FOREWORD
The proposed phrase book is intended for those who make a tourist or business trip to the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, and is also, to some extent, the key to acquaintance. The phrasebook will also be useful for those who begin to study the Karachay-Balkarian language on their own. It includes the most common words and expressions that can be used in various situations.

It takes into account the features, customs, traditions of the Karachai and Balkar peoples, based on politeness, respect for older people, while giving the most comforting forms of sentences. By swapping individual words included in a section, you can create short dialogues. They are grouped into thematic sections, which will greatly facilitate the use of the phrase book.

The most frequently used communication formulas are given in the phrase book mainly in the form of typical expressions and phrases.

When using a phrase book, it should be borne in mind that Russian and Karachay-Balkarian phrases do not always represent a literal translation, since, firstly, a literal translation is quite rare, and secondly, the author tried to convey a situational correspondence.

About the Karachay-Balkar language
The Karachay-Balkarian language is the language of two peoples: the Karachays and the Balkars, which for a number of reasons belongs to the Cuman subgroup of the Kypchak group of Turkic languages, which also includes the Crimean Tatar, Kumyk and Karaite languages.

The Karachay-Balkarian language is an early written language. It has two dialects - choking-joking (Karachaev and Baksano-Chegem dialects) and clatter-choking (Malkar and Kholamo-Bezengievsky dialects).

The literary language developed on the basis of the Karachay-Baksano-Chegem dialect.

There are about 40 thousand words in the Karachay-Balkar language.

The sound system of any language consists of a certain number of phonemes. There are 33 phonemes in the Karachay-Balkarian literary language: 8 vowels, 25 consonants.

The alphabet of the Karachay-Balkarian language consists of 37 letters and letter combinations: 10 letters for vowels, 25 consonants and 2 characters - ъ, ь, which do not have a sound value.

Although the phonetics of the Karachay-Balkar language differs significantly from the phonetics of the Russian language, many sounds of the Karachay-Balkar and Russian languages are pronounced the same. Some sounds are graphically depicted in both languages in the same way, but are pronounced differently. This applies to both vowels and consonants.

1. Vowel sounds of the Karachay-Balkar language: a, e (e), o, e (ö), y, u (ü ), s, and.

Vowel sounds are divided into back rows (ah, s, oh, y) and anterior rows ( e (e), i, e, u (ü)).

2. Consonants: b, c, d, g, e, g, h, d, k, k, l, m, n, ng, p, r, s, t, ý, f, x, c, h, w, sch.

In the Karachay-Balkarian language, consonants do not fall into hard and soft ones (in the vicinity of back vowels they are pronounced hard, and in the vicinity of front vowels - softly). Thus, it makes sense to contrast non-consonant sounds in terms of hardness and softness, not a separate sound, but at least a syllable, namely a root syllable, depending on which the whole word becomes hard or soft, and the main role is played not by consonants, but by vowels.

al(take it, take it) - email(village)

sorry(mane) - yellow(wind)

bol(be) - white(Delhi)

from(the fire) - et(go), etc.

In these examples, under the influence of back vowels, the consonants have a hard pronunciation, and under the influence of front vowels, they acquire a soft pronunciation. Therefore, in purely Karachay-Balkarian words, the softness of consonants depends only on the (front) vowel, and to soften consonants in the Karachay-Balkarian language b not used:

kel(come) - kel kyun(day) - kun

yellow(wind) - jelly june(wool) - June.

As for the letters e, yo, yu, i, in a position after vowels, then, just as in Russian, they are not a graphic sign for any special phonemes. They are denoted, as in Russian, by the combination th followed by vowels:

d + e = e, d + o = e, th + y \u003d u, th + a \u003d i.

I in words ayak(leg), ya(nest) denotes a combination th + a, e in words tyue(camel), ie(master) - th + e.Yo - yu denoting yo and yo, are used in words from the Russian language: tree, revolution, Yura.

In the Karachay-Balkar language, in most cases, only sounds of one order, that is, back or front vowels, are combined in one word.

Therefore, the sounds of the last syllable always affect the subsequent vowels of a given word. In all root and derivative words, if the vowel of the last syllable of the root is hard ( a, s, o, u ), then the vowels of this word must also be pronounced firmly, for example: saban + chy + la + ry + byz + ny + dy(a thing of our grain growers); if the vowels of the first syllable are soft ( and, e (e), yo, yu ), then the vowels of all other syllables of this word will be pronounced softly, for example: temir + chi + le + ri + biz + ni + di(a thing of our blacksmiths).

So, the vast majority of words in the Karachay-Balkarian language are hard or soft, and word-forming affixes 1 obey the same laws.

Features of the pronunciation of vowel sounds of the Karachay-Balkar language are outlined below.
