu Settings. Then go to section Update &security.

Go to section Recovery and in section advanced startup click Restart now.

Starting safe mode from the command line

It is also possible to configure Windows 10 to start in safe mode and from the command line. To do this, open a command prompt (cmd) with administrator rights and run the command:

Then restart your computer with the command:

Now Windows 10 will always boot in safe mode. To return to normal boot mode:

bcdedit /deletevalue (default) safeboot

Returning the old text boot menu

In Windows 10/8 it is possible to revert to the old Windows text loader that supports the key F8(Shift + F8) and the ability to select system startup options.

Note. The boot speed of the system with such a bootloader will be lower.

To return the test loader, run from a command prompt with administrator rights:

bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy legacy

Now, when booting the computer after the self-test stage (POST), you need to press the key several times F8. The good old text menu with system boot options should appear.

To disable the bootloader's text mode and return to fastboot, run:
bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy standard

Launching Safe Mode from Recovery Mode

Few people know that in order to enable safe mode and other recovery options in Windows 10, it is enough 3 times in a row interrupt the system boot with the power off button.

The system recovery environment will start for 4 times ( recovery mode), from which you can choose to boot in safe mode or other options for booting the system.

Select an item See advanced repair options and follow the instructions from the second paragraph of our article.

In safe mode (Safe Mode), the OS loads the minimum set of system files, drivers, services necessary to start and operate the system. This type of download is used to diagnose a computer (laptop) and troubleshoot various problems.

The Safe Mode tool comes in three variations:

  1. Standard - start the system with a minimum set of Windows elements.
  2. Loading network components - in addition to the standard option, network drivers and services are loaded that are necessary to access the Internet and other computers on the network.
  3. With Cmd - instead of a graphical shell, the command line will be launched.

If you are not an IT professional, do not use option 3, but select mode 1 or 2, depending on the problem. In the material, we will study how to enter Windows 10 Safe Mode in several ways on a computer (Asus, Acer, Lenovo, HP laptop).

Entering Safe Mode through the system configuration window

Type msconfig, then click OK (Enter). This will open the system configuration window.

Click OK. As a result, a warning will pop up about restarting the system, click "Reboot". After restarting, you will be in safe mode.

Important! After working in this mode, go back to the system configuration and uncheck the "Safe Mode" option. Click OK, restart your PC.

Launching Safe Mode through Special Boot Options

In this method, we will consider 4 situations in which special boot options open, and safe mode is activated from them. Situations 3 and 4 are used when Windows 10 cannot start.

1. Shift + reload combination. In the Start menu, press the power button. Hold down the Shift button and hold it down. Then click on "Reboot".

Note: Shift reboot can also be done from the login screen.

2. Special boot options in Windows settings. Press + I to open options. Navigate to Update & Security.

Select "Recovery" on the left. In the special boot options area, click on "Restart Now".

3. Start from the media that restores the system. Boot through the Boot Menu USB drive created using the "Create Recovery Drive" tool. Next, select the Russian keyboard layout.

4. Interruption of the download process. When Windows 10 fails to start several times in a row, automatic recovery mode is turned on. If this does not happen, then this mode can be called manually. During OS startup, when the Windows logo is displayed, hold down the power button until the PC (laptop) turns off. Next, turn on the computer and repeat the shutdown procedure again. Do this 2-3 times. When everything works out, you will be transferred to the automatic recovery preparation screen with subsequent diagnostics. Wait until the screen for choosing automatic recovery options appears, where select "Advanced Options".

All the 4 situations above will lead to the opening of special boot options. To enter Windows 10 Safe Mode, follow these steps.

Go to the troubleshooting section.

In diagnostics, open advanced options.

In the advanced options, you will need to select "Download Options".

In the download options, click on "Restart".

Wait for the restart to happen. Before you will be 9 launch modes. We are interested in numbers from 4 to 6. Depending on the option to start safe mode, press the F4, F5, F6 buttons.

Enabling safe mode using the command line

On behalf of the admin in a way convenient for you. When it is not possible to start the system correctly, boot from the USB installation media (disk) with Windows 10.

Select the Russian language by clicking "Next". Click the System Restore link.

Move sequentially to the troubleshooting (diagnostics) section, advanced options. On the advanced options screen, select Command Prompt.

In Cmd, type bcdedit by pressing Enter. Pay attention to the "Windows loading" block, remembering the identifier. It is usually named (current), but when running Cmd from an installation USB drive, the identifier is named (default). Be careful.

How to start Windows 10 Safe Mode via Cmd? Use the desired command with your ID. After writing the command, press Enter.

  1. Standard Safe Mode:
  1. With network drivers:

bcdedit /set (ID value) safeboot network

  1. With Cmd support. First, enter the first command, then the second command. Do not forget to click Enter after writing each command.

bcdedit /set (ID value) safeboot minimal

bcdedit /set (Identifier value) safebootalternateshell yes

  1. To start the OS in normal mode, use.

bcdedit /deletevalue (Identifier value) safeboot

If you are in Safe Mode with Cmd support, then after entering the command above, use another additional command.

bcdedit /deletevalue (Identifier value) safebootalternateshell

For example, to boot into the standard safe mode, having the identifier (current) the command looks like this.

Restart your computer (laptop). If using Cmd from an installation USB drive, close the command prompt. From the action selection menu, select "Continue" to reboot later and start Safe Mode.

Enabling calling additional boot options with the F8 key

Called from a special section of additional boot options, called by pressing the F8 button before starting the system. You will not be able to enable safe mode on Windows 10 from the F8 menu, due to its disabling and fast system startup (UEFI BIOS + SSD). It is possible to disable fast startup in the UEFI BIOS and enable the F8 call menu. If you have a classic BIOS, skip the BIOS steps below (steps 1-3). Take these steps.

bcdedit /set (ID value) bootmenupolicy Legacy

Where instead of "identifier" you enter your value, which you learned in step 6.

  1. Click Enter.

For example, the command in our case will look like in the screenshot below.

Now, before loading Windows 10, quickly press F8. Next, we get to the menu, where we select the desired Safe Mode option with the arrows.

Now you know how to enter safe mode in Windows 10 in different ways. You can also use this troubleshooting tool for various situations, whether it's starting from the OS itself or turning it on from a bootable Windows 10 flash drive when the system cannot boot.

You can launch the System Configuration utility using the built-in search in the taskbar. Just enter a request and click on the very top row in the search results. In the window that appears, go to the "Download" tab and check the "Minimal" item. Confirm your choice by clicking on the "OK" button. You will see a dialog box asking if you want to restart your computer right now. After your consent, the Windows 10 operating system will boot into safe mode.

Method 2. Command line

Experienced users should remember that you can boot the system in safe mode by holding the F8 key when starting the computer. However, in Windows 10 this feature has been disabled to speed up system startup. To fix this "improvement", you need to enter only one command at the command line.

  1. Right-click Start on the taskbar and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu that appears.
  2. Enter the following command in a command prompt window: bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy legacy
  3. Press Enter. Close the terminal window and restart your computer. Now when you press the F8 key during system startup, the boot method selection dialog should reappear.

If in the future you want to return everything as it was, then this can be done using the following command:

bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy standard

Method 3: Custom Boot Options

This method does not require any tricks from you and seems to lie on the surface. However, how many can boast that in the wilds of Windows 10 settings they independently discovered this useful feature? Therefore, I decided to include this download method in the article too.

So, open the "Start" menu, click on the "Settings" link, and then follow the address: "Update and security" → "Recovery" → "Special boot options". Click the "Restart Now" button. This will take you to the Select Action screen. It offers three options, of which we are interested in the "Diagnostics" item.

On the next screen, click the "Advanced Options" button, and then "Boot Options". At the end of this long path, we are waiting for the desired option called "Enable safe mode." By the way, you can significantly shorten this journey if you simply hold down the Shift button while clicking on the Shut Down command in the Start menu.

If you're having problems with your Windows computer, one of the first troubleshooting steps is to boot up and start in Windows Safe Mode. Safe Mode is a simple, stripped-down version of the operating system, loading only the most important files and drivers. In safe mode, you can fix a number of errors with drivers, cure your computer of viruses that prevent the system from starting stably. If earlier it was possible to enter the familiar Windows 7 using the F8 button when starting the computer, then Windows 10, 8 no longer has this function, but there is a trick that will help return the F8 button to enter safe mode when you turn on the computer with Windows 10 In this guide, we will analyze how to enter and start safe mode in Windows 10 from the desktop and return the familiar F8 button to enter through it all the time, and consider how to disable safe mode to avoid cyclic loading.

Note: The easy ways are at the bottom, assuming you can boot into your desktop.

How to Start Safe Mode on Windows 10 Boot

If the Windows 10 system does not boot to the start screen and you need to enter or start safe mode when you turn on Windows 10 through the "BIOS", as, for example, before in Windows 7, using the F8 key, then you will need to or get into the Windows 10 recovery environment by other methods, which are described below. It can be created on another working computer or when yours was still working.

Note: If you can boot to the desktop, then launch the command prompt as an administrator and proceed to step 3.

Step 1. When you start from the installation flash drive, then go to the point installations and click on the link below System Restore".

Step 2. You will be transferred to the advanced settings of windows 10. Next, go through the settings Troubleshooting > Advanced options >Command line.

Step 3. Enter the following code into the command line (you can copy it in its entirety, you can set each command with Enter):

c:

bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy legacy

exit

Step 4 . Now you can start in safe mode with the key F8 in Windows 10, press the button F8 continuously at system boot until the menu appears with ways to download. If you want to return back as it was, then enter instead of legacy> standard. There will be the following command bcdedit /set (default) bootmenupolicy standard .

  1. Press the restart button on the computer itself many times in a row to provoke an error and bring up the process diagnostic menu.
  2. Turn on the computer, wait until it boots up to the maximum error. Next, press and hold the power button on your computer to turn it off completely. Repeat the procedure 3 times, for 4 times you should have a recovery menu.
  3. If it doesn't work for you, then follow Step 1.

How to add Safe Mode to the OS boot selection menu

Windows 10 now has advanced startup options. It will look the same as if you have multiple OS versions installed on your computer. If you often use safe mode, then setting the menu when choosing an OS will be very excellent and convenient. In the picture below, I configured some settings for myself. Let's take a look at this method.

Note: Before executing this method, read it from beginning to end, and you will understand the meaning.

Step 1. There will be three commands for the three menus created. Maybe you don’t need three, but you only need one menu with a safe mode. Run Command Prompt as administrator and enter the following commands of your choice.

  1. bcdedit /copy (current) /d "Safe Mode"- Create a safe mode boot.
  2. bcdedit /copy (current) /d "PSU with network"- Create a safe mode boot with network (Internet access).
  3. bcdedit /copy (current) /d "BP CMD"- Create a safe mode boot with command line.

Step 3. You will open the system configuration, go to the tab "". We will see the list that was set via the command line above. Let's customize each menu.

1) . Select "safe mode" from the list at the top and click on the checkmark at the bottom and select" Minimum". Next, check the "" box and click apply. You can also set a menu timer, for example, after 10 seconds it will automatically load just windows 10. Thus, the boot menu will appear in safe mode.

2) . Select from the list "PSU with network" and from the bottom select "Network" and check the box " Make these boot options permanent". Click apply and in this way we can load safe mode with a network, i.e. with the ability to access the Internet.

3) . Highlight "BP CMD", below select " Another shell"and check the box" Make these boot options persistent." Click Apply and OK.

How to enter safe mode in Windows 10

Step 2. You will be taken to the windows 10 recovery environment. In this environment, you can reset settings, restore the system, and more. In the recovery environment, click on Troubleshooting.

Click the button Reload.

Click on the keyboard F4 to start the process of starting windows 10 in safe mode.

How to enter safe mode in Windows 7

Method 1. Windows 7 starts on button click F8. As soon as you turn on or restart your computer, press the F8 button at 1 second intervals. The method is also suitable for Windows XP. After calling up the advanced settings menu, select the boot option.
