Russia started talking about Anton Belyaev thanks to the “Voice-2” project, in which he unsurpassedly performed a cover of the song “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaac, accompanying himself on the piano. However, his music career started long before the show. He is the founder, composer and vocalist of the famous music group Therr Maitz. The pleasant velvety timbre of his voice leaves few people indifferent.

Biography of Anton Belyaev

Anton was born on September 18, 1979 in ordinary family, not related to art. They lived then in Magadan. Mom taught computer science, dad worked in a computer center. Anton has an older sister, Lilia.

The boy showed his talent for music from early childhood. His parents did not interfere with this, and when Anton was 5, they sent him to study at music school in piano class. The boy dreamed of playing the drums, but children under 9 were not accepted there. Having easily mastered playing the piano and grand piano, Anton took part in many children's music competitions and repeatedly became a prize-winner in them.

As a teenager, Anton, like all boys, made his parents nervous. For excessively violent behavior at the age of 15, he was expelled from the gymnasium with in-depth study of the English language. After finishing 9th grade at school, he entered School of Music, but was expelled from there too.

The situation was saved by the fact that Evgeny Chernonog invited the guy to his jazz studio. When Anton was 16, he was already a member of a jazz orchestra and recorded several compositions performed on two pianos together with Evgeniy Chernonog. This helped the guy direct his energy in a “peaceful” direction and not let his life derail.

At the age of 18, Belyaev began his studies at the Khabarovsk State Institute of Cinematography at the department pop music. He studied well and earned an increased scholarship. And at night Anton played in nightclubs. He completed his studies at the university in 2002.

In 2004, Belyaev formed the group Therr Maitz. The guys played in the Rus club, owned by Anton Vadimovich Belyaev himself. In 2005, we managed to conclude an agreement and go on tour to clubs in the largest cities in Japan. However, since 2006, team members have dispersed under different work contracts. Anton went to Moscow, where he worked in a recording studio as an arranger and producer. He has collaborated with many celebrities. However, it was just work; musician Anton Belyaev did not give up the dream of returning to his own creativity.

In May 2010 Therr Maitz got back together. Belyaev played keyboards, sang and wrote music for the group. Its composition changed several times, it was finally formed in 2011, and now it includes 6 people: Anton Belyaev, Victoria Zhuk, Boris Ionov, Ilya Lukashev, Artem Tildikov, Nikolai Sarabyanov. The main genre of music is indie.

The group has participated in many music festivals and concerts:

  • Estate Jazz;
  • Republic of KaZantip;
  • Red Rocks;
  • Maxidrom;
  • Bosco Fresh;
  • Gipsy parking.

The first album of the renewed group was released in May 2014, and a year later - the second, and in 2016 - the third.

In 2013, the whole country started talking about Belyaev thanks to his successful performance in the First Channel project “The Voice”. He participated in the second season of the TV show under the “patronage” of Leonid Agutin. Thanks to this project, both Anton and Therr Maitz became more popular than ever before.

We are not superstitious! Celebrities who weren't afraid to show the faces of their newborn children

Top secret! 21 facts you didn't know about Russian stars

Newly made parents Mot and Maria Melnikova, happy father Dmitry Malikov and other guests of the GQ private cocktail Anton Belyaev, 38 years old, participant of the 2nd season Anton Belyaev came to the casting of “The Voice” with a specific goal - to declare himself and his project Therr Maitz, which already at that time had its own audience. Anton connected his life with music... How did the lives of the most prominent participants in the show “The Voice” turn out?

Personal life of Anton Belyaev

Anton met Julia, who later became his wife, in a cafe. He did not win her heart right away. I also had to write Mary Magdalene's aria from famous opera sing, and right on the table. And pick up the numbers herself in the phone number, which she deliberately wrote down incorrectly. And yet, Anton achieved his goal and in 2012 the couple got married. Yulia worked as a correspondent for “Evening Moscow”, a presenter and journalist for several well-known TV channels. She later became editor of Europa Plus TV and manager of Therr Maitz. The talisman that often accompanies Anton is a toy donkey, this is his gift to his wife.

Besides music, Anton has other hobbies. He loves cycling and watching Hollywood movie premieres.

Childhood and family of Anton Belyaev

On September 18, 1979, in Magadan, the future singer and musician Anton Belyaev was born into the family of a computer science teacher and an electronics engineer at a computer center. The family already had a daughter, Lilia, who joyfully greeted the news of her newborn brother. Anton showed interest in music back in early childhood drumming lids and pots in the kitchen.

Anton’s mother Alfina Sergeevna contributed in every possible way to her son’s passion for music and never interfered with his musical interests in the groups Parkway and Depeche Mode. When Anton was 5 years old, his mother enrolled her son in local music school No. 1.

Little Anton really wanted to play the drums, but percussion instruments accepted only from 9 years old. Therefore, the boy began to learn the basics of playing the piano and soon mastered the instrument so well that he became a regular participant and winner of numerous competitions and festivals for young pianists. It should be noted that Anton was often sick as a child, but this did not stop him from receiving music prizes and awards.

Adolescence was marked by traditional boyish activities and interests, so for some time music faded into the background. During this time of teenage tossing and maximalism, Anton is expelled from the 9th grade of an English gymnasium for bad behavior. After finishing 9th grade high school No. 29 Belyaev enters a music school, from which he is soon expelled for his excessive passion for jazz and bad behavior. Who knows what the fate of the restless teenager would have been if, at the age of 13, he had not met Evgeniy Chernonog. Evgeniy invited the boy to take classes at his jazz studio. A year later, Anton was already playing jazz compositions with famous musicians in Magadan. At the age of sixteen, the young man was already playing in the youth jazz orchestra, and at a Magadan studio he performed famous jazz standards on two pianos with Evgeniy Chernonog and recorded them.

In 1997, Anton graduated from gymnasium No. 30, after which he entered the pop and jazz department of the State Institute of Arts and Culture in Khabarovsk, where he even managed to receive an increased scholarship. As a student, Anton successfully combined his studies and performances in nightclubs. In 2002, Anton completed his studies at Khabarovsk University and entered into an independent life.

Works of Anton Belyaev

In 2004, Anton Belyaev became the art director of the Rus establishment. He collects creative group, which consists of Evgeny Kozhin (drums), Maxim Bondarenko (bass), Konstantin Drobitko (trumpet), Dmitry Pavlov (guitar). Later Anton Belyaev became the front man of this musical group, later named "Therr Maitz".

In 2006, Anton went to Moscow, trying to realize his creative ambitions. For some time Anton Belyaev works as an arranger and collaborates with famous performers Russian stage- Tamara Gverdtsiteli, Polina Gagarina, Nikolai Baskov, Maxim Pokrovsky and Yolka. In one of his interviews, the musician admits that he did this work solely for the sake of money, since he “cannot stand” some of the performers with whom he had to collaborate. Anton notes that true love he feels only for quality music.

Through the efforts of Belyaev, in 2011, the jazz band “Therr Maitz”, with an updated lineup, successfully resumed its concert activities. Anton Belyaev became the composer, keyboard player and vocalist of the updated group, creative team which consisted of vocalist Victoria Zhuk, guitarists Nikolai Sarabyanov and Artem Tildikov, drummer Boris Ionov. Anton Belyaev is known both as a resident of the Jazz Parking project and as a musician working in different directions from trip-hop to electronica.

Anton Belyaev on the show “The Voice”

In the fall of 2013, Anton Belyaev successfully performed on the famous music show of Channel One “The Voice”. As part of the third day of auditions, he performed the song “Wicked Game,” accompanying himself. He so charmed the four mentors with his performance that they all turned to him. As a result, Anton became a participant in the TV show “The Voice Season 2”, joining Leonid Agutin’s team.

Anton Belyaev’s love for quality music helped him become famous overnight. On October 5, 2013, the whole country learned about Anton Belyaev.

Personal life of Anton Belyaev

One evening Anton was returning from his friend’s wedding and stopped at a cafe on the way. There he met his future wife Yulia, intrigued by the fact that she could sing Magdalene’s aria from the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” while standing on the table. Yulia gave her phone number, but the numbers turned out to be incorrect, and Anton had to figure them out for three whole days. Belyaev's persistence led to success. He managed to get through to the girl and invite her to his concert.

Since then, Yulia and Anton have been together. In 2012 they got married. Yulia Belyaeva is a journalist, she began her career in the newspaper “Evening Moscow”, worked as a TV presenter and correspondent on many leading TV channels. Anton Belyaev's wife is the director of TherrMaitz and editor of the Europa Plus TV channel. Anton Belyaev likes to ride his bike on the embankment opposite Gorky Park, not far from his home. The musician loves to watch Hollywood movies. As he himself admits, he often burdens himself with understanding the structure of the world.

Therr Maitz frontman Anton Belyaev, who became famous throughout the country for the program “The Voice,” makes no secret of his life - he talks in detail on social networks about himself, family and tours, and sometimes directly communicates with subscribers in the comments. Three months ago, Anton and his wife Yulia became happy parents - the couple had their first child, Semyon (who already even has his own Instagram). However, there were several moments in the musician’s biography that have long haunted us. And according to established tradition, we have not come up with more the right way dispel all questions once and for all by asking our hero’s wife, Yulia Belyaeva, about everything.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton as a child drum kits used pots, lids and other kitchen utensils?

Yulia Belyaeva: I saw this in his childhood photographs. Whether he was acting for the truth or whether it was filmed as a joke, I don’t know. In general, it’s even funny - if you see his numerous childhood photographs, where he plays small fake drums or children’s pianos, and then you go to his studio and look at how he sits and how the musical equipment is arranged, then you will see that nothing has changed.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton was a pugnacious and difficult teenager as a child?

Yu.B.: Of course, his mother knows better about this ( laughs). But in general, yes, I heard that he was pugnacious, but that all went away when his teenage years ended. He never fought in front of me ( laughs).

ELLE: Is it true that Anton made his first money in Moscow by writing songs for some wives? wealthy people?

Yu.B.: Yes, that happened. I caught the time when he was working at home - we had just started living together. And sometimes I heard him making some soundtracks and didn’t understand what was happening - everything was so different from his own style. These were Russian-language songs, some karaoke tracks and anthems. I also know that he wrote music for Tamara Gverdtsiteli and did several projects for Nikolai Baskov.

ELLE: Is it true that the name Therr Maitz was invented after a long drinking session and is not translated from any language and means nothing?

Yu.B.: I myself was not present at this, but everything was like that. It was already almost morning, the party was at that stage when no one understood anything and everyone around them was insane. Anton was supposed to perform somewhere with his musicians the next day, and the regulations required a name for the group, but there was none. The brainstorm began. At some point, the guys saw ants crawling across the sticky table, covered in cola and martini. And all this took place on high floor high-rise buildings in the center of Khabarovsk - where do they get them from? “The ants came to the party” - everyone was so amused that they began to build on it - ants, termites - and, in general, thus the name Therr Maitz was born (pronounced “Ter mates” - NoteELLE). It was in 2004, thirteen years ago. An interesting fact came to light when we arrived in Yerevan for concerts. Our Armenian friends told us that in their language it sounds like “ter mets” - this translates as “father Almighty” or “great master”.

ELLE: Is it true that you insisted that Anton go to Golos?

Yu.B.: Yes, I was among those people who insisted on this. But besides me, Anton was also influenced by the editors of “Voice” and other employees of Channel One involved in this project. They are constantly watching new groups at different venues, and by that time they had long noticed Anton during his Moscow performances, and convinced him of this.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton passed the casting in the first season, but refused to participate because he was scared?

Yu.B.: No, that's not the point. At that time, four labels offered Anton contracts. Everyone ruled out the possibility of participating in “The Voice.” main reason was in it. But before the second season he was hesitant, yes. I remember our conversation with him - we were in the fitness center, lying in the jacuzzi. At that time, there was a lot of talk among musicians about this project. Anton categorically did not want to participate in it, since he felt like an alternative musician. “Where am I and where is Channel One! - he said. “How can I go there with my electronic music? I understood his doubts - after all, this audience is mainly women over fifty, mainly from the provinces, who love talk shows. We talked for a long time, I reasoned like this: “You are a musician, you love to create and play music. All you need is a stage, a piano and a microphone. All. The viewers of Channel One may not like you, but you won’t lose anything from it.” And then Vika Zhuk (vocalist Therr Maitz - ELLE’s note) called, who was going to this casting herself the next day, and said, “Well, Anton, shall we go?” - That’s when he finally gave up.

ELLE: Is it true that the decisive reason to participate in the project was the need to pay rent?

Yu.B.: Not really. We had money to pay the rent, but this is partly true. Until recently, we lived in a two-room apartment on Leninsky. She was cool, and the house was located directly opposite Neskuchny Garden. But let’s say this: before “The Voice” and after “The Voice” financial situation has changed, to be honest - obviously in better side, now we live in a spacious house, in a very green place.

ELLE: Is it true that you and Anton met by chance when he walked into a cafe after a friend’s wedding.

Yu.B.: Yes it's true. Moreover, it was not just a friend, but Therr Maitz sound engineer Ilya Lukashev. It was 2010, in “Yaposh” on Dmitrovka (now in its place there is a snack bar “Voronezh” - ELLE note). Anton and the company were finishing up the wedding, and my friends and I stopped there on the way to Simachev.

ELLE: Is it true that he then performed for you Magdalena’s aria from the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”?
Yu.B.: This blatant lie! Write it down! (laughs) Actually, the truth is that he promised to sing it to me seven years ago, but he never did. I love this musical and this particular aria. We need to remind him!

ELLE: Is it true that Anton proposed to you simply by handing you a toothbrush?

Yu.B.: No, it wasn't like that. He actually gave me a toothbrush, but that was a year before the proposal. I asked him about this myself, because we were leaving the party in the morning, and I understood that I would stay with him. I remember that when I voiced this request to him, his eyes sparkled with happiness. And the proposal happened a year and a couple of months after we met, on my birthday. During the concert, Anton stopped the performance, called me onto the stage, and when I got up, I intuitively understood what would happen next. I didn’t know what awaited me in the evening, but all that day in the morning my heart was pounding wildly and I was shaking wildly. I couldn’t even draw the arrows straight and thought about staying at home. When Anton proposed to me on stage, I was amazed that my heart felt it all. I will never forget that moment - my girls laughed and cried with happiness with me, drummer Boris shouted “Goodbye, Anton!”, the whole audience applauded us. Everything was like in a movie!

ELLE: Is it true that back side yours and Anton wedding rings engraved Don"t Panic?

Yu.B.: Yes it's true. This is our credo with Anton. The roots of this phrase go back to the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and our favorite movie based on it.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton loves everything Japanese?

Yu.B.: Yes, he loves Japan and Japanese things. Perhaps this is due to the fact that he spent his childhood on Far East, and even then I was able to appreciate the quality of Japanese goods. He shared memories of how one of his friends was brought clothes or gifts from there, and it was very cool. He likes Japanese clothes, jewelry, we have Japanese shampoos in our bathtub, we buy Japanese diapers for our two-month-old son Semyon. Therr Maitz's newest album, Tokyo Roof, was recorded in Tokyo on the roof of one of the high-rise buildings. In general, yes, Anton loves everything Japanese.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton has good eyesight, but he wears glasses as an accessory?

Yu.B.: Yes, glasses are an accessory for him. When we met him, he had not yet come to this image, although he wore them from time to time. For example, six months before we met, he went to record a project in Kazakhstan. So there, judging by the photographs, he was wearing glasses. He started wearing them all the time after filming the Doctor video. By the way, his glasses are also Japanese.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton has aerophobia?

Yu.B.: He had it before - aerophobia, supplemented by oceanophobia. I remember once we were flying to Brazil, and he squeezed my hand really, really tightly. Especially during takeoff and landing. But now he has already gotten rid of all this - since he has to fly a lot. So these phobias have exhausted themselves.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton doesn’t spend much time on Instagram, and the 13 accounts he follows are all members of Therr Maitz?

Yu.B.: Look. In his account @therrmaitz he follows 13 people - all the band members and family. He doesn't subscribe to anyone else. However, he spends a lot of time on social networks. He often comes to our groups and official accounts to interact with fans. And, for example, the road home after the concert looks like this: we get into the car, and he starts looking at what the audience who was at the concert wrote, monitoring the audience’s reviews. He reads everything carefully. Maybe like something, chat with someone personally. Our fans really appreciate this.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton’s fee is from two million rubles?

Yu.B.: This is not an entirely true statement. Two million is, let’s say, the upper limit when it comes to a commissioned concert. Usually, we are talking about smaller amounts.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton constantly swears?

Yu.B.: Yes it's true. I'm even worried about what our son's first word will be like. When we met, I couldn’t stand it when people used foul language in front of me - I either demanded that it stop, or excluded such people from my social circle. However, Anton's case is special. I remember when he called me and invited me on a date, he was already swearing on the phone. But he does it somehow... skillfully or something. Funny, funny and intelligent. Sometimes this relieves tension or awkwardness. This is not mindless, unconscious swearing. This is a specific mat that is cool!

ELLE: Is it true that Anton forbade you to do anything with your face? Do plastic surgery and injections?

Yu.B.: This is true. When we met, for many years I walked exclusively in stiletto heels, exclusively with winged eyes and dyed hair. The day after Anton bought me a toothbrush, we went to the pool together. There he saw me without makeup and said: “Lord, you are so beautiful without makeup!” and forbade me to wear makeup and wear heels, saying that I looked like a schoolgirl. And for me then it was tantamount to walking naked. But I was very captivated by the fact that I can be unkempt, unmade up, but they still appreciate me and perceive my natural beauty. Once I had a minor manipulation done by a cosmetologist, after which I got a bruise. Anton then told me “God forbid you do something to yourself!”, and after that we did not return to this topic.

ELLE: Is it true that you sent Anton’s photo to Sony Pictures for the casting of the role of the new Agent 007 and they became interested in him?

Yu.B.: Yes it's true. I remember the moment when they answered me: Anton and I were flying to Barcelona for the Primavera festival, we were already sitting on the plane. I went to my mail and saw that I had received a letter with an offer to go through the casting tomorrow. And an address in New York. My first thought was to immediately get off the plane and buy a ticket to New York. But Anton refused then. Sometimes I think I should have made him get off the plane. But he says that he is not an actor, but a musician. Meaning that if you are going to do something, then be the best at what you do. That was the end of it.

ELLE: Is it true that Plush the Donkey was originally yours?

Yu.B.: Yes, Anton bought it for me at the same time as the toothbrush. We wandered around the ABC of Taste for a long time, and he bought it unnoticed, handing it over right in front of the entrance to his house, saying, “Keep your freak.” It was so cute on the one hand that, among bunnies, bears and other toys, he bought this most unsympathetic donkey, on the other hand it was a shame that he called him a freak. Despite the so-called ugliness, I began to zealously love this toy. ( Laughs) And now it belongs to Semyon.

ELLE: Is it true that Anton's favorite designer is Rick Owens?

Yu.B.: Yes, it makes up a significant part of his wardrobe. And mine too, by the way.

He became known to the general public a year ago after participating in the show “The Voice”. Today Anton and his band Therr Maitz are in great demand. How is this atypical for Russian show business the band managed to bring their music to a mass audience and conquer it - HELLO!

The music played by Therr Maitz is far from everything that is usually called popular in our country: firstly, it is a mixture of completely different styles- from house to acid jazz, secondly, frontman Anton Belyaev does not sing in Russian. For Russian stage this is strange, unusual. And yet, Therr Maitz concerts are scheduled months in advance, fans do not give way - everything is exactly as it should be for real stars. We proposed to Belyaev to discuss this paradox when we met in one of the fashionable Moscow restaurants.

Anton, you recently started a tour in support of your new album. There are so many people in the clubs that you can hardly stand, let alone dance. Moreover, people come completely different ages. One can understand why a 20-year-old student came, but what is her mother doing there?

It's simple. One part of our fans are people who knew about Therr Maitz even before “The Voice,” and the other are those who come because they remember me from this TV project. It was broadcast in prime time on the central channel, and, of course, many people watched my performances. But our creativity is somewhat different from what people saw on the show. Therr Maitz is a band that primarily deals with electronic music. At our concerts, we play what we love ourselves, while always curtsying towards our fans from the television audience. I remember at the first concert after “The Voice” I went on stage and honestly said: “If someone is far from electronics and came because they expected me to sing Chris Isaac again, you can go to the box office, your money will be returned.” No one left en masse, which is good. (Smiles.) And then we are not fixated on one thing - we give acoustic concerts, play in philharmonic societies. We are doing such a concert in St. Petersburg, closer to the New Year - in Moscow Crocus City Hall. We are not a hipster group that has once and for all chosen one style for ourselves and will henceforth exploit it. We develop, try, search. Now, for example, I really want to work with new things. IN this moment recording a new album...

- ...which is already breaking sales records on iTunes.
- Yes, it sells very well, especially considering the fact that it doesn’t exist yet. (Laughs.)

Therr Maitz Band - When can those who pre-ordered the album expect it?

Soon, I promise. We are working on it.

There is an opinion that the Russian audience is not ready for complex music, be it jazz or electro. That's why they give him a simple pop - so that he doesn't have to bother himself with something unfamiliar. What do you think?

I will say that this is a huge misconception. Let me give you an example. Very often I hear: since many of us don’t know English, then it’s not worth singing in it - they say, they won’t listen anyway. This is not true! Great amount music on English language They listen in Russia, often without even understanding the words. This means that the point is not this, but the fact that you need to do your job efficiently, and then everything will work out. Personally, I originally wrote instrumental music. Nobody needed it - except that it played in the background in supermarkets and on call hold on the phone. And not because she was bad, but because there were no words. I wanted more. Theoretically, I could write poetry myself, I would have enough persistence and patience. But I'm not a poet. I can come up with a melody, a concept, a phrase “I"m Feeling Good Tonight, and then a professional should work - so that in the end it turns out really cool. And here it doesn’t matter at all whether the viewer has special education to understand this steepness, or not. I am convinced that he will be able to feel a quality product regardless of who he studied for. It’s like with phones that everyone knows: few buyers really appreciate the fact that they have some kind of special mechanism inside and that the glass is, say, sapphire. But everyone who has ever picked up such a phone understands: this gadget is better than any other. A person feels quality, that's all. Therr Maitz is genuinely trying to be the best - I think people feel that.

- Do you already have plans to conquer the world?

Yes, but they are careful. I think for now we need to consolidate our positions in Russia, and then we will carefully move to the West. We already have some thoughts on this matter. We are by no means talking about concerts for emigrants, but about those close to us in spirit European festivals. You can send a request: “We are cool Russian guys, invite us.” We will be invited and allowed to perform on some third stage, but we don’t want to go to a third stage, unless an exception can be made for the festival in Montreux. None of our artists have performed there yet - only instrumentalists.

- You give the impression of a very self-confident type.

And what's wrong with that? (Laughs.) I know that our music is objectively good. For example, for our song “I"m Feeling Good Tonight, I’m ready to give my finger - maximum work was done on it and I’m not ashamed of it. It’s one hundred percent done, I can perform it perfectly in any condition and on any platform - for example , in New York on Broadway. (Pauses.) In front of Barack Obama. (Pause again.) Drunk. I can.

-Are you an idealist?

- How does this relate to the fact that in your native Magadan you were constantly expelled from schools and until the age of twenty you, to put it mildly, were not distinguished by good behavior?

Well that's what I try to be good musician, does not change the fact that I was an idiot as a child. I went to a music school across the park and got bullied a couple of times by the local bullies. I still had to walk, and somehow I found it with these hooligans mutual language, began to be friends with them. And then he became the main one among them - he asserted himself as best he could. But when music became my profession and a way of survival, income, everything fell into place. I had to choose.

Let's talk about starting your career. In Khabarovsk you had your own group, then seven years ago you moved to Moscow, worked with other artists for a long time, but didn’t really promote your own group. And then they suddenly decided to start - from Channel One, in prime time. The conclusion suggests itself: Belyaev is a very cunning person. First, I trained on others (and among these “others” there are famous and respected people: Tamara Gverdtsiteli, Polina Gagarina, Yolka, Max Pokrovsky), and then, having learned all the professional secrets, I began to promote my own group. So?

Well, it’s not a matter of cunning, but of poverty. (Laughs.) It’s just that at that time there was little money for food, so I had to work. Then I was only involved in music production - I was a production producer. But, of course, I trained in some things and made acquaintances. And yet, during the seven years that I lived in Moscow and was in this environment, I did not become famous. I heard the same thing: “Dude, this is cool, but no one here will listen to your music.” Having seen the first season of “The Voice,” I suddenly realized: here it is, the very platform where you can come and get everything for free. And so it happened.

Therr Maitz performance, 2013
- Were you afraid to go to the program? After all, you were already inside show business, and your age: 33 is not 18, when in case of failure you can simply forget and go on looking for yourself.

It was terrible and terrible. The fear that you won’t be chosen, that I’ll lose my authority as a producer - all this happened. I knew that I was not Caruso, not a super singer. When I saw it on qualifying round 150 people, I realized that I didn’t belong there, and assessed my chances very modestly. But I was lucky. Perhaps many stronger opponents were overwhelmed by stress.

- Maybe the toy donkey that sat on the piano during your performance helped?

Maybe! (Laughs.) His appearance is pure impromptu. My wife and I are standing backstage before I go on stage, and I’m shaking. She says: “Do you want me to go with you?” But you can’t. Well, she gave me this donkey as a talisman, and so I went out with it. When I came to the next shoot, I felt somehow ashamed: he seemed to be a grown man, but he came out with a toy. But the assistant director is already asking: “Where is the donkey? He’s already stated in the script.” And so it happened. Fans have already begun to come to the next broadcasts and bring gifts to the donkey. They knitted a hat and sewed some things. (Laughs.)

Tell us about your wife Julia. It is known that she is a journalist, creative person: worked in a newspaper, on television. But now all her time is taken up by taking care of you and the group - she is both director and manager. Don't you think she's losing herself this way?

Seems. But her help is priceless to me; without Yulia, nothing would have happened. She is good at getting along with people. But I don’t go to parties, I don’t remember the names of the “right” people, I don’t understand all this small talk. Yulia has a different character: she knows everyone, she has acquaintances everywhere. And for two and a half years now she has been carrying all this on herself, for which I am very grateful to her. However, soon I plan to free her up a little - I’m hiring people who will help her.

Anton Belyaev and Yulia- How did you meet?

I was at our sound engineer’s wedding and went through a bit of it. And for some reason, after the wedding, my friends and I went to a restaurant. I started joking around, and then I noticed two girls at one of the tables. I met and took Yulia’s phone number. A few days later, a sober man called her. I really wanted to make an impression, I invited her to some jazz event, in general, appeared in all its glory. He sang, entertained her, and when it was all over, he bought her a toothbrush and invited her to come and watch a movie with me. Since then she has never picked up the brush.

- What do you like to do in free time?

I love being at home - lying in bed, covered in sandwiches, chips, and watching a movie. My favorite movie is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Anton Belyaev with his wife Yulia- What about the now fashionable discussions about art house and rolling your eyes at the ceiling: “Oh, how I like everything non-trivial!”?

Come on, I love fairy tales. Recently I wanted to go to see “Maleficent”, but “Transformers” was on. I also love robots, but Transformers are completely soulless. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is another matter: very simple and absolutely correct things are conveyed through humor and satire.

Russian musician, frontman of Therr Maitz and producer.

Personal life of Anton Belyaev

Anton lives opposite Gorky Park and often spends his free time on the embankment’s bike paths.

“In general, I’m not a big fan of art, I love pop music. I like Hollywood movies to distract me. I won't say that I'm smart, but I'm a thinker. I constantly burden myself with things like understanding the structure of the world and other bullshit, so I don’t need a movie that tries to explain something to me again. It’s like when I was a child in harsh Magadan, it was stupid to watch the movie “Kids” about children who get drunk, poke each other and get AIDS. Why do I need it? It’s all in the next entrance.”
